For the rarer and/or collectable sets, yes, the rest don’t sell that well especially
newer sets.

Just look up the instructions that you're wondering about and see from the
price guide how often they've sold in the past 6 months and for how much.

I just completed two orders that included instructions. So yes, they sell. Sometimes.
In this case, all of them were for relatively new sets. And smaller sets, not
big modulars. I can't figure out what this means.

I also see some problems with instructions. Nowadays, I rarely include instructions
when parting out sets. I am now selective about which instructions I will put
into inventory, usually limited to large sets or booklets that have higher value.

First off, most instructions sell for low prices, i.e. a few cents. But they
are large and heavy, and take up large amounts of storage space.

Second, one of the most frequent reasons for order cancellation requests I get
is instructions. People are not aware of how heavy these things are, and that
it is going to be very expensive to ship a few instructions worth ten cents.
So many times I've gotten excited to receive an order for a dozen or more
instructions (Yay! I am going to get rid of them!) only to very quickly get a
request to cancel the order or remove items because it doesn't make sense
to pay to ship something so heavy.

The amount of space that instructions take up, combined with the small financial
reward for most them, plus problems shipping mean I am reducing, rather than
increasing instructions.

I think I've sold 2 sets of instructions in the last year and a half or so?
I took them all out of inventory and plan on getting rid of the overwhelming
majority of them.

Oh, and I had one cancelled sale that the buyer thought they were getting a full
sealed $80 set for only $0.14. lol, they messaged me saying they were super
surprised the shipping was so low! That one gave me a good chuckle (it was
a new to Bricklink buyer and an honest mistake on their part, cancelled the sale
and helped them get what they actually wanted).

In the past year I've sold over 150 instructions. Two thirds of these came
from my private collection (I started my store by selling existing parts that
I already owned) and included things like the early modular buildings.

The other third are from sets that I've parted out.

There seems to be no rhyme nor reason as to which ones actually sell. One time
someone ordered 4x copies of instructions for a common Friends set - no idea
why!

I would say that if you have the space to store them then there's no harm
in keeping them to sell, but don't get your hopes up. With Instant Checkout
people get to see the shipping price ahead of ordering, but beware that you will
very often have to list custom dimensions as the Bricklink catalog doesn't
have these accurately for many instructions.

Haha, so many purchases on Bricklink seem so random.

Yes they do especially if you have some older ones too or tye more bigger sets.
We have 4 large file cabinet drawers filed away so its always a plus.

I have decided that I vastly prefer building from the instructions to building
from the PDF.

It’s surprising to me how hard some are to find, even for sets within the last
ten years.

Please, save them and post them for sale!

I feel like the only instructions people would by would be from a rare set, like
10123. I see the instructions sell for at least $80. You can view the instructions
online for free, but I think it’s the feeling of having something from that set.
Nowadays people will want anything from set 10123.

This isn't backed up by data though. There is demand for instructions from
common sets, but when supply is high they will be relatively cheap. I've
bought instructions in the past when my set copy got damaged, and in some cases
for sets I don't have but want to build. If it is a small set, I don't
mind using pdf instructions but if it is going to take more than 30 minutes to
build, I'd prefer to get a printed copy. Vintage instructions (and boxes)
also seem to sell quite well if in decent condition as people want to complete
their old sets.

Same here, not a fan of building myself using PDFs!

The ones I recycled were from the last 6 months while starting up my store, so
stuff still on the market that I don't think anyone would buy... LOTS of
Classic 11011 and 11016, some Dots crap that wasn't even instructions more
of just a flyer and some readily available polybag instructions. I wish I had
ones that were more than 6 mos old, If I find some I'll definitely list them!

Yes, they do. We have sold tons in the past couple of years. From all themes
and years. Everything sells eventually; well, except for the those Hidden Side
booklets...
