The source of this inventory is unknown.
Inventory date is March 4, 2006.
After the inventory was submitted the following parts were added to the catalog.

Part No: 3404ac02 Name: Turntable 4 x 4 Complete, Faceted with Indented Base
*
3404ac02 Turntable 4 x 4 Complete, Faceted with Indented Base
Parts: Turntable {Black}
added Feb 15, 2007

*
3009p01e Brick 1 x 6 with Black Car Grille Pattern (Embossed Print)
Parts: Brick, Decorated {Red}
added Jan 14, 2011

Part No: bb0072 Name: String Reel Winch 4 x 4 x 2 with Sloped Top, Metal Handle, Black Drum and Crane Arm
*
bb0072 String Reel Winch 4 x 4 x 2 with Sloped Top, Metal Handle, Black Drum and Crane Arm
Parts: String Reel / Winch {Red}
added Nov 7, 2008

Part No: bb0073 Name: String Reel Winch 4 x 4 x 2 with Sloped Top, Metal Handle, Red Drum and Crane Arm
*
bb0073 String Reel Winch 4 x 4 x 2 with Sloped Top, Metal Handle, Red Drum and Crane Arm
Parts: String Reel / Winch {Red}
added Nov 7, 2008

Part No: bb0072c01 Name: String Reel Winch 4 x 4 x 2 with Sloped Top, Metal Handle, Black Drum and Crane Arm Complete with String and Crane Hook Right
*
bb0072c01 (Inv) String Reel Winch 4 x 4 x 2 with Sloped Top, Metal Handle, Black Drum and Crane Arm Complete with String and Crane Hook Right
Parts: String Reel / Winch {Red}
was added to the catalog Apr 20, 2002 and was added to the inventory of all sets
that include bb0072 or bb0073. The black string probably caused that no one noticed
the color of the drum. So far there is no evidence at all, that these reel winches
came assembled in any other set then

Set No: 183 Name: Complete Train Set with Motor and Signal
*
183-1 (Inv) Complete Train Set with Motor and Signal
183 Parts, 1976
Sets: Train: 4.5V
Part assemblies should be included in the Regular Items section of set inventories
only when the assemblies in question come pre-assembled in the set box. One of
the exceptions is when an item is pre-assembled for the purpose of box display.
Which definately is the case here.

Part No: bb0072 Name: String Reel Winch 4 x 4 x 2 with Sloped Top, Metal Handle, Black Drum and Crane Arm
*
bb0072 String Reel Winch 4 x 4 x 2 with Sloped Top, Metal Handle, Black Drum and Crane Arm
Parts: String Reel / Winch {Red}
There’s no evidence so far that this part ever came in this set with black drum.
The change to red drum was probably made before this set was produced in 1973/1974
(based on evidence of other sets)

Part No: 3404ac01 Name: Turntable 4 x 4 Complete, Faceted
*
3404ac01 Turntable 4 x 4 Complete, Faceted
Parts: Turntable {Black}
Although Instruction and box show a 3404xxxx turntable, so far there’s no evidence
one of these variants came in this set.
There’s no evidence either for

Part No: 3009p01 Name: Brick 1 x 6 with Black Car Grille Pattern
*
3009p01 Brick 1 x 6 with Black Car Grille Pattern
Parts: Brick, Decorated {Red}

Part No: 3660old Name: Slope, Inverted 45 2 x 2 with Solid Round Bottom Tube
*
3660old Slope, Inverted 45 2 x 2 with Solid Round Bottom Tube
Parts: Slope, Inverted {Black}
My set was not sealed, but complete and with excellent parts from the correct
period (combination of Pip Side, Pat Pend Obscured and Pip Stud, without Part-id).
I have no reason to believe that any of these parts were replaced. I disassembled
the loco just for checking the production date of the motor (01.07.76), when
I noticed all parts were in as new condition.

Part No: 3660 Name: Slope, Inverted 45 2 x 2 with Flat Bottom Pin
*
3660 Slope, Inverted 45 2 x 2 with Flat Bottom Pin
Parts: Slope, Inverted {Black}
is the older variant of 3660 with ‘thick wall tubes’.

Part No: 3403c01  Name: Turntable 4 x 4 Square Base with (Same Color) Top (3403 / 3404)
*
3403c01 (Inv) Turntable 4 x 4 Square Base with (Same Color) Top (3403 / 3404)
Parts: Turntable {Black}
also found in a sealed set.

A wise man once said:

"There is a tendency to accept the parts already in the inventory to be correct,
without any evidence.
I think we need some evidence to include this part.
Until then, it should not be included."

I think you were absolutely right about that in certain cases.
This is one of them.

A wise man once said:

"There is a tendency to accept the parts already in the inventory to be correct,
without any evidence.

Until then, it should not be included."

I think you were absolutely right about that in certain cases.
This is one of them.

Diana

1) Calling somebody wise does not make his statements correct.
In this case, I find his statement not wise.

On top of that, there are many pieces in this set for which there is no proof,
i.e. no photo of a sealed copy showing they were included. If I submit an inventory
change request for them, would you accept the requests and remove them?

2) the inventory requests to remove them are indeed incorrect and no evidence
(in any shape of form) were given to be removed. However the superpower given
to admins can lead to these mistakes. Here are more examples I have in my mind

https://www.bricklink.com/messageThread.asp?ID=280125

By removing correct parts from inventory for vintage sets, you make them absolutely
impossible to be corrected one day, specially if those parts appeared in the
first-year-production or even first few months of production of the set.

3) The evidence to include

Part No: 3660 Name: Slope, Inverted 45 2 x 2 with Flat Bottom Pin
*
3660 Slope, Inverted 45 2 x 2 with Flat Bottom Pin
Parts: Slope, Inverted {Black}
is one single used set. The box of this used set misses inner cardboard and lid.
It was not bought new but you got it second hand and who knows, maybe you are
the third, forth,... owner.
There are multiple reasons I find this request insufficiently good to be accepted
as evidence.

i) if we accept the motor and parts are original, this is NOT a very early release
of the set. The following is an early release which comes with wires with blue
connectors:

https://www.bricklink.com/messageThread.asp?ID=267050

ii) Based on checking over 30 used copies of this set, I seriously doubt the
motor is original to this set.
I expect all copies from 1976 of this set come with
[3660old,11]
and

Part No: 3404ac01 Name: Turntable 4 x 4 Complete, Faceted
*
3404ac01 Turntable 4 x 4 Complete, Faceted
Parts: Turntable

Indeed,I first thought the turntable 3403c01 could have come in late productions
of this set based on the timeline of this part vs. the other but I even had a
hard time to find photos of a used copy coming with

Part No: 3403c01  Name: Turntable 4 x 4 Square Base with (Same Color) Top (3403 / 3404)
*
3403c01 (Inv) Turntable 4 x 4 Square Base with (Same Color) Top (3403 / 3404)
Parts: Turntable
and found out about 80-90% of copies come with 3403c01 and only 10-20% come with
3403c01. (I bought my mint copy later)
By removing 3403c01 from this set, you make 80-90% of copies of this set to be
coming with an incorrect part, based on an un-wise statement of this so-called
wise person!

The part

Part No: 3660old Name: Slope, Inverted 45 2 x 2 with Solid Round Bottom Tube
*
3660old Slope, Inverted 45 2 x 2 with Solid Round Bottom Tube
Parts: Slope, Inverted

was released in 1976 and no, no, no, the part

Part No: 3660 Name: Slope, Inverted 45 2 x 2 with Flat Bottom Pin
*
3660 Slope, Inverted 45 2 x 2 with Flat Bottom Pin
Parts: Slope, Inverted
was produced in 1977 for first time. There has been NO proof that 3660 in any
color was found in a set produced in 1976. (produced in 1976 and not released
in 1976)

It is possible that the motor is original but was mixed with a barrel of motors
in a warehouse and appeared in this copy that was indeed produced and packed
for sale in 1977. For example, I found out that about half used copies produced
in 1976 come with

Part No: 27c01  Name: Window 1 x 2 x 1 with Trans-Clear Glass (27 / 27glass)
*
27c01 (Inv) Window 1 x 2 x 1 with Trans-Clear Glass (27 / 27glass)
Parts: Window {White}
and the other half come with

Part No: 27  Name: Window 1 x 2 x 1
*
27 Window 1 x 2 x 1
Parts: Window {White}

but as I checked many used copies, this is very unlikely. It is very likely the
motor is not original, it could be from 182 or 107. We have even seen an MISB
copy of a 12v set whose motor was not original. See

https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1076865

* I see some double standards here. One single used copy is considered
as a proof to remove this part

Part No: 3660old Name: Slope, Inverted 45 2 x 2 with Solid Round Bottom Tube
*
3660old Slope, Inverted 45 2 x 2 with Solid Round Bottom Tube

The part that was produced only in 1976, that was the earliest variation of this
slope, and that it appears on the instructions (and that it is nearly impossible
to be ever checked because it was built under the front car and not visible in
any sealed copy)

Based on my mint copy, I could have submitted the request to add 3660 as alternate.
But guess why I didn't?

Well, because it would be considered not a reliable copy and my request would
have been rejected.
I recall that my request to add

Part No: 649p01b Name: Road Sign Triangle with Level Crossing Small, Thick Pattern
*
649p01b Road Sign Triangle with Level Crossing Small, Thick Pattern
Parts: Road Sign, Decorated
to 7834 was removed even if
i) there are two used copies coming with two of these parts both having bottom-tube.
ii) there is evidence that the surface print was restarted in 1981 and not in
1980.
iii) the instructions and box art shows this earlier variant.

The only different between the two change request submitted for 183 and 7834,
one accepted and the other not, is that one is submitted by an admin but the
other not. This is double standard, isn't it?

***
I do have more change requests to submit but my goal is to improve the inventory
and not create other mistake indirectly. If I submit something to be added as
alternate, now I see this may make a part from regular section to be removed
even if that was not my request.
So I won't submit those change requests for now.

In this case, I find his statement not wise.

https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1335822

That 'wise' man was you.
And I removed the item there was no proof of in this request.
Like I said, in certain cases this is the correct thing to do.

On top of that, there are many pieces in this set for which there is no proof,
i.e. no photo of a sealed copy showing they were included. If I submit an inventory
change request for them, would you accept the requests and remove them?

By removing correct parts from inventory for vintage sets, you make them absolutely
impossible to be corrected one day, specially if those parts appeared in the
first-year-production or even first few months of production of the set.

Since I was the one that added these to the inventory, I'm also the only
one who knows were this change request was based on. With the experience I have
now (12 years later), I know this was not based on hard evidence.

3) The evidence to include

Part No: 3660 Name: Slope, Inverted 45 2 x 2 with Flat Bottom Pin
*
3660 Slope, Inverted 45 2 x 2 with Flat Bottom Pin
Parts: Slope, Inverted {Black}
is one single used set. The box of this used set misses inner cardboard and lid.
It was not bought new but you got it second hand and who knows, maybe you are
the third, forth,... owner.
There are multiple reasons I find this request insufficiently good to be accepted
as evidence.

Like I said, all parts were in a perfect condition and all was still assembled.
No reason to believe slopes were switched. I have reason to believe I disassembled
the loco for the very first time, because of the state the parts were in. But
I'm repeating myself.
I disassembled the whole loco, just to look at the date for the motor, because
you asked me. I also asked you before to check the inverted slopes in your set,
but I got no reply.

i) if we accept the motor and parts are original, this is NOT a very early release
of the set. The following is an early release which comes with wires with blue

3660old Slope, Inverted 45 2 x 2 with Solid Round Bottom Tube

was produced in 1977 for first time. There has been NO proof that 3660 in any

*

Parts: Window {White}
and the other half come with

Part No: 27  Name: Window 1 x 2 x 1

27 Window 1 x 2 x 1
Parts: Window {White}

but as I checked many used copies, this is very unlikely. It is very likely the
motor is not original, it could be from 182 or 107. We have even seen an MISB
copy of a 12v set whose motor was not original. See

The part that was produced only in 1976, that was the earliest variation of this

to be ever checked because it was built under the front car and not visible in
any sealed copy)

Based on my mint copy, I could have submitted the request to add 3660 as alternate.
But guess why I didn't?

Because most of the time you are just checking 1 type of parts. This time it
were the windows.
https://www.bricklink.com/messageThread.asp?ID=278353
Before that the wires, etc
I never saw requests from you were you checked the whole inventory of a set.
And even when I asked you about the slopes, you didn't give me an answer.

Well, because it would be considered not a reliable copy and my request would
have been rejected.

It would not have been rejected.

So, my changes were based on a mint assembled loco of which I was the second
owner. With the remaining sticker 183 still on the original sheet. State of the
box doesn't say anything. I bought sealed boxes in a far more terrible state.

Your request below was based on road signs that were not in a sealed bag, while
other parts were. Different Road signs were shown on the box, etc.

https://www.bricklink.com/messageThread.asp?ID=317529&nID=1329199

The only difference is explained above.

***
I do have more change requests to submit but my goal is to improve the inventory
and not create other mistake indirectly. If I submit something to be added as
alternate, now I see this may make a part from regular section to be removed
even if that was not my request.
So I won't submit those change requests for now.

In this case I checked my own set and admin or not. I also have the right to
add change requests. And it turned out that your mint set had exactly the same
parts as in my changes.

All Admins are working very hard to check requests. And believe me, it's
not my hobby to reject requests. I want the same as you: improve inventories.

That 'wise' man was you.

Wrong interpretation. We should distinguish
1) a vintage set has in its inventory part XXa but having checked many used
sets and timeline, it looks the set always came with the other variant XXb. But
since my request is not supported by a set from a new set, it is not accepted.
Yet, there is no proof that the set came with XXa neither but the tendency here
is to assume the inventory is correct as it is and to reject any change request
if it is not 100% reliable.
This has happened a lot for my requests in the past few years, but the most recent
one is the yellow cones for 8865 (which was finally accepted but in anycase,
this is the type of change request I am talking about)

2) a vintage set has in its inventory part XXa but I submit a request o add XXb
as alternate with a reliable source, such as a new set. The set should come with
both parts, XXb as alternate. However, in this case, there is a tendency to remove
XXa from the inventory of that set because there is no evidence for it.
This is what happened it.

  And I removed the item there was no proof of in this request.
Like I said, in certain cases this is the correct thing to do.

Finding one new set, and one used set does not prove that 183 never came with

Part No: 3404ac01 Name: Turntable 4 x 4 Complete, Faceted
*
3404ac01 Turntable 4 x 4 Complete, Faceted
Parts: Turntable
Nothing checked about 3404ac01, not even a short discussion. They were directly
removed without any evidence.

Now, the inventory is badly wrong. Having checked many copies of this set for
the last few year, I have no doubt about this. Again, I bet over 80% of copies
of this set come with 3404ac01 so people will find a different part in the inventory
that what they have in hand.

Here are more examples I have in my mind

https://www.bricklink.com/messageThread.asp?ID=280125

https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1207368

By removing correct parts from inventory for vintage sets, you make them absolutely
impossible to be corrected one day, specially if those parts appeared in the
first-year-production or even first few months of production of the set.

Since I was the one that added these to the inventory, I'm also the only
one who knows were this change request was based on. With the experience I have
now (12 years later), I know this was not based on hard evidence.

But this does not mean the inventory was wrong.

3) The evidence to include

Part No: 3660 Name: Slope, Inverted 45 2 x 2 with Flat Bottom Pin
*
3660 Slope, Inverted 45 2 x 2 with Flat Bottom Pin
Parts: Slope, Inverted {Black}
is one single used set.

I am not sure here but based on checking many 4.5v trains from 70s, I don't
trust the motor is original. I have just checked the parts of another copy with
original parts, a production of 1976 like yours, but it came with slopes 3660old
and 3404ac01.
It is possible some 4.5v motors were mixed so you motor ended up coming with
a set whose parts were produced 10 months later than this motor.
If yours come with all its original parts, then we will find another copy with
similar parts with a motor produced about the same time than yours. That makes
is reliable.
For this set, this is not necessary. The set comes with slopes 3660old and 3404ac01
and if some used copies with these parts can be accepted, it is not hard to find
this.

  I disassembled the whole loco, just to look at the date for the motor, because
you asked me. I also asked you before to check the inverted slopes in your set,
but I got no reply.

i) if we accept the motor and parts are original, this is NOT a very early release
of the set. The following is an early release which comes with wires with blue
connectors:

https://www.bricklink.com/messageThread.asp?ID=267050

ii) Based on checking over 30 used copies of this set, I seriously doubt the
motor is original to this set.

Parts: Window {White}
and the other half come with

Part No: 27  Name: Window 1 x 2 x 1
*
27 Window 1 x 2 x 1
Parts: Window {White}

but as I checked many used copies, this is very unlikely. It is very likely the
motor is not original, it could be from 182 or 107. We have even seen an MISB
copy of a 12v set whose motor was not original. See

https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1076865

* I see some double standards here. One single used copy is considered
as a proof to remove this part

Part No: 3660old Name: Slope, Inverted 45 2 x 2 with Solid Round Bottom Tube
*
3660old Slope, Inverted 45 2 x 2 with Solid Round Bottom Tube
Parts: Slope, Inverted {Black}

Because most of the time you are just checking 1 type of parts. This time it
were the windows.
https://www.bricklink.com/messageThread.asp?ID=278353
Before that the wires, etc
I never saw requests from you were you checked the whole inventory of a set.

I confirmed accuracy of few vintage sets. But I don't have enough sources
and desire to buy vintage sets in sealed condition, just to check the whole inventory.
I only check parts that came in variations and these parts cannot be added by
buying one sealed copy because there is no guarantee that new copy would come
with the alternate parts that I want to be added to inventory.

  And even when I asked you about the slopes, you didn't give me an answer.

For now, I am paid zero dollars per month for what I am doing for bricklink.
Based on that, I may prefer to do other things sometime, that are more important.
My copy is from 1977 and it came with 3660.
I sold another sued copy few weeks ago and I think it came with 3660old. Not
sure if the buyer will take the time to check that and the production date of
motor.

The only difference is explained above.

***
I do have more change requests to submit but my goal is to improve the inventory
and not create other mistake indirectly. If I submit something to be added as
alternate, now I see this may make a part from regular section to be removed
even if that was not my request.
So I won't submit those change requests for now.

In this case I checked my own set and admin or not. I also have the right to
add change requests. And it turned out that your mint set had exactly the same
parts as in my changes.

Again, my set is produced in 1977 (technically it might been produced late 1976,
but that does not change anything)
so we just expect to find the later variations of parts in my copy.
I get an impression that you entirely ignore the production time of a set as
a big piece of evidence for catalog requests.

All Admins are working very hard to check requests. And believe me, it's
not my hobby to reject requests.

Never thought this.

  I want the same as you: improve inventories.

That is not the issue. Indeed, you technically did not reject any of my requests.
But I checked for 4 years (actually 5 years), checked many copies, submitted
many requests for this set
https://www.bricklink.com/catalogInvChangeItem.asp?itemType=S&itemNo=183-1&viewDate=Y&viewStatus=1

and now, I am 100% sure it came with 3660old and 3404ac01. Having seen them
being removed from this set by one single click, without any discussion, I am
naturally disappointed.
I may find photos of a new copy of 183 in my older laptop, coming 3404ac01 but
photos of new sets are so hard-to-find specially if we need to find one single
part in those few photos we have.

https://www.bricklink.com/messageThread.asp?ID=278353

At that time you didn't have proof either of these parts came in this set.
Your 'mint' set had the same variants as mine (these variants are in
the inventory now).
As soon as there is proof for other variants, the parts will be added.

We want to be sure, that - IF another turntable came in early releases of this
set - that it actually was 3404c01 ór 3404c02. The only way finding out, was
to remove the turntable that was added based on instructions only.

this is the type of change request I am talking about)

Here are more examples I have in my mind

https://www.bricklink.com/messageThread.asp?ID=280125

https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1207368

Parts: Slope, Inverted {Black}
is one single used set.

Parts: Window {White}
and the other half come with

Part No: 27  Name: Window 1 x 2 x 1
*
27 Window 1 x 2 x 1
Parts: Window {White}

but as I checked many used copies, this is very unlikely. It is very likely the
motor is not original, it could be from 182 or 107. We have even seen an MISB
copy of a 12v set whose motor was not original. See

https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1076865

* I see some double standards here. One single used copy is considered
as a proof to remove this part

Part No: 3660old Name: Slope, Inverted 45 2 x 2 with Solid Round Bottom Tube
*
3660old Slope, Inverted 45 2 x 2 with Solid Round Bottom Tube
Parts: Slope, Inverted {Black}

Not
sure if the buyer will take the time to check that and the production date of
motor.

The discussion is right here in your own post:
https://www.bricklink.com/messageThread.asp?ID=278353

At that time you didn't have proof either of these parts came in this set.

You just confirmed that if I submit to add a variant to a set as alternate with
a reliable source, you will remove the first variant from the inventory, unless
if I find a reliable source for the variant that is already in the regular section.

  Your 'mint' set had the same variants as mine (these variants are in
the inventory now).

Strange comment.
Again, and again, and again: my set is from 1977. It is NOT produced in 1976.
In whatever parts it comes with, it proves nothing about what parts the set came
with in its first year of production.

Let's not forget that the blue connectors
[p=x466c11]
appeared only in the first few weeks/months of production of this set.
https://www.bricklink.com/messageThread.asp?ID=267050

  As soon as there is proof for other variants, the parts will be added.

We want to be sure, that - IF another turntable came in early releases of this
set - that it actually was 3404c01 ór 3404c02.

If I don't submit more inventory requests for other sets to add certain parts
as alternate, you would not need to be sure for the parts that are already in
the regular section.
No question asked, therefore no answer needed.

  The only way finding out, was
to remove the turntable that was added based on instructions only.

!!??
Many parts are in the regular section that were added only based on instructions.
The only way finding out if they actually come with the set is to remove them
from the inventory. Why don't you do this?
