Actually it would be better to make this an undetermined sign and add both signs
(embossed and surface) to the catalog. Would that be ok?!

It would make it more clear, since in between (from mid 70's to 1980), TLG
used the sign below in Embossed Print:

Part No: 649p01b Name: Road Sign Triangle with Level Crossing Small, Thick Pattern
*
649p01b Road Sign Triangle with Level Crossing Small, Thick Pattern
Parts: Road Sign, Decorated {White}

In the meantime please add the note.
Same for the other two signs.

What is your evidence that surface print was made since 1980? How do we know
it is 1980 and not 1981 (well, and not 1982 or 1983...)?
The set 6306 was in market for many years and one single new copy of it do not
prove that ALL the copies from 1980 came also with road signs with surface prints.

For example, do you have photos of a new

in which there is a catalog from 1980 and at least one of the road signs is surface
print?

Otherwise, I find 1981 to be more likely. In 1980 many sets were introduced in
comparison to 1981. Instead I count many parts whose molds were changed exactly
in 1981 as if TLG focused more on part's molds and functionality in 1981.
The same happened in 1985.

My Evidence for Surface Print since 1980 is my sealed bought set 6306-1 and the
fact that all the new signs that came in this set, do not exist in embossed print.

This doesn't mean that other signs didn't come with embossed print in
sets after 1979, as leftovers. But as you know, there has to be hard evidence
for that. I am not going to say this anymore, because I already spend too much
time repeating this again and again.

So please do not use this catalog request for another discussion about set 7834.
That discussion is closed untill sign 649p01 is found in a sealed bag.

This catalog request has nothing to do with all the items you mention below.
What I do know about moulds, is that they are extremely expensive and TLG didn't
change moulds very often because of that. Besides that, I don't think the
print has anything to do with the mould.

So please do not use this catalog request for another discussion about set 7834.

My comment can still be read here
https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1332712

The number of times the words 7834 or 649p01 or 649p01b are mentioned in my comment
is ZERO. I had bolded what my comment is addressing. Here it is again:
Surface Print 1980 and later

so I fail to see how I use this catalog request for another discussion.

The year of surface print (1980 or 1981 or later?) can be related to any part
or set containing a printed/embossed part produced in 1980 or 1981 but my comment
was readily not directly related to parts 649p01/649p01b in 7834.

That discussion is closed until sign 649p01 is found in a sealed bag.

I will comment more on the other thread but I think this is impossible and will
not happen even if we find 10000 new boxed-opened copies of 7834.

This catalog request has nothing to do with all the items you mention below.
What I do know about moulds, is that they are extremely expensive and TLG didn't
change moulds very often because of that. Besides that, I don't think the
print has anything to do with the mould.

Diana

I find them related because I have figured TLG put special efforts in certain
years such as 1981 and 1985 to redesign parts. I don't know how expensive
moulds were for TLG and their internal process in designing parts, but I have
figured so many changes in part design in 1981 or 1985 in comparison to other
years in 1980s. For example, the following part

Part No: x461 Name: Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with Steam Engine Cylinder, Round Surfaces
*
x461 Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with Steam Engine Cylinder, Round Surfaces
Parts: Plate, Modified
was only produced for about 6-9 months (summer 1980-end of 1980) but it was replaced
since early 1981 by

Part No: x461b Name: Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with Steam Engine Cylinder, Round Surfaces, Interior Grooves
*
x461b Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with Steam Engine Cylinder, Round Surfaces, Interior Grooves
Parts: Plate, Modified

This fact is yet not going to prove anything but I still think it was worth mentioning.

I have no intention or gain in disagreeing anybody's statements and I
understand most people don't like their statements be opposed but the purpose
of catalog request on the forum is that other members write their comments and
you had mentioned my comments and catalog/inventory requests are welcomed but
I don't see that here.

As a contributor, my comments have a very low weight and the catalog and inventory
admins are in power position and your requests will be approved but in future,
other members can read my comments so I thought it would be worth writing them
here for future reference

In your catalog request you claimed that surface print was made on road signs
since 1980. I think this is incorrect and the correct year is 1981. (putting
aside the first period of surface prints on road signs in early 70s)

For the correct year to be 1980, we need to have one single road sign with surface
print that was produced in 1980 and we should know the set including this road
sign was produced in 1980 (the set being first released/introduced in 1980 is
not giving any evidence).
The correct year may be 1980 as you claimed , you may have a hard evidence for
it too but so far, you have not shared it with us on the forum.

If I am forced to bet $1000 on choosing between the following two options based
on what I know, I choose the second one.

1) After the first period of surface period in early 70s, the first road sign
with surface print was produced in 1980.

2) After the first period of surface period in early 70s, the first road sign
with surface print was produced in 1981 and all those produced since early 70s
until the end of 1980 had embossed print.

My Evidence for Surface Print since 1980 is my sealed bought set 6306-1

This set was produced in between 1980-87. The chance that your new copy was produced
in 1980 is about %13. In the box, there was a catalog. Do you still have it?
if so, what catalog was inside the box?

and the fact that all the new signs that came in this set, do not exist in embossed print.

The following road signs were produced for first time in 1980 coming with 6306
and maybe other sets. If we don't find them with embossed prints, yes, that
will prove it but we need to check many copies of each road signs to get this
conclusion because only about 13% of all copies of 6306 ever produced were from
1980 and some stop signs even came in other sets produced after 1981.

Have you checked all the items above in your collection? How many of which do
you have?

I have two boxed copies of set 6390 and I checked

Part No: 80045 Name: Road Sign Round with No Parking Pattern
*
80045 Road Sign Round with No Parking Pattern
Parts: Road Sign, Decorated

In one of them, the print is embossed. (and I don't remember if my used copies
came with them or If they missed this road signs and I completed them with my
spare parts but I think this is not important)

I have not checked my other road signs but I have few of each of the above 6
road signs.

But as you know, there has to be hard evidence
for that. I am not going to say this anymore, because I already spend too much
time repeating this again and again.

I confirm that for any claim, there has be a hard evidence and I can also repeat
it "there has to be a hard evidence"

the fact that all the new signs that came in this set, do not exist in embossed print.

I am afraid this is incorrect as the item 80045 (of the 6 new road signs introduced
in 1980) has embossed print. My apologies in disagreeing with you here but I
have a hard evidence for this and I can ship it to anyone in the catalog/inventory
team.

Otherwise, I find 1981 to be more likely. In 1980 many sets were introduced in

I am afraid this is incorrect as the item 80045 (of the 6 new road signs introduced

have a hard evidence for this and I can ship it to anyone in the catalog/inventory

This part came in Embossed as well as Surface Print:
- Embossed Print 1969 to mid 70's
- Surface Print 1980 and later

What is your evidence that surface print was made since 1980? How do we know
it is 1980 and not 1981 (well, and not 1982 or 1983...)?
The set 6306 was in market for many years and one single new copy of it do not
prove that ALL the copies from 1980 came also with road signs with surface prints.

For example, do you have photos of a new

6306-1 (Inv) Road Signs
12 Parts, 1980
Sets: Town: Classic Town: Supplemental
in which there is a catalog from 1980 and at least one of the road signs is surface
print?

I went through my collection of road signs. Out of 7 road signs that were first
produced in 1980, i have 4 of them with embossed print. See photos attached.

We do appreciate all contributions, but (like you) we want inventories to be
correct and for some change requests that means we need more evidence then others.

As you know I have been doing research on these types of road signs, but I am
far from finished. And the reason for that IS the question when TLG started with
Surface Prints. I only submitted Catalog Requests for 3 signs so far, to add
a note like this one. I also suggested to make 2 new entries for Embossed- /
Surface Print. All with just one goal (purpose), to get a correct timeline for
all these road signs and add the correct types in the correct sets.

As for my box 6306 and it's contents.

Unfortunately I always took all paperwork out of sealed sets (after opening and
check contents), because I keep paperwork separated. But I always added a note
to my excel-sheet which instructions, catalogs, etc. came in the set and if I
bought it sealed or not. This set doesn't have such a note. So either I forgot
the note, or it didn't come with a catalog. The Box says 1980 only, which
is no evidence it is from 1980 or not. All signs in my box have surface print.
So I didn't see any reason to add images, for it doesn't prove anything.
Besides it's hard to tell by image if the print is embossed or surface.

Besides the Road Sign Boxes with their original contents of signs, I have a separate
collection of road signs from 1955-1997. I kept one of each sign in different
variants (print itself, print embossed or surface, bar- or tube-bottom).

I don't have (and never had) one of these 'new 6306 signs' in embossed
print, nor did I ever hear about their existence, untill now. So thanks for your
contribution. Did I know sooner, I would never have called this evidence.

Since the 4 you mentioned (to exist in embossed print) also came in set 1060-1,
I asked Paul if he still has the set and if he would want to check year & types.
I wonder if set 6390 and/or set 1060 only were released in USA/Canada. Although
I bought a lot of USA/Canada sets, I never bought one of these. This could explain
the fact that I don't have any of these signs in embossed print.

I will park my research on Road Signs, untill I know if separate entries can
be submitted for embossed-/surface printed signs. If not, further research doesn't
make sense, for we will probably never know which prints came in which sets.

About this catalog request for road sign 649p01.
Just thought it was a way to hear from other members that they found an embossed
one in a sealed bag from 1980 or later.

But you are right. There's no proof so far that Surface print came in 1980,
nor if it came in whatever year after that. So hereby...

my changed request:

Please add the following note:
This part came in Embossed as well as Surface Print.

Sets like 575, 6377, 6383, 6387, 6390, 6391 and 6393 are sold only in USA and/or
Canada but few of these sets were sold by (I think) others retailers in Europe:
6391 (and 6393): Germany
6377: France
6387: UK (and Germany?)

Almost all my collection come from Europe and most of those come from Germany
and UK.
I only bought exclusive sets from USA, such as 6393, 6383,... . Vintage Lego
is rare in Canada. So I am certain the 4 types of embossed road signs in my photos

between 1980-83, I was really hoping to find an embossed print one in one or
both of my 6390, and I did.

In particular, I bought and received two days ago this one from UK:
https://www.ebay.ca/itm/165350782799

and the three

Part No: 649p02 Name: Road Sign Triangle with Road Crossing Pattern
*
649p02 Road Sign Triangle with Road Crossing Pattern
Parts: Road Sign, Decorated
have embossed print.
The particular reason I bought it is that

Part No: 649pb08b Name: Road Sign Triangle with Skidding Car Pattern (Car with no Tire on Back)
*
649pb08b Road Sign Triangle with Skidding Car Pattern (Car with no Tire on Back)
Parts: Road Sign, Decorated
has tube-bottom.

I have photos of a NIB 7834 in which the road signs are surface print (here we
can know from photo because the size of print is larger if it is surface print)
They are not in sealed bags as I think they should not.
Inside the box, there is a catalog from 1981. The photos belong to the store
Bluxe in France. As he told me, he collected his collection from local sellers
in Paris.
I guess the catalog is this:

Catalog No: m81eutr1 Name: 1981 Mini Train European (EU I 111483)
*
m81eutr1 1981 Mini Train European (EU I 111483)
Catalogs: 1981: Train

or

Catalog No: m81eutr2 Name: 1981 Mini Train European (EU II 111583)
*
m81eutr2 1981 Mini Train European (EU II 111583)
Catalogs: 1981: Train

Please ad the following note:

This part came in Embossed as well as Surface Print:
- Embossed Print 1969 to mid 70's
- Surface Print 1980 and later

What is your evidence that surface print was made since 1980? How do we know
it is 1980 and not 1981 (well, and not 1982 or 1983...)?
The set 6306 was in market for many years and one single new copy of it do not
prove that ALL the copies from 1980 came also with road signs with surface prints.

For example, do you have photos of a new

Set No: 6306 Name: Road Signs
*
6306-1 (Inv) Road Signs
12 Parts, 1980
Sets: Town: Classic Town: Supplemental
in which there is a catalog from 1980 and at least one of the road signs is surface
print?

My apologies in disagreeing with you here but I
have a hard evidence for this and I can ship it to anyone in the catalog/inventory
team.

I went through my collection of road signs. Out of 7 road signs that were first
produced in 1980, i have 4 of them with embossed print. See photos attached.

We do appreciate all contributions, but (like you) we want inventories to be
correct and for some change requests that means we need more evidence then others.

Thanks.

So I am certain the 4 types of embossed road signs in my photos
come from Europe, except this one that I took from 1980

Part No: 80045 Name: Road Sign Round with No Parking Pattern
*
80045 Road Sign Round with No Parking Pattern
Parts: Road Sign, Decorated
Because most productions of this set is from 1980 and I think It was only sold
between 1980-83, I was really hoping to find an embossed print one in one or
both of my 6390, and I did.

Could you please add images of the signs you found in set 6390.
I am especially interested in the STOP sign, for I found 4 different prints in
my collection (the actual print I mean). Bricklink only has 1 entry and an image
with 2 different prints. It doesn't show the surface sign I have, for that
print is larger.

has tube-bottom.

My set 940-1 has this sign with bar-bottom and set 939-1 with tube-bottom.
Both sets are from 1975-1979, but 940-1 is older (has the older P sign without
300m and only 1 tube-bottom sign).

I have photos of a NIB 7834 in which the road signs are surface print (here we
