Their strength seems to be the same as the other I have with the older spring
type: Somewhere between 1000 and 1100 grams on my weight.

The change of spring is not related directly to the change of part number. I
have other 4255's in my stock with the old spring type. Could it be related
to a recently added PCC?

*
42141-1 (Inv) McLaren Formula 1 Team 2022 Race Car

and it has the new type spring.

It's listed with PCC 6378480, which is new.
The Lego name for 731c04 (design 76537) is "SHOCK ABSORBER, EXTRA HARD".
The Lego name for this new PCC (design 89954) is "SHOCK ABSORBER, EXTRA HARD,
NO. 1".

Not sure what's up with the "NO. 1", but it has a different spring compared
to pictures of

Even if the strength seems the same I think its important these have separate
entries purely for aesthetic reasons.

I'll check the recent sets that 731c04 came in and if all is well with those
we won't need to split 731c04 and can just add the pending 731c07 as a new
entry.

4255 is just the design number for the cylinder body portion of the assembly
(the yellow part in the small image above). It is just one part of the three
parts making up the shock absorber. This part of the assembly is not specific
to this one shock absorber, so the design number 4255 can be used on other shock
absorber assemblies with appropriate assembly constants. For the one above, the
alternate item number is 4255c04, so it has the appropriate assembly constant.

As for what to do with the newest shock absorber, I think it should be a new
part due to the specific looks of the spring compared to the others.

Cheers,
Randy
