I'm interested in doing a bit of a study. For myself, as a seller and
as a buyer, I'm firmly of the belief that the seller should leave feedback
first. I myself leave feedback when I've shipped the order, even in some
circumstances once the order is packed - at any rate, definitely before the buyer
would leave it. Some have the opposite opinion - that the buyer should leave
feedback first.

Limited evidence (I have a small store, not many orders, maybe my store attracts
a certain kind of buyer?) suggests that leaving feedback when I do has a positive
effect on whether or not I receive feedback in kind. The reason I say this
is that my feedback-to-orders ratio has consistently been between 65-70%, and
yet I've heard that the average feedback-to-orders ratio across BL is more
like 50%. Now I try to be professional and communicative, and because my store
is small I can ship quickly, but many other stores on BL that are larger than
mine offer exemplary service, and I don't think my service is so good as
to account for the higher feedback ratio.

So, if you're willing to answer, would you mind answering with:

- when you leave feedback (before or after the buyer: I don't know if it
has to be specific)
- what your store's current feedback-to-orders ratio is

Thanks!

Buyer always leaves feedback first. The transaction isn't complete on the
seller's end until the buyer is happy with their order.

And why do you feel like buyers are happy with their order only if they leave
feedback? I'd assume as long as they don't complain they're happy.
There are many times (not on bricklink) that I just never got around to leaving
feedback though I was satisfied with my purchase.

I rarely leave feedback/reviews on purchase I make on other sites regardless
of what there for, admittedly that maybe partly because of what use I plan for
them

Nah, I have not left feedback many times when I was unhappy with an order but
didn't want to be petty. I just dislike the store and move on.

I leave positive feedback when;
- buyer marks the order as completed, regardless if I got feedback from buyer
or not. If a order is marked as completed, I assume the buyer is happy.
- One month after order date, regardless if I got feedback from buyer or not.
I assume that the parcel will have arrived in that time and the buyer is happy.
The one month period is a bit longer for international buyers, as shipping can
take quite some time.

I leave negative feedback in case of NPB.

My feedback rate is about 55%
The first few months when my store was open I gave positive feedback right after
sending the parcel, I didn't notice any (big) change in the feedback rate
when I changed to my current feedback approach.

It doesn't matter to me. I leave mass feedback about once a month to all
my buyers, regardless of whether they've left feedback or not. I don't
understand at all why people feel like this is even a question. As a seller,
if the customer has paid and not caused trouble, leave feedback. As a buyer,
if the seller has shipped out your order in a timely manner and everything is
satisfactory, leave feedback. Why does whether the other party has left feedback
or not have any influence in your own feedback giving? I honestly don't understand
this "issue" that so many people have.

My feedback percentage is 58%.

The order of feedback doesn't matter to me. I typically leave as a seller
once I've posted the order and I am filing it. But I do now check to see
if the buyer leaves feedback. If they don't, I don't bother leaving it
for them.

Why so vindictive? Just leave the feedback, you are the seller, the professional,
a buyer may not even no how or where to leave feedback, if they know at all.
You'd be helping the community with scoring the buyers that cause no issues.

I too leave feedback when my buyer pays. I don't really care whether or not
they leave feedback about me (as long as it's not non-positive ). Feedback
isn't a trade - to me it's a service to the community to flag whether
or not a user is OK for doing business with. It's not a gift or a service
to the person I post the feedback about, and not something to negotiate with.

You could be right about leaving feedback immediately increasing the odds of
getting feedback back, I had the same impression. Leaving it upon payment, I
think my feedback ratio is around 70% as you say.

Actually your feedback ratio is better then 70%, it is 81%. For a store with
5000+ orders that is a really good percentage. Makes we wonder if Euro countries
take leaving feedback more seriously or are you just a really nice guy?

I make it 76.8%.

You shouldn't include feedback received as a buyer, otherwise it is possible
for the rate to be over 100%.

It's 77% (5111/6659) - maybe you factored his buyer feedback in? In any case
that's pretty exceptional.

Hm yes, you guys are right, I checked after I posted that and noticed it was
over 70%. Half of my orders are from Dutch customers. My idea, purely a theory,
is that it could be a Dutch cultural thing. I think Dutch people like to give
(blunt) feedback to other people, tend to be community/cooperation-minded because
it's a small country, and they have always been kind of internet nerds -
they like to spend a lot of time online and are really overrepresented on the
web (I believe that, at least in the past, .nl was the most registered domain
after .com and .co.uk). I don't know... Something like an online community
where you leave feedback about other people just strikes me as something Dutch
people are into. Could be wrong, but just one theory - the second one is of course
that I am just an amazing seller

Another thing with percentage rates is when you get buyers like this. I could
have stoplisted the two buyers in positions 3 and 4 as they don't leave feedback
and my rate would be almost 1% higher. But what is more important ... sales or
feedback rates.

It looks like you have quite a few high/low ones as well as high/0. Still, better
they place orders and not leave feedback than not place orders.

For some it seems to be the latter. One BL seller got exposed on social media
for leaving his customers neutrals, stating they hadn't given him feedback.
He removed those eventually.

For us it is simple. We leave positive feedback after payment. The vast majority
of customers probably don't care, but we know of at least a few who appreciated
this very much, and it factored into their decision to shop with us again. This
alone makes it an easy decision for us.

As for "well, the transaction still can go South" - sure. We actually lost around
CAD 300 to a customer (200 in product, 100 in shipping) - shipment looked to
be lost, tracking showed nothing, we refunded and he said he would repay. Tracking
eventually showed delivered, customer acknowledged, and then communication stopped.
FB adjusted, done.

Those, in our experience, are so infrequent that the posibility of scoring repeat
orders far ouweigh them.

Niek.

I'm finding the discussions interesting as a buyer only here my feedback
ratio currently is about 99% posted and 94% received, I leave my feed back when
I mark order as complete whether the seller has left it for me.

I can see the reasons behind why people do the different approaches and can understand
them.

For example:

If you leave it once you have received payment/shipped it the buyer has in essence
completed their part of the transaction and anything that comes up after that
is around after sales service

However if you wait until it is marked complete or a specific timescale and leave
it then you are ensuring that the full transaction including any potential after
sales incidents have been dealt with.

It isn't guaranteed that there will be no trouble after an order is marked
"Complete". I had a sale marked "complete" and positive feedback from buyer.

Thanks!

I leave feedback when a buyer marks their order as complete and often do it once
a month or so in batches. I don't believe that a buyer is without responsibility
in an order. The way they handle issues (whether caused by me or caused by them)
is certainly applicable to feedback. I always do my best to not have issues in
my orders but occasionally when there are I politely address any issues that
arise and fix them as best as possible and I think my feedback reflects that.

That being said, I do not believe I have left anything but positive got my buyers
with the exception of NPBs from years ago before instant checkout.

I'm not sure what my ratio is or where to find that information, but that
doesn't matter to me. Having over 4000 feedback, I think customers can get
the idea.

I leave feedback directly receiving payment. nothing more the buyer can to deserve
a +1 once he has paid.
I get feedback from 60% of all transactions.

Sometimes, for low feedback buyers, with paypal, I hold my feedback for a bit
longer.

In a perfect world the seller would leave feedback as soon as the buyer has made
payment.
At that point the buyer has completed their end of the transaction. When the
seller completes their end of the transaction by successfully delivering the
goods the buyer should leave feedback.

I leave feedback when I've shipped the order. It's kind of my "all done,
ready to file" mark. Worst case scenario, I can go back and change it if the
customer turns out to be some unreasonable idiot but I haven't come across
one of those here yet. The worst I've seen were a couple of bogus orders
from the same scammer.

My feedback ratio is at around 65% and looking at the majority of the ones that
don't leave feedback, they are mostly new buyers.

Possibly, but that may be waranted. Have you had to deal with a problematic
buyer before? Because there are a few of them. I had one the other day that
accused me of not sending some parts from an order when they were in fact sent:

https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1324825

Would it not have been waranted to leave a less than positive feedback for them?
I didn't, but I think I may have been justified had I done that. I just
don't think the buyer's part of the transaction has been completed simply
after they pay.

Although I have not opened my store for business here I do have over 7000 transactions
on the auction site and problematic buyers are not limited to Bricklink.

It falls under 'regular business'. You deal with it, other buyers and
sellers can usually tell who the D-bags are by glancing over feedback.

I guess my question would then be, how are you supposed to tell the "D-bags"
from glancing over feedback, if feedback is being given before the whole transaction
is complete?

If a buyer is being problematic after recieving the order (claiming missing parts,
chargebacks, rude, etc.) and you already left positive feedback because they
paid, then that feedback is of no help to future buyers and sellers. Not that
sellers have much of a say in who their customers are.

Yes, it could be they know they have supplied substandard items and think the
buyer will complain, or other seller's fault reasons.

But then they could be afraid of chargebacks, returns, buyer claiming missing
parts, buyer refusing the order, etc, or other buyer's fault reasons.

As a seller, I leave feedback when I ship the order.
As a buyer, I leave feedback as soon as the order is completed, regardless whether
the seller has left feedback yet.

my feedback percentage is just over 79% (out of approaching 50000 orders)

I leave feedback as part of my packing/shipping process, then I typically never
have to look at that order again… Simple.

I've always beleived that feedback is for the purpose of rating a store rather
than the other way round and so if a customer chooses to leave feedback I will
do the same in return but only out of courtsey besides how can a seller view
the buyer as a positive experience when the customer has not even yet received
their order?

For instance some buyers are patient others may demand a refund before the item
has even had fair chance to arrive? Some buyers will be understanding to issues
that are out of a sellers control others will not? Some buyers will be understanding
if a seller makes a mistake others will deem this unacceptable and make irrational
demands and some buyers may even attempt to make false claims such as suggesting
that what you've sent is counterfeit?
Some buyers may even leave negative feedback before you even know their is a
problem and thats certainly not the sort of buyer you want to be leaving positive
feedback for!

The buyer can only rate their experience of a seller based on whether they are
either happy with their order or they are happy/unhappy with how the seller resolves
issues that are brought to their attention and a seller can only rate a buyer
based on the understanding that they have either received and are happy with
their order or they have been notified of a problem and are rating the buyer
based on their overall conduct when trying to address the issue for them!

If a buyer is completely uncoperative then a seller may feel in their right to
leave a negative but that would be difficult if a seller has left feedback before
the transaction has completed?

On the same token I have voiced many times that for the greater good I'd
actually sacrifice being able to leave non positive feedback for buyers and go
with an ebay feedback system but in this thread and yesterdays thread most seem
to claim the right thing to do is for seller to leave feedback first but how
is it then that:-

A) Most sellers I deal with only leave feedback after I leave feedback for them
which is fine as far as I'm concerened for the reasons already mentioned

B) When I mention about adopting ebays feedback system where sellers can't
leave neutrals/negatives for buyers the vast majority don't like the idea
stating they want to be able to warn others and protect themselves from bad buyers
and yet apprently almost everyone leaves feedback first at the point of payment???

As a buyer I'll never give a feedback if the seller doesn't give it first.
If he doesn't care (when I've done my task), why would I?

Please read the previous (heated) discussion

Thanks!

"Who should leave feedback first?"

I actually don't believe there is a wrong answer to that question... the
topic always brings up a wealth of differing opinions; and yet, they all seem
to be correct (at least I can see the reasoning for each opinion, and agree with
them based upon that reasoning)...

That said, for myself, I have been leaving positive feedback for a Buyer after
I ship their order (it's part of my process); only on rare occasions will
I not do so... I see a Buyer as making payment for an order as their requisite
part of the transaction, and the verifying, packing, and shipping of their order
is my responsibility; everything else after that is in the hands of the shipping
service... if something goes wrong, I will do my best to remedy the issue with
a communicative Buyer; but that doesn't change the fact that the Buyer did
everything required of them by placing an order and paying me...

So am I wrong for leaving feedback before the Buyer receives their order,
considering the transaction isn't actually 'completed' at that point?
Maybe. However, I have too many things going on in my life to be worried about
whether the USPS damages the package or fails to deliver it (which have both
happened on occasion); but those issues do not change the fact that the Buyer
placed an order from me, and paid for said order promptly... the only thing in
my control if something goes wrong during shipping is to work with the Buyer
to make things right (which I believe my feedback illustrates that I do)...

Am I losing out on feedback from my Buyers by doing this this way? Well, maybe
(see my stats in the screenshot); but there's no guarantee that those Buyers
were going to leave me feedback regardless; besides, I am merely expressing my
gratitude to my Buyers in leaving that feedback. I cannot control all outcomes--nor
do I really attempt to--but I can control my communication with my Buyers,
and I feel that feedback is a critical part of that (regardless of whether others
see it that way or not)...

So the truest answer to the question of "Who should leave feedback
first?"
is simply "to each their own"...

Life is Good.

I want to add that I don't think there's necessarily a wrong answer either
(although I do have my own opinion); I was more interested in whether the time
at which the seller leaves feedback has an effect on whether the buyer leaves
feedback. I think it does - but I'd like to see how it works for other stores.

As I mentioned the other day:
Hi all! Been on here about 12 years and on ebay about 12 before that (as a seller
and sometimes buyer). It seem to be a matter of seller preference when to leave
feedback. Everyone agrees that the buyer has only one job, to pay, but no one
mentions that the buyer is basically 'taking the risk' of paying, then
hoping to receive an order. Because of the 'risk' factor involved, I
personally like to reward the buyers' 'good faith payment' by leaving
feedback right away, just sayin'

?

Why would the buyer be taking a risk as almost all pay with Paypal?
Besides the responsibility of loss is all on the seller anyway and the more economically
the seller chooses to ship their items the more risk they take!

Truth is, any time you part with your money prior to receiving merchandise, you
are taking a risk. The paypal charge-back option does not really address dissatisfaction
with the merchandise, only loss or non-receipt and don't forget this option
is time consuming.
As a buyer on bricklink, I pay immediately and cross my fingers that any 'used'
part or figure will not be 'too' used! Nowadays, I generally buy new,
as experience has shown me that item condition is totally subjective.
As a seller on bricklink, I choose to ship as economically as possible, and am
well aware of the risks involved.
On a retail note...when I have ordered and paid for things at big box stores
and either not received them or have issues, the stores always make good by either
refunding or resending, without my having to involve paypal or credit companies.
As an additional note, I really enjoy receiving feedback on my promptness in
paying as a buyer.

I have a very small store.
My feedback rate is about 73%
In most cases, I leave the feedback after I receive mine. If I have a first time
buyer with 0 feedbacks I leave the feedback first.

As a seller I leave feedback once the order is packed, with very few exceptions.
For example a new user that was being weird in some way. I don’t want to leave
feedback if I feel there may be a problem buyer. In those cases I wait until
the order is received by them. As a buyer, I leave it once I’ve verified the
order.

I got 950 feedback on 1475 orders, so about 67% if I’m thinking right.

Feedback is always appreciated, but I really don’t care if I get it. I feel everyone
SHOULD leave feedback though, I feel it’s the polite way to conclude the transaction.
Kind of like saying have a good day when a customer leaves a store.

Matt

As a seller I am always leaving feedback after I have received a feedback from
the buyer or when buyer marks order as completed. In all other occasions I am
usually not leaving feedback at all. So far I had 1,975 feedbacks left as a seller
and I have 3,133 orders so far, so the ratio is about 63% with 99.85% positive
feedback (only 2 neutral and 1 negative in all store history). Not bad in my
opinion so I am sticking to this strategy.

My order of processing is as follows,

1. Get payment
2. Ship the order
3. Enter tracking info, Mark the order shipped
4. Send the drive thru, for domestic purchases in Native language, for international
orders in English (Wording in the drive thru template even suggest the transaction
is over for me)
5. Post the feedback

Steps 3 to 5 take just 15-20 seconds thanks to notification template system of
the Bricklink and me stopping giving customized feedbacks to buyers. The most
time consuming part is the entry of the tracking number. (I can actually employ
a barcode reader to enter tracking code and make this time shorter)

Time to time I check my store for the received feedback

300 posted, 208 received, my rate is 69% . The order of the given feedback might
affect received feedback but there are other major factors that does more heavily
affect it..

- Buyer's mindset, is it a newcomer? is it a casual buyer and regards the
service here as any other service he/she is receiving for other stuff.
- The speed and service quality of the selected courier
- Quality of the parts
- Packaging
and the most important of all I guess is the Pricing which can also influence
your buyer's diversity and hence the type of feedback if any you receive..

Seller giving the feedback first actually affects another aspect of the shopping
experience for the buyer : Buyers more openly express themselves about the issues
if feedback weapon is not directed to them. And they tend to show less prejudice
about the mishaps arising in the transaction in general.

As a new seller I'm still working this out but my current approach is to
leave feedback once they mark it as "complete" and ideally leave me feedback.
I give buyers a day or two to leave the feedback first but if they don't
I still give them their feedback regardless.

- Leave feedback when the buyer indicates the transaction is over. That is either
they leave feedback for you or they mark the order complete.
- 60% of my buyers give feedback
- I probably leave feedback 75% of the time. Buyers who never indicate through
feedback or changing order status don’t get a feedback from me.

I leave feedback about once a week. Usually that means I leave feedback first,
but not always. My feedback percentage is around 57%.

hi,
t.m.o, a seller should give feedback first as a result of quick payment and/or
good communication...before shipping
[unless the order is paid after an NPB alert..then i wait untill it is received]
and the buyer then can have a choice what was his/her expierience and leave feedback
or not

but the feedback system is not working as it should,
it can be used for pressure/blackmail retaliation as well from both sides
maybe it is time for a new concept

What would you do to improve it? Whatever you do, you change the balance of "power"

I leave feedback about once a week. Usually that means I leave feedback first,
but not always. My feedback percentage is around 57%.

I am small potatoes here on BL, but for whatever it is worth, when I sell something
I almost always leave feedback once the buyer has paid in a timely fashion.

There have been a few occasions when I have held off on leaving feedback for
buyers when I got a Peter Tingle that something wasn't going to go smoothly.
I have had what seems to be a disproportionate number of these occasions lately,
especially when selling CMFs.

I follow the same protocol on eBay and on any other site I use where there is
a feedback system in place.

Thank you

Thanks!

When I began selling (August 2020), I used to leave feedback once the buyer left
me one, but once I began receiving constant orders (about 5 per week) I changed
my strategy and left feedback once the order was completed regardless of the
buyer leaving me feedback.

In recent months, I began wondering myself what should I do, so I went back and
gave feedback to all orders that I skipped, and began leaving right after shipping
orders. Im a small store, mainly serving newcomers with 0 feedback and green
helmet to Bricklink (Mexico`s presence in BL is in its infancy), and what I`ve
found is that when I left feedback after receiving one, I had a better feedback
ratio, about 80%, but since I changed my procedure that ratio dropped, and is
currently sitting at 60%

I have a novel idea. And this is really going to sound bizarre but hear me out.
I think whenever a person wants to leave feedback they should leave feedback.
I know, I know, this sounds crazy but stay with me.

If a seller wants to leave feedback as soon as an order is placed, I think they
should. If a seller wants to wait awhile to leave feedback to make sure everything
goes smoothly, I think they should. If a seller doesn't want to spend anytime
leaving feedback at all, feel free. The one caveat to sellers leaving no feedback
at all would be that due to the policy of needing one feedback to open a store,
I think zero feedback buyers should be given positive feedback in a timely manner.

On the flip side, if a buyer wants to leave feedback as soon as they place the
order, knock your socks off. I actually get a lot of these. And this one's
rather interesting. One of the thinkings of the sellers who leave positive feedback
immediately is that the buyer is trustworthy not going to cause any future problems.
Nothing wrong with a buyer who has that same trust in the seller. And if a buyer
wants to wait to receive their package and then leave feedback, have at it. And
if a buyer never leaves feedback, well that's fine too.

All six of these are perfectly reasonable. No shoulda, woulda, couldas. Follow
any of the six things regarding leaving feedback that I have mentioned and I
assure you, you will be making the right decision. Like I said, wild ideas. And
it'll free up much of your life from having to continue discussing this every
month.

As I said (or tried to say - maybe I'm not good at making myself understood),
I'm not interested in the debate, I'm interested in the information.

Reading fair, sensible, reasonable thought, can feel like a breath of fresh air
or a sunshine on the face, don't you think?

I think most will do what they perceive to be in their own interest in this regard,
irrespective anything they may post in these threads, considering human nature.
And as human nature is immutable, expect these discussions to continue as a regular
topic here in the forum. They are nevertheless interesting, to the extent any
regularly-discussed topic can be, that is.

I still think that the “feedback system” will be the last thing that e-commerce
sites end-up conquering with sound solution...

Agree 100% that the seller should leave feedback first. The transaction is completed
once shipped and sales transactions are always sealed with the salesman extending
the hand to seal the deal. Bottom line....101

There are arguments on both sides that I agree with. The argument that the sale
experience is not complete until feedback has been left, and that feedback is
part of the experience, can reasonably apply to both buyer and seller.

Feedback usually impacts the seller more than the buyer unless the buyer is new.
Buyers with no positive feedback can be blocked. Buyers with only negative
feedback are often blocked. Is there any way to block buyers based having negatives
if their total score is positive?

Once one has a feedback track record, the impact of feedback diminishes significantly.
So may the side that already has the most feedback should be first to leave feedback
for the other.

If I am buying from a new seller, I feel it is very important for me to leave
feedback as soon as I receive the order if there is no issue. If there is an
issue, as soon as the issue is either resolved, or I have given up trying to
resolve it, I feel it is important for me to leave feedback. IF I suspect I
have been scammed, I feel a need to leave feedback quickly, to protect other
buyers. But what if my suspicion is false, and the seller resolves the issue
after I leave feedback? Can I change the feedback?

I don't think they can. It would be a strange feature for BL to implement
as everyone starts at zero.

Buyers with only negative feedback are often blocked.

It doesn't haven't be only negative feedback, just negative overall for
the block to work.

Is there any way to block buyers based having negatives
if their total score is positive?

Only if you do it manually by finding and stop listing them.

You have 30 days to remove your feedback.

I have been a member about 21 years and have always wondered about this question.
I usually leave feedback after a buyer has marked the order complete or sent
feedback. Leaving it after a buyer pays makes no sense to me given that the
package become lost or stolen. Sometimes there is a missing piece, mistake,or
misunderstanding that must be resolved. Anyway I think the buyer should at least
say the order is complete before the seller sends feedback.

I also find it strange that so few buyers ever mark an order as received or complete.
It leaves the seller wondering if it arrived or there is a problem.

I also find it strange that so few buyers ever mark an order as received or complete.
It leaves the seller wondering if it arrived or there is a problem.

You really should also worry if the buyer stepped with a naked foot on your LEGO
Brick!
And ask if his kid didn't swallow those nasty Technic Pins you sent.
And check if he finally could built his Top Killer Vessel(c)(tm).
...

The buyer has to place a not problematic and pay - that's it.

Don't ask or wait for anything else.

IMO.

Those sound like reasons for the buyer to wait to leave feedback, not the seller.
