While this request is not overly important, is there a way to actually use the
fraction characters like ¼, ½, and ¾ instead of 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4?

The reason I bring this up is that whatever software is used, it orders parts
incorrectly by size.

For example, in Windscreens,

Part No: 88068  Name: Windscreen 8 x 4 2/3 x 3 2/3 Quarter Sphere (Inner) with Pins
*
88068 Windscreen 8 x 4 2/3 x 3 2/3 Quarter Sphere (Inner) with Pins
Parts: Windscreen {Trans-Clear}
and

Part No: 88067  Name: Windscreen 8 x 4 2/3 x 3 2/3 Quarter Sphere (Outer) with Hinge Holes
*
88067 Windscreen 8 x 4 2/3 x 3 2/3 Quarter Sphere (Outer) with Hinge Holes
Parts: Windscreen {Trans-Clear}
where the middle dimension is 4 2/3, are listed before

Part No: 30536  Name: Windscreen 8 x 4 x 2 Curved Taper with Locking Dual 2 Fingers
*
30536 Windscreen 8 x 4 x 2 Curved Taper with Locking Dual 2 Fingers
Parts: Windscreen {Trans-Brown (Old Trans-Black)}
and several others that have a middle dimension of 4.

I believe it's because the software reads the '4' in each entry but
then sees the '2' in '2/3' and puts it first because the next
symbol in the others is 'x'. Numbers before letters. Which then puts
the parts out of order by size.

I do not know where the software puts the fraction symbols in the order of alphabetizing.
Would '4½ x 2' be listed before '4 x 2? My suggestion only works
if a 'space' is listed ahead of all symbols, numbers, and letters.

I remember Brickstore had an ordering problem in the past. For Bricks, it once
went 1x1, 1x10, 1x12, 1x16, 1x2, etc. It has since been fixed.

Anyway, just an observation I came across working on my inventory.

It's because it's organizing things alphabetically, not numerically.
I get the same problem with remarks (AA-1, AA-10, AA-2); I'm having to put
zeros in just about everything to fix it.

It would be nice if the site could be fixed to order things numerically.

I am sure that they could be used. Although, I am not sure how they would sort.
But will we be using them? I highly doubt it, as this would require updating
thousands upon thousands upon thousands of catalog entries, and LEGO itself does
not use the fraction characters in their part names. I have already had to update
almost 800 entries for your requests to add some fractions to some plain parts,
and it takes a _lot_ of time. I believe our time is better spent on other things.

It looks like LEGO aren't consistent with those either (surprise, surprise).
At least BrickLink is consistent in the use of fractions in names.

That’s why it’s always dangerous to say “LEGO does (not) do that”

  At least BrickLink is consistent in the use of fractions in names.

And if not, we can still file changes.  Harder to do with TLG

Not being fluent in computer programming, I am not aware of the work it takes
to edit entries. The last computer language I used was BASIC back in the 80's.

Like I said, it was just a thought to further streamline the catalog entries
into the correct order. And it's not like the entries that are in the wrong
spot are miles away from their correct spot.

Just something to put on the wish list...

Yes but here isn't a Site for ordering parts by size.
It's for buyers (and eventually sellers if they've the part in stock).

I can see zero buyer being able to type ¼ to search in a part name.

1/4 is already difficult, but ¼ isn't realistic, sorry.
(While it would be more elegant, I must admit).

Only tonight?

For any Win10 users, while it's a lot more long-winded than the MacOS approach,
the quickest way is Win+. which brings up emoji and symbol input panels. Unlike
Character Map, which might be quicker for a one-off input, it remembers your
recent symbols so anything that's used regularly doesn't have to be searched
for.

Does make me wonder if I should code myself a Compose-equivalent desktop extension
though...

I'm not sure adding the Unicode fraction characters would be helpful for
sorting (as an aside, TIL that there are characters for ⅓ and ⅔!). But I don't
see why a 3rd-party app couldn't extract the dimensions from the item title
and sort on them - I think I could even write a regex to do it, something like:

https://regex101.com/r/Plv6pR/1

Length = first term
Width = second term
Height = third term

Convert to numeric values (e.g. 4 2/3 = 4.67 - being exact here is not necessary),
then sort on length, then width, then height (default to zero if not present).

Bla 1 x 1 x 2
but we would want the second one to be, well, the second one.

Yeah, I had forgotten there are a few parts like that, with just "4L" or "12L"
or whatever.

  I’m not sure there’s parts like that:
Bla 1 x 1 x 2/3

And I missed ^^^ this case too. Obviously the regex needs some refining. Still
it's doable, I think - parse out the dimensions and then sort on them.

Bla 1 x 1
Bla 1 x 1 x 2

Oh, and 1 is the default dimension for bricks… but it should be ⅓ for plates….
