Hello,

I sort a decent bit of used lego parts and it is always a struggle for me to
tell the difference between these two colors, do any of you guys have any suggestions
on how to do it easily? Or does it just come with experience?

Thanks for your time, and if you wanna check out my store feel free, I am having
a 10% sale on parts right now.

Really good light helps, and having some pieces know known and verified in each
of the colors (for comparison) can help as well.

As well as the light suggestion which is really important I'd get yourself
a stack of 2x4 bricks in the old and new greys (light and dark) as well as the
reddish browns and browns. If you stick your bricks together when you want to
compare your light / light bluish grey part putting them to the stack of bricks
really makes it stand out as the new and old colours will stand out next to each
other. I wouldn't be without my stack of 2x4 bricks for double-checking colours.

Daylight works best for me and I do use comparison bricks.

Yes, daylight is the best. Some colors of light bulbs make the two colors nearly
indistinguishable.

Also, be aware there is a large variety of color shades within each of these
colors.

Light Bluish Gray leans more towards blue.

Old Grey (Light Gray) has a hint of yellow in it.

Thanks to everyone who has given a suggestion, I think that having a stack of
bricks that I know which are which is a very helpful suggestion. I am going to
try that, and try to get a light that makes them easier to distinguish.

Thanks for all the advice, NG

Bright, unfiltered daylight. Even full spectrum artificial light doesn't
do it. Wide open windows on a sunny day is the best I have found. It may sound
weird, but like others are saying, it works.

Plus, you're always gonna miss some. It's gonna happen.

As others have mentioned, lighting is extremely helpful, but I end up missing
one or two here and there especially when it comes to the old technic pieces.
I found that if a bulk lot has a mix or part usually putting them all together,
you can catch a slight yellowish difference in the color to the old gray pieces.
Then comparing it to a mixed lot of known old gray parts, it is pretty easy
to see if it matches or not. There is a small learning curve to it, but after
you've seen it enough (same with the dark gray) it becomes obvious.
