Over the past four months (July-October) I placed 48 orders from which 10 outside
my own country. From those 10 orders, 2 orders were lost in the mail. That is
20% of orders lost!

Both had tracking, both last scans were somewhere at the customs in Amsterdam,
then nothing after that.
One was from Thailand, the other one from Germany (which shouldn't have make
it to the customs anyway since Germany is EU).
The sellers and I did everything possible so far to connect with the shipping
companies and Postnl, but to no avail. (I like to emphasize that I had no problems
with the sellers involved in the transactions, they were great!)

Packages get lost every time but 20% as in my case is exceptional.
It's getting stranger however.
Both orders were for VERY VERY VERY rare parts. Parts that seldom appear in a
shop because they were only in one set.

To prove this I include two screenshots from the price guide which show the rareness
of the parts I've ordered. The blue dot is me. As you can see the parts are
indeed very rare and pricey. None of the two are available in any shop in the
world.

I'm not paranoid (at least I hope I'm not) but the very coincidence of
ordering two very rare parts on BL that both were lost at Amsterdam customs makes
me think that there's more going on here.

Sounds like Amsterdam Customs has an AFOL agent.

How long did you wait until you declared it lost?

I sent a tracked shipment that arrived in Amsterdam October 4th, with no further
information available. Both I and the buyer tried to get information about it
with no result. But it was delivered on November 20th with no information about
why it had been delayed, or where it had been in the meantime.

So it can very well be that your shipments are not lost, but just delayed.

Helge

The July order off course has been cancelled. The order from Germany: like I
said it's strange that it's been a month since any scan was made. I had
another tracked order from Germany (all regular parts) that was delivered in
two days!

Yes, I agree that it is strange. BUT: my shipment did arrive after 7 weeks with
no updates on the tracking, so strange things do happen.

If it is theft, I doubt it has much to do with rarity and more about price point.
They can see the customs declaration. A easy to pocket plastic part worth $20
is probably tempting

I struggle with this when I send stuff overseas. I've sent many expensive
instruction books and I've been waiting for one to get stolen by a delivery
person because paypal puts the declared value right on the friggin label.

Not sure what labels paypal produces but isn't the declared value on a CN22
or CN23 form a legal requirement for international commercial shipments?

I don't think the declared value has anything to do with it. I've had
more expensive orders that were delivered without problems - from Poland, Austria,
Switzerland, Hungary.

I don't know if its changed but the forms you get at the post office can
be inserted into the pouch in a way that they can't be read by the handlers
and mail carrier. It required the customs agent to remove and read them

Again, this is how it was back in 2015 IIRC. I've been using PP labels that
long.

For efficacious answers/opinions, more frame of reference would be great, i.e.
specific timelines? Unless what you're really asking is to be psychoanalyze

But no, you’re not overly paranoid. That’s how our mind fundamentally processes
thought. How we reason through concepts such as the "coincidence" which is especially
difficult for our minds to accept.

That you posted about it shows that much, imho.

really enjoy your posts, btw.

Appreciate! And yes you're right: the way our mind processes this chaotic
world is to create logical frames. If something doesn't fit at the first
opportunity we make it fit.

Two lost orders show nothing. You need a higher number to start make conclusions.

If it is stolen because of value, then there are so many orders of higher values.
20-30 Euro is not much.

Were they sent in bubble mailers? Over the last 5 years that I am buying Lego,
ALL my packages are delivered, with or without tracking, from Germany, Netherlands,
UK, Japan,.... , Except two small mailers from the Netherlands.
(I don't make any conclusions about Netherlands's post service though.)

Postal service everywhere has suffered. I've had orders taking 3-4 months
to arrive, so please be patient with your Sellers. It's bonkers everywhere.

I don't think packages get lost at "Customs", that's just something courriers
and postal services claim to avoid talking to their customers.

PostNL is an extremely dodgy company now under investigation for fraud and malpractices.
Perhaps you were rather lucky 8/10 packages got delivered?

Hope they will find their way to your home in the end!
