I bought set 7496 from a seller in Japan, which has different box art than the
version on BL. This set does not appear to be inventoried on Bricklink, Brickset,
or anywhere, really.

This set has a 2x2 Duplo brick in a funky purple that doesn’t match my Light
Violet parts. I do not have any other color that even comes close to this one.
Apart from Light Violet, Lavender is the closest, but it was released in 2011,
which crosses that out, as this set is from 2004. My only guess is that this
is Light Lilac, but I don’t have any parts in that color, nor did it ever come
in any bricks as far as I can tell. Brickset doesn’t have info on this, and neither
does Bricklink. Any help?

that you bought new and sealed?

In your picture your set seems to have more bricks and less plates.
I’m just looking for my copy of that set to check what colour the brick was

Yes, looks like one fewer plate, one more brick (an additional 2x2 in who knows
what color)

Mind also checking the part 40709? The 40709 in my version is Dark Blue-Violet,
which also isn’t recognized here. That may be a Bricklink error, but I’m not
entirely sure. If the part in your version darker than normal blue, then it’s
probably also Dark Blue-Violet.

I’ve found the figure (stretchy) but unfortunately can’t find any of the parts.
Stretchy should be medium violet in colour if that helps

Yeah, that makes sense. Stretchy is the old Medium Violet, while the plate is
the newer one that Bricklink doesn’t recognize as being a separate color. Still
unsure about the brick.

I don't believe this bowl ever came in (Bright) Blue. 196 Dark Royal Blue
is correct.. Hopefully someone who recently opened a sealed set can update the
inventory

The set was inventoried, on BL, by Dan J in 2007. While no way to know for sure,
I would suspect it was either a US or EU release. The BL inventory only a single
Duplo 2x2 brick.

Over at Peeron, the inventory shows three Duplo 2x2 bricks, and one of them has
the color LtViolet. Be careful about that, as some BL color names diverge from
Peeron color names.
http://peeron.com/inv/sets/7496-1

Peeron also suggests, that the Duplo 2x2 Brick was only issued in LtViolet in
one set, this one. That they recognize the set as having more than a single 2x2
brick, causes me to lean towards their inventory.

The image of the cover art, posted by the OP shows three 2x2 Duplo bricks. One
is on the left, lopsided in a container. So that matches to the Peeron inventory.

Although, to be fair, it looks Orange in the OP's photos, but the Peeron
inventory says Yellow. OP, is that Duplo brick Yellow or Orange ?

Yes, I meant the cover art (or photo from the instructions) posted here on BL
- shows a medium blue 2x2 as well as a yellow (or perhaps bright light orange)
2x2 duplo brick, the latter of which is not in the inventory

The other 2x2 bricks are Light Purple and Bright Light Orange. LEGO’s 198 Bright
Reddish Lilac and 191 Flame Yellowish Orange, respectively.

So, and trying to keep this all straight, Peeron says Yellow, when they should
say BtLtOrange (TLG 191)

Peeron says Purple, when they should say BtPurple (TLG 109)

My best guess on the other Duplo 2x2 by looking at the BL color guide page ...
https://www.bricklink.com/catalogColors.asp?utm_content=subnav

If you look at Light Violet (BL # 44), the next color slightly darker is Medium
Violet (BL # 73), Peeron does relate that to MdViolet in their list, but not
tied to a TLG number. My own list says that Medium Violet is TLG # 112 Medium
bluish violet, but Peeron says 112 is RoyalBlue and ties that to Blue-Violet
on BL. So my list is wrong in that respect.

That brings us around to which one is the third Duplo brick ? Two possible candidates
are TLG 219 (Lilac) and TLG 220 (Light Lilac), nether of which Peeron has defined
a relationship to. The only way to sort it out, and assuming it's not just
a pigment variation, is to find a known part that it matches to. It may be a
very bespoke usage of 219 or 220. Beyond that, I'm out of ideas.

a relationship to. The only way to sort it out, and assuming it's not just
a pigment variation, is to find a known part that it matches to. It may be a
very bespoke usage of 219 or 220. Beyond that, I'm out of ideas.

Nita Rae

I believe that this brick is indeed 220 Light Lilac. Peeron calls Royal Blue
“Medium Bluish Violet”, which is wrong.

TLG 195 Royal Blue is Blue Violet on BL.
TLG 112 Md BlueViol. is Medium Violet on BL (along with other colors).

This brick is neither a Medium Violet, nor is it Light Violet, so TLG 220 Light
Lilac is the best conclusion. Thanks!

You are probably right about it being Light Lilac. (color 220).

As with many other colors, Bricklink doesn't have a separate color listing
for light lilac. I suspect it usually gets listed as light violet.

This duplo figure should be the same color, and it does look similar:

Peeron has a MdViolet, but does not tie it back to a TLG color. They do say that
their MdViolet is the same as BL's Medium Violet. Peeron also does not have
a 220 in their list. I wonder if their MdViolet is TLG 220.

I believe Peeron’s MdViolet is 219 Lilac, which doesn’t have its own BL ID. Medium
Violet on BL consists of three different colors all used around the same time.

- 112 Medium Bluish Violet
- 213 Medium Royal Blue
- 219 Lilac

Any part released in 2004-5 is Lilac with a few exceptions.

The ‘Medium Violet’ slope in set 7495 is 213 Medium Royal Blue, a one-off color
only used in that one set.
I have my doubts about 7333s part being Medium Violet. I suspect that it is Dark
Blue-Violet, but the last one on BL was just purchased, so I cannot confirm that.

Lilac did/more than likely was in:

The plate in this set is a match for my 3001s in Lilac, which are confirmed to
appear in 4679b-2.
4411 probably also has 3001s in Lilac.
I do not own 7917, but I’m willing to bet it has Lilac.

Any ‘Medium Violet’ part made before that is 112 Medium Bluish Violet.

The Duplo plate the and 2x4 brick in the middle are both Lilac.
The 2x4 brick on the right is Medium Bluish Violet.
I do not have Medium Royal Blue.

Any help?

Very cool, that does look like 220 to me. What color were your 2x4 plates?

Now I need to find one

I posted some photos in an earlier reply. This set had one 2x4 plate in 219 Lilac.

Yeah, that set was worth getting for that brick alone. Very cool find!

Thank you!

How should we go about adding this to the catalog? Should my parts be added as
alternates? Does this merit an entry of its own as 7496-2 because of different
box art? Should Light Lilac be added to the color list or should this just go
under Light Violet?

I'd love to see Light Lilac added to the color list. But that's me

Even if there are multiple versions of the set, I'm skeptical of the existing
inventory. Several parts don't have photos, colors are questionable (orange
instead of red?). I'd vote to have yours as the primary inventory since you
have a verifiable source, then if anyone finds an alternate version that can
confirm things like a Blue tube base, those can be re-added then

I honestly can't say with any certainty for now.

Should my parts be added as alternates?

Since you have a sealed set with a bunch of rare parts, I would not want to see
any alternates.

Does this merit an entry of its own as 7496-2 because of different box art?

There are a lot of sets from around this time that were packaged both as DUPLO
sets with the DUPLO branding and then later as Explore sets. I think we will
need to make a much larger determination about how to proceed with these before
we go that route. It was done with some Star Wars sets, so I would like to see
this done with other sets (e.g. Toy Story cloud boxes versus white boxes).

Should Light Lilac be added to the color list or should this just go under Light Violet?

I am already trying to get four new colors added to BrickLink at this time, and
I don't want to add any more to that list right now. We are slowly moving
towards a fuller color-recognition system on BrickLink, but it takes time.

I am going to move this thread to a Catalog Request so that we can make progress
on this and not lose what has been discussed.

So, for now, please sit tight on everything you have learned and don't lose
anything!

Cheers,
Randy
