Hoping for a status update from BrickLink about Canadian sales tax support please.
(As far as I'm aware, and nothing I've heard across eBay/any other retailers,
we do not have any kind of marketplace tax system rolled out - at least not yet).
We're just looking for the most basic kind of sales tax, not a new feature.
The same kind of sales tax that countries in EU and in the US were able to use
prior to the marketplace collection where it's the seller that handles the
collection of it.

Right now, the only option with Instant Checkout is to setup multiple shipping
profiles for each province/set of provinces at a certain rate and have the buyer
select the one that applies to them. When they select "wrong" (or the cheaper
option), they have to be sent an additional PayPal invoice for sales tax owing
which is not only frustrating for the seller, but for the buyer as well (especially
as the BL system will default to the cheapest IC method). I've held off turning
on parcel/larger order IC with BrickLink because of this.

The last update I received from customer support in April (and then was also
later repeated for the same timeline by admin on the forums) was July 2021. This
was the response I had received from CSR at the time:

"Thank you for contacting us and for the detailed report of this issue.
At the moment our current deadline for the launch is July 2021, however, what
you are reporting is quite serious issue, and I am hoping to get back to you
regrading that in more detail as soon as I get some feedback from the Marketplace
team regarding this particular problem that you described.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Have a nice weekend!"

All that's required for sellers is a place to put our tax number (basically
the VAT # that EU used), and then set up a provincial tax table (as the tax rate
can vary for a seller depending how they're registered with certain provinces,
or based on the province that they are from) where they input their tax rate
they are to collect from each province, and then the BL system would do the math
and show the taxes on the IC/invoices but not be responsible for collecting/remitting
to CRA. This is the same method that eBay/BrickOwl/Etsy/you-name-it use.

Thank-you as always!

Yes!

Having automated Provincial tax for the instant checkout would make everything
easier for Canadian sellers & buyers.

Agreed it would be amazing to have a tax table. Preferably one that works unlike
the one on the other auction site

Yup. The missing sales tax per province / territory is the sole reason we have
not enabled IC for domestic customers.

BL will select the lowest shipping within the same group number. My hunch is,
if each province was a different group number, it would show them all (not just
the lowest cost). That still gives the buyer the opportunity to pick the wrong
one, but it might help a little. As with many things involving shipping, it's
the lesser of various poor choices.

They're all different groups and are all displayed to the buyer, and there
can be warnings on your splash, your store terms, the shipping terms AND the
actual profile with the province and tax rate in bold and warnings along the
lines of "please make sure you pick the right shipping option for your province!"
but people still pick the default (thankfully a lot of folk are good about selecting
the proper one. The ones who appear to disregard the warnings most are other
sellers in my experience lol).

Would your life be any easier if you could unwind the original payment without
incurring any fees ? Serious question. Then ask the buyer to run it again selecting
the correct province.

That isn't possible with IC. You can't undo an order once it passes,
and if you refund, PayPal always keeps their fees now. What I mean about not
being able to undo an IC order is that the fields are grayed out and uneditable,
even if you refund and change payment status (not even sure that you can with
IC actually). So short of completely refunding/cancelling and uploading your
inventory and then having the buyer re-order, it's not possible

The only feasible option is issuing a separate PayPal invoice (or advising the
amount owing if they're using Interac E-transfer, which is also a somewhat
popular payment method in Canada). The frustrating part, especially for the buyer,
is that it shouldn't make them have to pick their province. It should just
know and charge tax accordingly (like any other e-commerce site). I'm less
bothered by the seller's inconvenience; I think it's aggravating for
the buyer.

Alrighty, thanks Russell. Sorry to nag (as I know I've been posting about
this issue since at least March 2020) and I know you guys have had your hands
full with the US and EU marketplace tax regulations. Looking forward to any updates
(even on the issue tracking page). I'll happily volunteer as a beta testing
store if needed!
