| I have two questions about Silver Metallic Lego parts (such as exhaust pipe pieces
in the 8285 set in particular):
1) I have noted that Silver Metallic parts (like round domes en round exhaust
pipes) look like 'painted' Lego. The paint or coating falls of (OK;
8285 sets are getting old) and the parts do not like cleaning alcohol (it dissolves
the 'paint'; al other Lego seems solid and more indestructible. Is that
the 'normal' Metallic Silver Lego Quality or am I dealing with fake parts?
I have seen this on several different Ebay (Marktplaats) sets and even parts
bought on Bricklink
2) On all the sets I have seen (at least 4) the exhaust pipes had slits. Someone
told me they should be solid without slits. What is the deal about slits in the
exhaust pipes?

Are you talking about Chrome, not Metallic? If so, yes, they are "painted" chrome.
Usually have a light (bluish) gray underneath.

Once upon a time, long long ago, the first time a TLG rep ever posted officially
on BL (I believe his name was Brad) there was some mention about the manufacturing
processes for the Chrome parts. IIRC, the parts are actually tumbled in a drum
of the chrome-line finish. Applying the finish causes a small dimensional change
in the parts. To compensate for that, the unfinished parts are molded to very
slightly smaller size, such that the chrom'ed parts end up being the desired
size. The implication (if I remember this correctly) is that chromed parts are
a different mold number. But trying to sort that out on BL, would increase the
confusion even more than we have now.
Going way back in time, transparent parts used to have a different mold number
than opaque parts, and that was due to something about the injection or cooling.
They did it one way for opaque, but a different way for transparent.

There are colours with “drum lacquered” in their LEGO names:
298 Cool Silver, Drum Lacquered
299 Warm Gold, Drum Lacquered / Gold Metalized / Gold Lacquered (that one
is a mouthful )
300 Copper, Drum Lacquered
but they are matte.
The Chrome / mirror-like colours have “Metalized”:
309 Metalized Silver
310 Metalized Gold
http://www.ryanhowerter.net/colors.php
So, either the “Chrome/Metalized” don’t get their lacquer/coating in a drum,
or it’s another example of TLG’s naming consistency

Yes, different plastics (ABS vs PC), different behaviours.
Even colour can change the material, that’s why the Mixel/towball parts are only
in LBG and DBG.

Metallic silver (and chrome silver) parts are all painted, and yes the painting
can wear off to reveal the solid color underneath. It is normal. They are genuine
LEGO. However if there is significant wear or damage you should note it in your
listing.
was the original version of the technic pin joiner without slots.
On the catalog page you can see the note
Related Items:
This Item is similar in mold type to the following Item(s):
Part 62462 Technic, Pin Connector Round 2L with Slot (Pin Joiner Round)
It was revised to include the slots to make it easier to remove pins.
LEGO doesn't typically worry about the difference in their factories. So
until all the old ones are used up you can find either one packed into the sets
(and sometimes even 2 different versions packed into one copy of the set).
In the set inventory you can see the two versions listed as "alternate" items
meaning either one can be included for the set to be "complete".

| Wow, thanks for the quick and complete answer to my questions; really helpful!.
All clear to me now. I realise you have to mention the chrome/silver quality
in your listing. Unfortunately the seller I bought the set from didn't do
that. I had to replace all the Silver parts afterwards. It was some time ago
but I remember now I bought the couplers with slits since they were more affordable
than those without slits. I never realised the reason behind all this. Pity Lego
doesn't make 'solid' silver parts.

is the 'catalog page' and where can I find this? Looked on the Lego and
