| Hi there!
My 5yr old son was given an old Mindstorms set (likely missing lots of parts)
from 1999 that includes the original RCX 1.0 along with several motors.
The problem is that the cables that power the various motors by attaching onto
them were in such disrepair that the sleeves on the cables basically disintegrated
leaving the cables bare. They don't work as intended anymore but I'm
not sure how to find replacements on here...what are they actually called? I
would love to get this figured out for my son...He's obsessed with building,
motors, electronics and I want to grow this interest he has.
If it's too difficult to replace them, what other Lego options are there
for him to learn about motors and gears?
Thank you for any help!

If you'd rather not pay a couple dollars per cable, you can wrap each strand
of the motor (there are two strands) separately with electrical tape.
Thanks,

Those wires can be replaced, the brick ends come apart without much effort, wires
are not soldered, Wire from a small ac/dc power supply work perfectly for size.

Hi and welcome.
The easiest way to find replacement parts for a set is to look for said set in
the catalogue (by its number or name) and then look into its inventory for the
parts.
Here’s the list of Mindstorms RCX sets:
https://www.bricklink.com/catalogList.asp?catType=S&catString=59.631
That being said, the wires are not very cheap (as hinted by Yo_Yo_Flamingo) and
Mindstorms RCX has been abandonned a long time ago.
I’m not an expert in LEGO robotics but it seems LEGO makes the new “last and
best, promissed” robotic thingy every 3-5 years
The last one is SPIKE:

I sure could. I love parting out those sets, but the rubber coated ones are
terrible about disintegrating.

If you want authentic Lego replacements rather than the workarounds offered,
put 5306bc* into a search. The wires come in a lot of different lengths. They
sometimes had rubber wire coating that disintegrates and other times had plastic.
You might find a seller who says theirs are plastic. I always put that in the
comments, but I am out of plastic ones at the moment.

Thank you so much for the help! It looks like there are plenty listed on here,
so I'll check those out. It looks like I'll also need to look into the
newer sets. Thanks again!
