Hi everyone,

I have a few large boxes of used lego, all unsorted, and want to list it all.
I'm wondering if anyone has the best idea/way to sort it all, as I want to
be most efficient in my time and cost-effective.

Any suggestions from the store owners that sell mainly used parts?

Thanks,
H DOGG BRICKS

I've split parts into about 15 categories. I sort everything by these categories.

Then I sort by specific type. At the end I sort by color.

I've made my own software to calculate price automatically which gives me
minimal work when listing parts.

Sort by BrickLink category first. (Bricks, Tiles, Technic, etc) Then lay each
category out where you can see everything. Using the Catalog page as a reference,
add each part with all the colors you have of it one at a time.

https://www.bricklink.com/catalogList.asp?catType=P&catString=5

Store each category together so you can find your items, or use Remarks to label
where you are storing stuff.

It's a time-consuming process if you are not intimately familiar with LEGO
parts and our catalog, no doubt about it.

There's a page for difficult to identify parts:

https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=2479

Also, read through the thread for catalog identification, as someone has undoubtedly
asked about the part you can't find already.

Good luck,
Jen

Excellent advice, but I miss the first step:

When you have the big pile of unsorted parts in front of you, ask yourself: "What
is the biggest part or category of parts that I see many off?" For instance 'Panel
1x6x5' or 'Bricks 2x...'. Then pick those and put them in a pile
until you have most that can easily be seen. Repeat with the next biggest part
/ category. Repeat until done. Go from big to small. Go from broad category to
finer category or to specific parts. Split by color only in the very last round.

In every round you will spot parts that you ought to have picked in the previous
round. Pick those with your second hand if they are many, or put them in the
proper pile directly if there are few.

Sounds good!

I don't have a lot of room to sort, so I do a 'rough sort' first
into general categories then get more precise when I am listing stuff. I use
a Wine Rack - Beer Tray system in my LEGO area that holds everything while I
work. The little 1x stuff goes in the cups on the top.

I've always done bricks, plates, tiles, technic, slope, wedges, hinges, windscreens,
wheels, decorated, and any minifigure/accessory. Every thing else goes in a misc.
bin. Always worked well for me.

Everyone has given good advice.
If you intend to sort this lego for a store, do not sort by color.

Also, I recommend you sort for multiple parts at the same time. In other words,
do not try to first hunt for all the 2x4 bricks, and then hunt for all the 1x6
plates, etc.
You will just take too long trying to find the specific part, and for small and
unusual parts this is even tougher.

Instead, have a dozen bins or cups or something in front of you, i.e., one for
plates, one for tiles, one for round tiles, one for 1x2 bricksm and other general
categories. Then just grab anything out of the pile and put it in its place.
It is quicker to find the one correct bin/cup out of 12, then to find a 2x4 brick
in a pile of thousands.

I sort my Bulk used down into 6 categories, the largest of which ends up being
number 3. "Medium Parts" and that is then sorted further.

This is after all minifigure related pieces and well as non-lego have been removed.

C. Bulk
1. Tiny Parts – 1x1s (Plates AND Bricks)
2. Small Parts – 2x2s (Plates NOT Bricks)
3. Medium Parts
  a. Standard Bricks
b. Standard Plates – up to 6x8 and 4x10 sizes
c. Standard Tiles
d. Mod Plates
e. Mod Bricks
f. Technic brick / liftarm
g. Technic other
h. Vehicle tires / wheels
i. Vehicle other
j. Slopes
k. Rounds
l. Door Windows Supports

4. Large Parts
5. Baseplates – Large Bricks more than 2 studs wide and plates bigger than 6x8s
or 4x10s
6. Transparent
