| Almost on a daily basis I see the most incredible Sales in the discussion forum.
20, 30, sometimes even 80% off. Weren't theses prices to high to begin with?
Who are we fooling? Should't we stop this? Would like to hear you thoughts.

| Many aren’t true sales but there are genuine examples.
I hate all these false ones but I don’t think it’s really possible to do anything
about it and I don’t think anyone should try.
Everyone is free to price things at whatever price and therefore free to discount
as they like, it’s a free market

Yes I agree that people should be able to change/discount their items at any
time but when it comes to having the benefit of an 'On Sale' feature
hightlighted throughout a store there should be restrictions where it can only
be used and applied to items where the prices have remained unchanged for a set
period of time be that 2 months, 3 months etc..
After all a sale is only a sale if its cheaper than what the seller usually sells
their items at and its also only a sale if the pricing eventually returns to
its original price!
There are too many sellers with permanent, never ending so called sales along
with newbie sellers who are apparently having a huge sale right from the moment
they open shop which I think makes a bit of a mockery of having a sale feature.
In fact I would go as far as to say that BL should remove the feature until such
time that they can program and implement restrictions so that it can only be
applied under appropriate circumstances. By all means allow sellers to continue
with discounting their entire inventory but while there is so much abuse of the
so called sale I'd sooner we did away with misleading sales icons alongside
items which may/most probably not discounted!
With a bit of programing BL could restrict the length of time an item price needs
to remain unchanged before a sale discount can be applied to it. There also needs
to be a maximum period of time that the sale can be active before it returns
back to original price again whereby the items would need to continue to remain
unchanged for the same set period of time before they can go back on sale again.
If sellers expect their items to remain at a permanet lowered price then it is
not a sale and they'd need to manually set it at a price point of their choosing
rather than trying to claim its on sale
Also by activating a sale it could then automatically post a link in the forum
that way everyone knows they are being notified about an authentic sale. Any
other random forum post about sales could then be taken with a pinch of salt
or better still removed by admins to save us all a load of bother!

It can be a debbie downer or bernie bummer around here, not nearly as free
flowing and fun as it used be with all of the ups and downs that entailed
Now it's more down and that's the sad aspect (for me anyway)
If you can make a few people laugh, maybe lighten the mood too, it shouldn't
in anyway be viewed as detracting from the topic/point at hand. It doesn't
make it less salient, to the contrary. Just taking oneself less seriously, is
all.
|
Oh wait I seem to have located it again

Nice move
Our sales are discounted from 6 month average when item was listed, some are
out of sync as time goes by. Now they are synced again for true discount.

Some sales are genuine but many are not. If someone posts a fake sale multiple
times a week, week after week, there is a simple solution - least favourite the
store and also change your forum settings to ignore the threads started by the
sales forum spammers so you don't have to see them.

It's a free market. While I don't agree with what they're doing,
it is their choice and freedom to do so. They may suck in a few people, but most
of the bigger buyers are most likely going to see right through them and avoid
them. I'd say in the long run that permanent high "sales" hurt the seller
in the long run.

and it can still remain a free market where sellers can choose what they price
their items at but this is more about the fact that we allow sellers to utilize
the 'On Sale' feature on an almost permanent basis and without restricition
which I find unhelpful

I agree but it also hurts everyone else too because all these exagerated sale
claims overshadow worthwhile sales meaning decent buying/selling opportunities
get lost in all the noise to the point that nobody actually beleives the word

Well, in France, we have laws to differentiate “soldes” (sale) and “promotions”:
— limited in time (two 6 weeks periods in January and July, or when you go out
of business or
change owner…),
— items must have been at the original price for a month (and sold, not hidden
in the stocks),
— only way to sell at a loss.
We also have recent laws to limit “promotions” on some products (food…), e.g.
no more than 34% (or 3rd for free…).
And my feeling is that nobody acually believes in the word “SALE” anymore.

| Agree with this completely. I sometimes check the sale prices and they're
still higher than 6 month average.
I've never had a sale, I just list around the lowest currently available
and can barely keep up with my orders when I'm open. I can't imagine
"sales" drive that many purchases, although I often do see people excitedly responding
"order placed!" or "checking it out"... Weird.

I have the same feeling.
A suggestion maybe for the forum/community administrators: create a "Sales" channel
in the forum that is not in the "Marketplace" channel. Advertisement and sales
announcements should only be made there, so the "Marketplace" channel becomes
less polluted with those sales messages. Ads shouldn't be allowed anywhere,
except in the designated sales channel.
This still won't fix the "amazing sales" problem, but at least we won't
be confronted with them every 10 minutes. It will help keeping our focus on the
actual interesting forum messages.

I was a little confused about all the discussions about sales, because I rarely
see any sales posts in the forums... until I saw the above message, checked the
link, and noticed I had selected to hide the "Sales" topic... I don't recall
ever doing that, so it must've been yeeeeeeaaaaars ago (& I'm guessing
the ones I *did* see were posted to a different topic at the time)...

on any website or application ) and then you have only 10 topics…

themself, it would be helpful. I didn't think of going to my overall user
settings and there looking for forum preferences).
