| Hi, my son is building a custom star wars themed set with mostly light Light
Bluish Gray Brick. Before buying I was wondering if there was a better way to
buy, for example, I'm just about to by this for him from a seller:
296 pieces of Light Bluish Gray Brick 2 x 2 @ $0.10
144 pieces of Dark Bluish Gray Brick 2 x 4 @ $0.24
162 pieces of Light Bluish Gray Brick 2 x 8 @ $0.35
151 pieces of Light Bluish Gray Brick 2 x 3 @ $0.13
The reason for the odd numbers is that is the max quantity per type offered by
the seller. I found the least expensive 2x8 at the quantity I needed, and then
used the same seller for the other items.
Why I'm asking for advise, is that Walmart sells Lego brick sets with 1500
pieces for $40, but it doesn't have the colors we want. So it seems the per
piece price can go down to under 3 cents.
Is there a better approach to buying larger amounts of new bricks when you want
specific colors and sizes?

I would try lego bricks and pieces, and also try used parts on BL.

Probably not ... sellers on BrickLink typically acquire their new pieces by buying
sets and parting them out, so there is a markup for the time involved and a modest
profit. If you can find a set or sets with a majority of the pieces that you
want, then it would probably be more cost-effective to take that route.

That 40$ set will have all kinds of colors, and shapes.
PaB wall in Lego-stores are a great place, but they have a low variety.
Consider buying 3 orders of ~50 instead of 1 order with ~160, and see if the
extra shipping fee is covered by lower brick-prices. Consider sending an email,
maybe if you by an entire lot of say 150 or 200 pieces, you can get a better
price?
Consider buying a bunch of a single set that has a lot of pieces that you need:
if you find a small set with a lot of LBG bricks, it might be worth to buy a
lot of them, parting them out (and maybe selling the rest via bricklink?)
And then the design:
* maybe redesign a bit: put random color inside the moc (if there is any inside):
cheaper, easier to find, maybe you already have a bunch of them?
* Try using 2 1x4 bricks instead of 1 2x4 brick if those are cheaper. (same for
other sizes)
* Use 2x6 or 2x10 too, maybe those are cheaper (per stud)
