Hi everyone,

how do you pack your items?
Not in terms of bags or boxes, I mean how to pack them in terms of what you put
in the same bag or when you use a new bag?

We are in the process of getting more bigger orders so in order to optimize picking,
I want to pick your brains on how you package items together or how you would
want them packaged if you bought from a store.

Thanks

By color. Since placed order items are sorted by color by default and I couldn’t
find a way to change it, this is the way I like to pack and and receive orders
to make package contents verification easier as a buyer or as a seller.

It’s a joke, right?  Sorting by colour first is just insane.

One big bag with all the parts in the same colour means the buyer has to look
carefully at each and every part.
If the parts are in different colours, the buyer just need to sort by colour,
which is easy, and then they can check at a glance that all the parts in each
colour are the same and correct type.

If you want to reduce the number of bags, only mix very discernible parts (different
colours, different sizes, different types).  This way, when the buyer opens the
bag, it’s easier to separate/sort/count the parts.

Also, if you can, don’t mix “Left” and “Right” part together, otherwise the buyer
needs a 3D-oriented mind (which is not so frequent) or they needs to physicaly
rotate all the parts the same way to be sure.

And try not to mix New and Used either.

I can assure you it isn't a joke. Before learning how to change the order
item sorting here: https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1275977 I was trying
to match the Wanted List item sorting with the default order item sorting which
is by color. This helps with the sorting of the package contents into their respective
wanted lists.

But even then it wasn't completely a match because the transparent and metallic
colors are treated differently in both contexts: color names are sorted literally
in the order item lists, while colors are sorted by color category first in the
wanted list with the transparent and metallic color at the very end after the
regular colors.

After looking at the available choices in the order items sorting selection,
I'm not even sure it's possible to match one of the wanted list item
sorting since items aren't sorted by color after they are sorted by item
name or number, so it looks like I'm back to square one with sorting by
color.

One big bag with all the parts in the same colour means the buyer has to look
carefully at each and every part.

It's true, but at least they only have to open one bag at a time, instead
of having to open all the bags and then look carefully at each and every part.

If the parts are in different colours, the buyer just need to sort by colour,
which is easy, and then they can check at a glance that all the parts in each
colour are the same and correct type.

This is true if the seller sorted the package content by item, which isn't
always the case, and even then it couldn't match any wanted list sorting,
so that part of my workflow would be made more tedious.

If you want to reduce the number of bags, only mix very discernible parts (different
colours, different sizes, different types).  This way, when the buyer opens the
bag, it’s easier to separate/sort/count the parts.

So far I only had one big (200+ parts) order for parts and I still was able to
sort them into about 10 bags by color so I'm not sure this was an issue.

Also, if you can, don’t mix “Left” and “Right” part together, otherwise the buyer
needs a 3D-oriented mind (which is not so frequent) or they needs to physicaly
rotate all the parts the same way to be sure.

Now this is an advice I could really get behind.

And try not to mix New and Used either.

Yes! As a buyer I personally don't mind because they usually end up in the
same place, but it is important for sellers to separate them.

Er, no, you go bag by bag.  You don’t need to follow the list order, that’s what
checkboxes are for.

The order of the list isn’t much of a problem.  At least, I find it way easier
to search the list for the items I just counted (and then change/annotate the
list) than to strictly follow a list and having to search for the items in the
bags / on the table.

Simply put, to sort the contents of a mixed bag, I just pick and count the “most
visible” lot first.
Say you have a bag with 4 colours: you dump the bag on the table and you can
easily pick one colour, and quickly end up with 4 heaps.  It’s so simple you
can even have your cat do it for you… well, if that darn cat did anything else
than sleep and ask for food.
If you have a 1x1 plates with clips, vertical, horizontal, handles, double, all
the same colour in one bag… gahhhh!

My personal collection isn't sorted by color, but I do appreciate when orders
are sorted by color, it makes my life easier. Coincidentally, this is also how
I sort my outgoing orders, mainly used sets.

Er, no, you go bag by bag.  You don’t need to follow the list order, that’s what

Another feature I'm discovering, thank you, but it still is easier for me
to go down the list line by line in tandem with the wanted list filtered by the
order ID. Which means by color. It will still be useful to me for the transparent
and metallic colors that are sorted differently between order item list and wanted
lists.

Nope nope nope!!

You try finding a black 1x2 plate in a pile of black pieces and it will take
a while.

Try findig that same black 1x2 plate in a pile of plates and you'll find
it straight away!

In a large collection of 5,000+ parts, sure, but in individual orders of 400
or under items (all my orders placed so far), this is what has been the most
efficient for package contents verification and sorting into wanted lists. Any
other sorting requires me to first loosely sort by color.

Try findig that same black 1x2 plate in a pile of plates and you'll find
it straight away!

I have to disagree here, if you have any Black 1 x 3 or 1 x 4 plates in the
same pile, you will have a bad time as they will look like a 1 x 2 plate if they
are covered by larger plates.

I go roughly by item type. Ie, bricks with bricks, slopes with slopes, modified
plates with modified plates. That's mostly due to my storage method and how
I therefore pull items. I pack as I go. That will vary of course, depending on
quantity of a particular lot, quantity of the color of the lot, as well as new/used.
I also try to accommodate any special requests, should someone ask for something.

Personally I Generally Only use 2 bags (For small orders) 1 for new and 1 for
used. After over 2500 orders across several websites, I've never had a complaint
about it. Personally, when I buy lego I like to receive them in as few bags as
possible so I dont waste a lot of time trying to open them all. And generally,
I find most people (not everyone) like it with only a couple of bags for simplicity

I have been thinking a lot of reducing the amount of bags we use but I have been
concerned with how our customers would feel about receiving to many pieces in
each bag. Looking at your feed back, you have had a good amount of orders with
only positive reviews so your use of only 2 bags intrigues me because your feedbacks
show that your customers are fine with your packing methods. So with this in
mind, if you could answer a few questions I would really appreciate it.

1st question. When you say 2 bags for small orders, how many lots will you put
in each bag and how many pieces total for each bag.

2nd question. What are the max amount of lots / pieces will you put in one bag
before you start to use more bags.

3rd question. How many pieces does one lot need to be for you to only use one
bag for just that lot?

I hope these questions make sense. English IS my first language but sometimes
it does not appear that way.

Thanks in advance.

Jim.

Hi!

1. I Usually Use 2 bags (1 for new and 1 for used) if the order can be shipped
in either a 4x8 or 6.5x10 Inch Envelope which generally for most orders (not
all) is under 100 Bricks and usually less than 50 lots (often under 25).

2. For Larger orders that I ship parcels I use Some "party" Cups to hold the
bricks while pulling the order and once that cup is modestly full (about 75%)
It gets its own ziplock bag which generally fills the bag about halfway full
and contains usually no more than 150-200 bricks in 25-50 lots.

3. Usually I only put 1 item per bag if it is a bulky brick or if it has 100
or more of the brick however I do sometimes mix it with 1 other large quantity
lot if there is still lots of room in the bag.

I still try to bag glass pieces in their own bag to prevent scratching and all
Minifigures are bagged separately.

Hope this helps!

I guess most of your orders aren't being shipped domestically as Lettermail.
Keeping the padded envelope thickness under the 2.0 cm width pretty much guarantees
you need to use more smaller bags vs 1 or 2 large bags, and be very creative
in packing tightly (without stacking).

Canada Post removed Lettermail Internationally some years ago, but it still is
a money saver for Canadian shipping for small orders.

Most of my orders are domestic. I’ve personally never had a problem keeping
it under 2cm with only several bags. (I don’t stack) Besides Quebec’s for some
reason I’ve had it several times from Quebec that I’ve gotten lettermail returned
even if it’s under 2 can with a note saying to large for lettermail but when
I measure it at home it’s well under 2 cm in which case I reship it as parcel
to prevent delays.
Not quite sure what you mean that Canada post didn’t do letttermail internationally
(perhaps not overseas I don’t ship overseas) as most of my USA orders also go
lettermail.
-Jason

Canada Post had a class of service called Light packet which was similar to Lettermail
but for other than paper maximum width 2.0 cm and was much cheaper than Small
Packet.

They only have Small Packet and Tracked Packet now which don't have the 2.0
cm max width requirement, as well as Lettermail which is supposed to be for only
paper and doesn't require a customs form. Not sure how you can ship LEGO
as Lettermail since it requires a customs form.

Items such as large documents, oversize envelopes and heavy cards. Emphasis on
oversized envelopes. ive dropped lettemail like this off at the post office directly
in the past they weighed it measured it and accepted it without a problem and

Well you and your buyers have been lucky. You've saved yourselves a few cents
at the risk of having it returned or destroyed. Just because you haven't
had a problem yet doesn't mean that what you are doing is the best way of
doing it.

Not even sure it's ethical or strictly legal either.

way and it arrive in less than 4 weeks usually.

Well you and your buyers have been lucky. You've saved yourselves a few cents
at the risk of having it returned or destroyed. Just because you haven't
had a problem yet doesn't mean that what you are doing is the best way of
doing it.

I have seen two big other Canadian stores ship that way but seems those sent
to Germany may get returned.

Not even sure it's ethical or strictly legal either.

What I don't understand is why the prices of CanadaPost depends on the content
(as far as the size is correct and there is no insurance)?!

Hi!
That Is unfortunate. I thought I had read most of the website and not found any
problems with it. It is something I'm going to have to think about definitely.
I apologize for the previous messages. I've since deleted them.

I know, communication is not Canada Post's best attribute.

I had to go through the same process myself. In the end, I'm better off for
it.

Hi!
1 benefit is that with chit chats parcel prices would only go up a couple of
dollars and it would arrive way faster than Canada post lettermail. Plus it will
be fun to print more shipping labels. I will likely change things in the coming
weeks. Currently, I still have a half dozen other logistical things I need to
set up (for example I just set up taxes and am setting up QuickBooks etc) so
it will have to go to the back of the line.

Check what it says in the section "Postage rates":
"Use postage stamps to send your letters, cards and other lightweight papers
anywhere in the world."
This shipping option is clearly meant to be used for shipping paperwork and cards,
not Lego parts.

It shows the oversized lettermail as a current option for shipping to USA
Its description says

Yes. What this means is that the envelope _itself_ can be oversized. This does
not mean that you can ship Lego in an oversized envelope and use these stamps
rates.

The fact that you haven't had one return yet doesn't mean it is allowed.
It has simply never ran into a proper check by CP, because they are usually not
in the business of opening up customers' shipments.

Please check this document to get a clear description of what you can ship as
letter-post ("acceptable items") and what is not allowed ("unacceptable items"):

Jim.

Off topic, Jim... but I'd like to give a shoutout to you and your partner
for your very cool store slogan and announcements both. I like them.

I separate new and used, unless there's only like one new piece and it's
different than all the used. I keep minifigures separate. I currently have 7
size bags ranging from one inch to gallon that I use. I usually keep smaller
pieces separate from bigger ones so they don't get stuck inside. If someone
buys the same piece in larger quantities of both light gray and light bluish
gray I keep those separate. I also try to do that if someone buys similar variations
in the same color. Any piece with a quantity of over 100 gets its own bag.

Your shop is all NEW inventory, from what I saw from a quick look. If you are
storing your parts each in their own bag, I see no reason not to send them to
customers in the same bags -- especially when they buy out the entire lot.

If you have the parts already separated, it makes little sense to mix them back
up to send to your buyers just to save a few bags. If you buy your bags at wholesale
pricing, the cost per bag should be fractions of a penny, so the cost for bags
is minimal.

If your parts are stored loose in small drawers and you have to bag them when
picking orders, then there is nothing wrong with parts sharing bags. I do suggest
to limit the number of lots per bag to a small number, perhaps 4 or 5 lots per
bag.

Actually, it does make sense. It makes the picking time a lot faster believe
it or not. I had an order of about 50 lots or so a while bag that needed each
lot separately bagged. It took about twice as longer to put that order together
than a normal 50 lot order where I would use 2-3 bags. Plus, I don't know
if a customer with a 200+ lot order would appreciate 200 bags to open just to
get to his pieces.

Whenever and wherever possible save the buyer efforts, which includes the transaction's
back-end in receiving the order. Make transacting as painless as possible in
order of the buyer first then for yourself, a good general rule for sellers.

Unpopular opinion here, but I bag each lot separately. It doesn't matter
if there is one part in the lot or 1000, it goes in its own bag. I do this because
as a buyer, I hate receiving lots bagged together because it requires extra work
to verify the contents of the order and I usually end up separating the lots
anyway using my own bags. However, I totally understand sellers that combine
lots in one bag to save money on plastic bags and reduce plastic waste.

Same here unless order is very close to weight limit of shipping.

I normally put all smaller bags of new in a larger bag to keep them separate
from used.

First, separated by condition - used and new do not go together.

Minifigures, used and new, are all individually bagged. A minifigure that includes
a cape gets taped to a piece of cardboard. Some special parts will also be bagged
individually.

Bricks go with bricks, plates with plates, and tiles with tiles. I sometimes
bag different colors together when they are different shapes. For example, I'll
bag 12 white 1x1 plates together with 15 red 1x2 plates. Then I put the whole
order in a plastic bag to prevent any items falling out during handling and weighing
of the package.

This is beyond the scope of the question, but I typically include a piece of
cardboard as this gives the package some rigidity and makes for a nice surface
to affix a label to the envelope.

Also - sometimes slopes with tiles (like curved slopes without studs), slopes
with bricks, or slopes with slopes.

Depends on the order really, but generally i'll put up to 5 - 10 lots in
1 bag if it's small quantites of pieces, but if someones clearing me out
of all of 1 lot then that will just go straight in the box/envelope on it's
own.

New and used always stay separate.

I've also got a note on my terms asking if they have any packing requirements
then I would pack as requested. (i.e. all in 1 bag or each lot seperately).

Now that's very cool packaging!

Btw, if you keep you file width under 640 (600 works best for me for some reason)
you'll get much better results in your pics uploaded to the forum. Seems
it's kryptonite is width

As a buyer I wouldn't like your solution. It's a PITA to tear/cut/unwrap
shrink wrapped items to the parts you ordered. Open a ziplock bag and you have
all the part in your hand...

Thanks

I use the plastic bags from the sets, and I've never had to buy any plastic
this way. Both cheap AND green. Even/especially works well for mailbox shipments
that need to be under a certain width, because the plastic is quite sturdy.

Cut the bags through the middle, and you have two smaller bags, so you can split
up lots even more and distribute the contents evenly in an envelope to make a
good solid parcel.

I really recommend anyone to reuse the Lego bags, I'm doing it every day!

(Don't know how it's gonna work with the paper bags, I thought they would
have replaced them for 2021 but the Bonsai set still has plastic?)

Well, they need to change all their packing machines… and finish their plastic
bags stocks…

Exactly like you (your sealing machine won’t work on paper)

I'm actually just using tape (ok, I lied, so I did buy "plastic"), haven't
seen those paper bags yet, but I have some hope it's still going to work
on those...
