Anyone have a good list of random unexpectedly expensive parts? I buy lots of
used bulk lots from the 70s through today and *think* I'm pretty good at
picking out the weird expensive parts, but I've been surprised by some that
would seem common unless you know...

4150 in blue as just mentioned in the forum for example.

blue - https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=2566&name=Plant,%20Tree%20Palm%20Top&category=%5BPlant,%20Tree%5D#T=P&C=7

light bluish gray - https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=6942&name=Dish%205%20x%205&category=%5BDish%5D#T=P&C=86

light bluish gray - https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=3680&name=Turntable%202%20x%202%20Plate,%20Base&category=%5BTurntable%5D#T=P&C=86

light bluish gray - https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=73435c01&idColor=86#T=P&C=86

are some I'm always on the lookout for, someone have a master list of individual
parts over like $5? I've got extra space in my brain and need to commit
some more stuff to memory.

Man it's unfortunate when you buy a used set and find out a part like this

Replace the curly braces by square braces if you want to use the macro tags!

I'm not in this for the business part, but I feel like this is valuable market
research that I wouldn't freely give away if I was relying on it to make
a living as a BrickLink seller.

My gut tells me that 95% of Bricklink sellers would freely share this info.
This isn't like revealing your source for cheap bulk parts or sets or something.

The odds of this actually impacting your sales is so tiny, it's not even
worth thinking about.

Plus I would bet money that most people buying older lots with discontinued parts
are hobby sellers, not running a business.

I don't know the proportion of sellers making a living out of their store,
but I believe you're right that most sellers would enjoy sharing their finds,
but I don't expect anyone who put the time in to make it to share a painstakingly
compiled list of ridiculously expensive parts to maximize their selling efficiency.

meh whatever... just thought it would make for an interesting forum discussion.
Lego sales make up about 2% of my annual income, but account for about 20% of
my working time because it's so much more fun.

It definitely did with a few great examples in this thread! However, a compiled
list is another matter.

I'm not sure how this would affect anything business-wise... this information
is freely available to see on the site. Anybody looking for this piece or going
to sell the piece can see the value; or anybody browsing around for that matter.

Now where I get these parts, that I'm not going to reveal.

The information if freely available, but the aggregation isn't. As such,
it requires quite a bit of legwork to find the juicy deals, and this legwork
is time spent which is a cost for someone trying to make a living out of their
BL store.

I make a living off of our bricklink store, and I see no danger in this information.
A bunch of people knowing what pieces are rare and expensive aren't suddenly
going to make them suddenly cheap and common.

I don't go making a list, but when I list something that sells for more than
$5 I am wonderfully surprised. It's like mining gold. When you find the nugget
once you want to buy more used lots just to find another one.

I'm not sure how this would affect anything business-wise... this information
is freely available to see on the site. Anybody looking for this piece or going
to sell the piece can see the value; or anybody browsing around for that matter.

Now where I get these parts, that I'm not going to reveal.

You can share it with me, we are like twinbrothers, just look at our names.

Ok, I get them from... someplace else.

Miles away from where I got them I guess.

That’s an interesting one. I just sold this set and don’t think I had any in
it. I see it’s only listed as an alternate. The part is still less than $1 though
so probably not a deal breaker for buyers I’m guessing. I just went off the regular
part out list and don’t think this was in it. I think a few went in my $4 per
pound bulk boxes, but not worth fishing through at that price.

An easy way to find some would be to find some of the older sets that you know
are expensive and load up the inventory of each one in Brickstore and set the
part prices to the average 6 month sales average for used and you can find a
lot of good expensive parts that way.

You'd better have a good memory, there are over 2200 parts (which have sold
more than once in the last six months) with a Used value over $5.

Wow to the star wars hatch. I've got that ship for sale, but thinking maybe
I should just sell the hatch and the figs and replace the hatch with a similar
one. Would probably make the same as what I'm asking for and get to keep
the ship. :-0
