Hey Everyone,

I read through, "4150 in blue why so high?": https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1266170
and everything in there makes sense i.e. not many sets made that contain that
part, and a limited quantity per set, and the sets are discontinued.

However, while seemingly high for what it is e.g. $4-5, the price has been fairly
stable over the last 6 months. I came across another piece: https://www.bricklink.com/catalogPG.asp?P=13269&ColorID=85
which has those same features, except 6 months ago, the average sale price was
about $1 but this month it's over $11. Even if taking out the $24 and even
$14 outliers, it's still probably pushing $10. Does anyone know why this
piece is all of a sudden in demand for a high price?

As a new store owner I've been using the 6 month quantity average when pricing
inventory and most of the time it seems reasonable, but in this case if I did
that, I'd likely be losing out on a couple of dollars, perhaps more considering
in the US the cheapest piece is $12. I totally understand someone would have
to buy it from my store in order to actually materialize the value. Thanks for
any insight.

There may be a valid reason I don't know about (popular MOC, etc), but I'm
guessing it goes something like this: Available pieces all got sold at $1-$2
range, remaining pieces were at a higher range, some sold, which skewed the current
data, new listings were put at similar high prices to current remaining high
price listings, and voila, there is now a new "average price". And it will stay
like that until enough people are willing to undercut the price to get the sale.

One thing I've noticed is that for the most part, people are willing to pay
a lot more money for pieces than the 6-month average or most listing prices.
They generally won't if they don't have to, of course, but considering
the cost of shipping is often higher than the cost of pieces, doubling or tripling
the cost of individual pieces often makes no difference to the buyer, it's
large inventories that make the sale. There are lots of people on this site with
(apparently) plenty of disposable income, who don't care too much about a
few dollars here or there if they can get it one order (or get it at all, if
an inflated price is the only option).

Moral of the story is I think you should definitely take the 6-month average
with a grain of salt. If you have a decent-enough inventory, you will still get
plenty of sales at prices higher than the average. But as you noticed, it's
worth checking your listings every once in a while to see if you can push your
prices up a little to a more "true" market value (what people are actually willing
to pay).

Indeed, thanks for the thoughtful response. I have been working on building up
my inventory since reading through the forums and my limited experience trying
to complete sets via wanted lists definitely makes it seem like a big factor
is on whether one makes a purchase is how many of the pieces can be purchased
from a single store. And as you mentioned, price does play a part but certainly
not a few cents here or there, even if it does add up with enough pieces.

I have noticed a few times where I'll find let's say, 40 lots from one
shop and 38 from another yet the total price can differ by tens of dollars. When
I look at the proposed cart in detail I'll see a couple of pieces at what
seem like ridiculous prices, so there's a limit of course as to what an individual
will just deal with.

There have been a few other instances where I've been surprised in the opposite
direction i.e. I come across a piece that seems cool and unique only to find
that it's "worthless" from a price guide point of view, so I am still working
on developing my intuition for these things.

It was only produced in 2 sets that were released 6 years ago.

Unless lego release it in another set then the price is only ever going to go
in one direction.

It's frequently used to build tanks.

On interesting, thanks for the heads up. I wonder if a new MOC tank has become
popular.

Yup, but I've come across other parts like that which no one seems to care
about and in this particular case, no one seemed to care about it 6 months ago.
