| I'm just wondering if anyone can give me any advice if they've had a
similar problem.
A few years ago I bought a box of very old lego and I'm currently trying
to split it into sets to sell on Bricklink. Most of the sets are much older than
me, so I don't know any of them very well.
Basically it's a medium sized box of random parts from someone's collection,
the problem is that I'm really struggling to form incomplete sets from the
parts, as it seems that there is no more than 50% of any set.
For example I have a boat, which I believe is from set 314 (1976) because of
the stickers attached, but not many of the other pieces.
I also have one of the big red boat pieces from set 7244 (2005) and the sticker
sheet, but not many other pieces.
I also have lots of pirate minfigs, some of which I think have come from set
6258 (1992), but I'm really struggling to tell what set these come from as
lots of the pirates are present in multiple sets.
What I'm trying to ask is, does anyone have any experience with a similar
issue and if so do you think it would be better for me to continue trying to
split the box into sets, or should I sell the pieces all together in one big
bundle? Has anyone got tips for sorting used lego into sets?
Any advice is really appreciated, and I can provide photos if anyone is interested?

| Why not list them as parts? Used parts definitely do sell on BrickLink - and
you'll get a better price for them listed individually than as a bundle.
Definitely list the minifigs individually as well.

| Selling sets and selling parts isn't the same job, it doesn't require
the same organization. I currently have several sets for sale each in their own
bag (or on my shelves), but only about a hundreds used part lots, which I keep
in exactly three ziploc bags. If I wanted to start selling more parts, I would
have to come up with a whole different sorting system to separate the parts for
sale and the parts I keep for future builds.

All true, but the OP's store already has parts listed for sale.
At the very least it's a good idea, if completing the sets is difficult,
to separate out the minifigs before trying to sell the parts in one batch.

| I agree, for the sets I discarded that had minifigs, I put them for sale individually
as well. No luck for my current bin, almost devoid of any minifig.

All true, but the OP's store already has parts listed for sale.

| If you know you're missing a lot of parts (especially the more rare parts),
it would not make any sense to try to acquire the missing pieces unless you frequently
buy lots from a similar era and don't mind holding onto them and eventually
completing. That being said, it's a lot more work and the sets themselves
will sell slower than individual pieces and figs.
I'd strongly recommend just listing figs and rare parts separately (identifying
the likely sets makes this a lot easier).

| If you're missing a lot, its better to sell the parts. When listing them,
be sure to write in the comments what Era they are from. There are buyers looking
for older bricks in particular.

| I had the same issue with the previous LEGO bin I purchased off Craigslist. What
I did is start a ziploc bag for most of the identified sets, sort the parts between
them using wanted lists to record how many of each part I have.
Once I was done, I checked how expensive it would be to complete each set, and
I discarded any set that would have been almost as or more expensive to complete
than buy Used. From 20 sets initially, it boiled down to just 8.
I've put the stickered parts of the discarded sets for sale since I knew
I wouldn't complete these sets. I've kept the remaining parts for the
sets I identified in the current bin, where I have had way more luck, with completion
rates around 80% including parts I took from the previous bins I sorted.

| The only way you can know what set a common part comes from is if it's assembled
with at least 2 other parts (see https://www.bricklink.com/catalogIn.asp?viewMulti=Y
). My current LEGO bin contained several small assemblies I've been able
to attribute to specific sets, mostly ones I'd already identified. It helped
with the process of sorting parts between sets.

| Thanks for all the replies everyone, I really appreciate all of the help.
If I was to sell the parts individually, is there an easy way to tell what era
the bricks are from, or is it best to give a rough guess? As I mentioned in the
first post almost all of the bricks are older than me, so I'm not so confident
that I'll be able to distinguish the eras by myself.
Also is there a way to find a fair price for older pieces, since the 6 month
sale average will be mostly newer bricks, or should I try to come up with prices
myself?
