Over the last few years, the number of people wanting photos has gone up sharply.
I do not send out photos. This morning, a new member (0 FB, eastern Europe) asked
me for photos of a set. I sent them my standard reply that pointed them to my
Terms page, where it is quite clear that I do not accept cross-border PayPal.
Normally, that concludes it, as the person presumably wanted to buy the set.
Instead, I got this response …

I've read them carefully few times, I'm not asking to sell it, I'm asking to send me photos of it, are photos blocked by your paypal too?

So, now I see that these people want photos for reasons other than actually buying
the set.

Perhaps I should establish a rate card for selling photos … $50 for the first
photo, and $20 for each additional, watermarked and not including reproduction
rights.

Odd, why would someone want photos of your set? If they were selling the same
set, it defeats the purpose of having photos of someone else's set.

Unless, of course, they want to sell a 20 year old set that they don't even
own.

If you are a scammer trying to get people to pay for something you don't
have, it helps to present pictures of the imaginary item. Copying some pic off
the webs won't work, as you can easily find the original picture with a google
image search. So fresh pics of expensive items are in demand...

Ah, ok, might be time for me to start using watermarks.

Sometimes they even ask if you can add their username to the photo on a piece
of paper, the reason given "so they know you are genuine and actually have the
item". Because they are not going to scam once they have an unsearchable image
with their own username on it, are they ... ?

I had someone ask me to scan a sticker sheet I am selling so he can make his
own "custom" sticker sheet since mine was too expensive.

Oh boy! I can spend my time and energy so you can definitely never buy anything
from me?! What a deal!

I'd say sure, then charge them $1,000,000 - after all, your time and materials
are worth something, and since you'd likely get booted, you have to recover
that loss of income.

What I also noticed is the more service you give to a potential buyer, here on
BL when providing pictures but also on the Dutch marketplace, the less chance
a deal can be made. And it isn’t the problem of bad pictures or condition...
The problem is when you quite doing this there is always the feeling you might
lose an potential order.

I have established a new work method to these requests.

I take the picture/s and ad them to the listing in my store. Then a short message
to answer the request: “Thank you for visiting my store, I have updated the listing
with some pictures.”

In that way I do meet the request from my customer, but I’m also protected from
the fact that he/she will never buy it. The result is either a sale or a better
shopping experience for the next buyer to come.

Good move, because that would likely cause them to be indexed via Google Image
search, which cancels out the appeal of fresh never before seen (or indexed)
images.

I wonder if this could be a drop shipper. They have a store (maybe not that
user) that has sold the same item to someone in the US and they are hunting for
one to purchase and have you ship to their customer.

I have had a few of these and I always put the order sheet in the package so
they know where it really came from.

I started asking for photos after spending more than I should on 2 sets from
the Netherlands because they were listed as "Excellent condition". Turns out
they were all yellowed and sun damaged. I could have spent way less if I has
just bought the same sets from a different seller in fair condition. I ended
up having to replace a ton of parts.

Might be more work for a seller but from a buyer's perspective, photos are
a must. If a seller won't provide photos, I won't buy from them.

I need to see if there's yellowing, if sails are in good condition, if stickers
are pealing or if windshields are still transparent.

For most of us, buyers and sellers, LEGO is a great hobby. Nonetheless, I have
projects where the condition of parts and such was a priority and have communicated
that to sellers whose terms permit such queries, or don't address the subject.
If the seller has prohibitive policies, or responses, I look elsewhere for those
elements, without prejudice.

So, I agree, if the buyer is a collector or has particular needs, they should
ask for additional information to ensure a solid and trouble-free transaction.

I also appreciate that some sellers don't have the equipment, or do this
in their limited spare time.

Sellers who don't have the means to respond to the arduous task of responding
to such requests, should state their policy in "Terms", and buyers should be
understanding of the seller's limitations.

I don't see the need for a store to have a policy on providing images to
buyers. I prefer common sense on a case by case basis. If someone asks for a
photo of something reasonably scarce that is expensive, I'd do it. If someone
else asks for photos of common penny parts, I'd ignore it. If they make multiple
requests without buying, I'd ignore them. If they ask for strange things,
I'd ignore them.
