as per conversation here:-

https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1260360

I beleive the most up-to-date and relevant Design I.D should always be updated
to the most prominent spot because these references appear in the order picking
list and I for one use those Design I.D's for locating picking parts but
also having the most current
Design I.D's diplayed will be more relevant and make more sense to newer
users who shop here.

Part No: 43753 Name: Minifigure, Hair Swept Back Tousled
*
43753 Minifigure, Hair Swept Back Tousled
Parts: Minifigure, Hair

for instance this part 43753 should be switched to the Alternate item spot
as it does'nt even register on the Lego site anymore whereas the most current/relevant
reference for this part is 61183

Likewise where parts like these older viking helmets have alternate Design I.D's
depending on colour i.e 53708 for Speckled Black/Silver and 54199 for Gold

Part No: x1533 Name: Minifigure, Headgear Helmet Viking with Side Holes
*
x1533 Minifigure, Headgear Helmet Viking with Side Holes
Parts: Minifigure, Headgear

Please can we display the most commonly reccuring Design I.D in the prominent
spot which in the case of these viking helemts is the Speckled Black/Silver 53708
which appears
in the most sets and caters for a wider range of minifigs

I think we shouldn't be changing IDs each time the mold is updated it could
be a big mess...

What I believe is that once Bricklink knows a Design ID for a part, the earlies
one should stay as the ID, so the invented IDs from other platforms x* or from
BL bb* should be updated once this information is known.

I don't see it as becoming messy as its not as if I expect the admins to
have to go through and change them all in one go but only as and when they get
a request to update besides most molds have only changed once or twice in
their entire lifetime and so its not as if they need to be updated every month
or year or anything like that?

The parts I've mentioned today could be updated now and others whenever someone
specifically notices the out of date reference and decides to request the change!

What I believe is that once Bricklink knows a Design ID for a part, the earlies

BL bb* should be updated once this information is known.

But the earliest design I.D is the least relevant surely when a company/organisation
updates their references those marketplaces and sellers should follow suit. I
don't see the logic of displaying old references in the prominent spot. Bricklink
references need to be current and cater for the market as it is today rather
than holding onto old references which I might add would still be viewable, its
just I don't think they should be taking the primary spot as they ar eno
longer the relevant and primary reference?

Disagree majorly here. We put the main I.D. for just about every piece on our
storage bins and bags since that is what is shown on the order page. If they
keep getting updated to a newer one, that will mess us up majorly. It's already
happened on a couple pieces and isn't fun at all.

As I said I also store my stock by I.D too but I'm willing to accept updating
my storage bins as and when necessary as a design I.D for an individual mold
does'nt change that often anyway and its a small inconveneice for the greater
good of keeping BL references up-to-date and relevant to new and existing shoppers
either way if you want to keep using the old references you can always use the
remarks field? is'nt that what its there for?

I use the remarks field for other information. And as long as the new ID's
are being set as alternate item numbers, I see no problem with the way it is.
We're staying up to date and not messing everyone up at the same time. In
fact, I'd say the oldest number should be the main number as that is the
original number created with the piece.

This request was not approved, primarily for the following three reasons:

1. We have no way to determine the most current part number.
2. The site would likely get angry if we regularly changed item numbers.
3. Members would likely get angry, too.

Not intending to anger others, but seeking not to anger others is not an empirical
approach to finding solutions we seek

This request was not approved, primarily for the following three reasons:

1. We have no way to determine the most current part number.

For some parts that may very well be true but we really are talking about a small
minority of parts as for most parts any newly updated Design I.D is very clear
and obvious either which way just because we can’t ensure every part is displaying
the most current Design I.D doesn't mean we shouldn't try to attempt
to update and fix what is relevant to today wherever possible?

Besides we have some parts using the most up to date Design I.D and some using
the oldest I.D and then others not even using an official design I.D and so we
should at least try to make things a little more consistent starting with shifting
the peeron x numbers to secondary spots so that an official design I.D always
holds primary spot

I also don’t even see my post as a suggestion but rather something that seems
like a logical step to take. Having old peeron references appearing on an order
picking list instead of relevant official design I.Ds is not useful or helpful
to anyone and what we’re talking about here is some short term disruption for
a long term fix?

  2. The site would likely get angry if we regularly changed item numbers.
3. Members would likely get angry, too.

Since when has angering a few users prevented you from carrying out catalog changes?
If you followed that approach I’m sure you wouldn't be able to progress forward
with anything at all? also If we can disrupt a load of people by changing a colour
from Flesh to Nougat for no obvious reason other than several peoples personal
preference then surely we can move a few outdated peeron references for the long
term benefit of the catalog?

It is not us that you need to convince, because I have wanted this for a long
time. It is the site you need to convince.

You've been discarded.

What a strange term to use when choosing not to implement an idea. What else
is commonly discarded? Trash, waste or refuse comes to mind

Always felt there are better terms that could be use for Catalog Requests
refusals

No. The request was discarded. I would find it exceedingly difficult to discard
the person of infinibrix due to multiple limiting factors, one of which is the
complete lack of desire on my part.

Expressed lack of desire on your part or not, the man makes an earnest suggestion
and it's "discarded" out of hand on the basis that it's perceived to
anger some?

seeking not to anger others is not an empirical approach to finding solutions we seek

Public sentiment must be taken into account when considering any change.

"Public?" In this particular context, what does that mean? Because in this instance,
it's conveyed as the central reason for being "taken into account"

On second thought, don't bother with any predictable platitude, consider
it a rhetorical question. Will it on.

btw, this salient bit was left out of my response:

"What a strange term to use when choosing not to implement an idea. What else
is commonly discarded? Trash, waste or refuse comes to mind

Always felt there are better terms that could be use for Catalog Requests
refusals"

Maybe it's just semantics... The term "Discarded" is disrespectful to new
ideas and efforts, imho
