| Dear BrickLink members,
Since we announced the BrickLink Designer Program back in December 2020, we have been very busy behind the scenes. Today, we are so happy to finally be ready to kick off the program and to start sharing with all of you.
The BrickLink Designer Program: 2021 Invitational is officially kicked off!
What has happened since December?
A total of 31 designs have been selected, and the LEGO Ideas 10K Club designers have been onboarded to the program.
Right now, the designers are working on the digital render of their projects, revising their designs to meet the program requirements in order to pass test building before May 31st.

| For those that were waiting until 1st June to check back in I noticed today that
Robenanne has withdrawn from the Designer Program and (I have assumed the pronoun)
her 3 designs have been archived.
Sadly that means I won’t be buying the dive shop. Was gonna be a gift for a dive
shop owning friend.
Shame.

I am so excited for this round! At least 4-5 that I'm 100% picking up. My
only gripe/comment from the 1st round was the method of shipping used because
it was some kind of bizarre Fedex international one where you couldn't track
it or have any clue where in the world it was stuck, and for many it was stuck
for weeks/months with no updates. Hopefully that gets resolved for this round
though!

According to the FAQ page: "The designer sets will be manufactured in Europe
and most likely to be shipped directly from Europe, too. However, we’re working
to arrange another US-based distribution center for US customers. We will update
the information before the crowdfunding begins."

There’s the “Crowdfunding” step, so only those that get enough backing will be
produced.

| Oh in the FAQ so they say the first 13 projects to successfully be crowdfunded
(and in another part of the FAQ, they state 3000 units orders is considered successful).
And they each will have a limit of 5000 produced.

| In what form will the instructions be made available? The FAQ says there won't
be physical ones, which is already unfortunate, but it sounds like they'll
only be available on mobile...? And only for the owners? What does that mean?
I really hope there'll at least be PDFs, for preservation, potential
selling, etc.

| I'm disapointed that there won't be printed instructions. I hope that
at least the instructions will be in pdf to still be able to read them in a few
years.
Does the lack of printed instructions also means that there won't be beautiful
packages?

| Wow! What a selection of sets. I could only easily eliminate 7 that I wouldn't
want, and possibly the 3 Fishing Village ones as well, so that still leaves 21
to 24 sets I'll likely want to crowdfund. Gonna break the bank on this.
I'm quite surprised that TLG/Bricklink picked so many large sets. I thought
for sure that half the sets would be smaller or medium-sized, like the last
round of voting.
Also, given that I spent hundreds Bricklinking that Construction Modular years
ago, I'm a little sad that it might be mass-produced. My copy won't be
as special! I also reverse-engineered and Bricklinked Pursuit of Flight, but
it's so brilliant that everyone should own one. I was shocked it wasn't
picked for production by Lego Ideas in the first place. Maybe because JKBrickworks
have already had 2 produced -- they're the best MOC designers out there,
IMO.

I am disappointed in two things:
1. That you only ship to 30 countries, mine not included.
2. That you will not publish the building instructions, which would have been
a consolation for people who aren't allowed to buy them.

Lego indeed willingly creating a new market and possible incredible prices for
those who are not listed. It is a very big disappointment, and quite sad that
it is done this way.
The world is already divided, and Lego doing their part to keep that going. Shame
on you Lego.

Yep. And it takes forever to reload. And then you can see a the text.
And the images take forever to load… and when they are almost there, they timeout
and you can’t see them anymore.
I guess the page is under heavy load as several fan sites have already announced
the program.

| Please fix the page.
It is really messy.
When, or better if it loads it is really huge - the page itself is 12MB.
And all the additional images add up to whooping 60MB when finished ... after
almost 2 minutes. Compression on or not. It is just not fit for this load.
If this is not optimized until the crowdfunding starts it will be a riot.
The load that happened now is just lite version what will happen when the crowd
will try to secure their favorite MOC, just ask LEGO how it goes on their Shop@Home
on launch day...

| Hi Marvin,
I hope you will use the time given to make some lean and mean page that will
run rounds around the Zeppelin sized corporate system that is used at Shop@Home.
It is a once in a lifetime chance to show LEGO a launch can end up other than
messed up
Good luck.

Our engineers have identified the issue and currently working on to fix it. I'm

| The main page itself is now substantially smaller (10+M to 50k ).
But the use of PNGs and low/no compression JPGs is still there. Plus the page
loads 2 pictures per project. Which totals to like 50MB. Each of the Bionicle
pics is like 2MB.
Still takes tens of seconds to load.

| thanks,
it made me boot up the workstation and there it takes just bit more than 10 seconds.
Compared to 3-4x more on the laptop with integrated GPU and probably slower WiFi
it is also somehow HW related.
Yet the 10 seconds match the measured speed I have to US servers - about 50mbit
for me.
The 50MB wasted in eclectic mix of pictures of different formats and quality
(PNG,lossless JPEG) and sizes (up to 2000x1500) when the max displayed size in
index is something like 500x300 can't be called an optimization. A decent
picture browser app allows to fix it by running a 5 minute batch job (resize,
normalize format), that is including set up.

| Hi Russell
the page can be accessed and it loads.
But it is still highly inefficient, at least on PC, as the code loads hi-res
images on the project index page.
See stats from a fresh run in the attached screenshot. There is still ~50MB worth
of images loaded when about 1/10th-1/20th of that would suffice considering the
resolution needed for that page.
The result is that even on a relatively fine connection of ~50mbit and hi-spec
machine the page loads in like 10 seconds. It could have been like 1 second at
most with not drop in the perceived quality, if it would be optimized.

| can this FAQ topic be further explained ?
Q: How many sets can I pre-order?
A: There is no restriction on the number of pre-orders unless products are sold
out.
Does that mean that if a set reaches 5000 (aka sells out) the quantity in each
pre-order can be changed to lower one ?
Like spreading the quantity to as many people as possible...

| I could certainly be interested in a modular LEGO store or construction site,
but they don't really work. The LEGO store is way off scale with doors twice
as tall as a minifig and the construction site isn't a modular at all.

| Now that the page is finally loading... there are a lot of beautiful sets, but
I'm kind of disappointed that over half of them are buildings. I'm more
partial to vehicles, but I can see how it would be harder to get vehicle ideas
that are not IP. Still, would be nice to see more variety.

| I can finally see the sets, and I have to say that I am quite disappointed and
underwhelmed. I am most partial to space and vehicle sets, and the number of
those in this selection is extremely thin (one boat that is very nice and one
space set that is pretty bland). Almost every project is some type of building
or location which are my least favorite types of constructions. Ah well, I guess
I get to save my money for other things rather than this. Good luck to everyone
who got a design picked.

Can someone fill me in on how this works? Is everything being made, and you'll
just receive what you crowdfund towards, or do only ones that receive a certain
amount of crowdfunding get made, and you receive it if you were one of the crowdfunders
for that set/project?
Thanks, I can't wait to get some of these!!

I'm kinda stressed out that it's a race to 13 approved projects. If it's
anything like last time, the 13 who get crowdfunded will all max out at 5,000.
I'm just really happy that bricklink staffers don't have to do the parting
and packing this time. They have too much on their plate already. I'm assuming
that the "Europe" reference means that LEGO will be handling that large and time
consuming aspect.
Also, I'm not surprised, but very disappointed that instructions will only
be digital. Digital instructions are fine for kids, but not for 18+ sets that
we will be paying a premium price for.

I can understand the want for physical instructions, but I've found myself
more and more (even with the bigger sets) using the online instructions from
lego.com. This give me more working space on my table so that I don't have
a huge binder book of instructions to worry about. No I have a desktop, so it's
only a monitor on the table top, but can easily understand if you are using a
table or laptop where this wouldn't work as well.

I'm sure most people can live with digital instructions, but what concerns
me is them saying that only the owners will have access to those instructions,
as if they'll be linked to your BrickLink account or something, and other
people can't access them at all. That would be a problem in my opinion, border
lining on a deal breaker, because those instructions might then just disappear
some day.

This answer is very... cryptic?
It could be interpreted this way: The secondhand market has been taken into consideration
and is not important to us.
Or, the secondhand market has been taken into consideration and so the instructions
will not be tied to the initial buyer.
Can you clarify?
Also, will the instructions be tied to an app or more of a password protected
document?

| By that logic so is Castle, Western, City, Bionicle and Space. So how come all
the others made it but the pirate sets got excluded?

First and foremost, my answer wasn’t “LEGO Pirates is LEGO IP therefore
it wasn’t selected,” it was “you’re wrong when you say LEGO Pirates doesn’t belong
to any IP, it’s LEGO’s IP.”
Then, I don’t make the rules, I don’t even know them in details, and I don’t
apply the rules, I don’t know which rules applied or not here, but:
1. The castle, western, city and space (no capitals) sets don’t use iconic designs
or decors (no classic space logo, no Crusaders or Falcon flag, no LG+Blue+Trans-Yellow
or White+Blue+Trans-Blue palette…), so they don’t use LEGO’s IP.
2. The Bionicle set is a tribute to Bionicle, not a revival of Bionicle. It
“only” uses names/trademarks, not designs.
3. LEGO Pirates was already revived with Pirates of Barracuda Bay, so the Pirates
IP is now (very) live.
That makes LEGO Pirates sets different from the other sets.

It feels like a snub to millions of AFOLs, especially to those of us in the region

| Hi guys,
have you noticed that two BDP projects are no longer accessible? The links lead
to nothing.

Meet the LEGO Ideas 10K Club Projects in pre-production
Visit the BrickLink Designer Program landing page for your chance to see all the projects that have been entered into the program, and to follow the progress of your favorite designs from digital modeling to test building and ready for production.
Time to start the count down!
On the landing page, you can find the overall timeline for the program as well as an FAQ page that can hopefully assist you with answers to your questions. The BrickLink team will also be available to answer your questions below this post.

| Hi Brick-Team,
in the beginnung of the BDP you announced that all non-funded sets will have
a chance to sell the instructions.

"What will happen to the designs that don't reach the crowdfunding goal or
are not among the 13 quickest to hit their goal?
The remaining projects in the crowdfunding phase that don't become BrickLink
Designer Program sets will be sold as digital Building Instructions only, so
that you can still have an opportunity to find your own bricks to build them."
"How are fan creators compensated for their ideas?
Fan designers will receive a 10% royalty fee for BrickLink Designer Program sets,
while designers of Digital Building Instructions will receive a 75% royalty fee."
Instead of this LEGO customer service replied that there will be no offering
of Digital Building Instructions.
So, what will Bricklink do? Do we see a final Round where all the Digital Instruction
are offered for sale?

Interesting point made.
Even more interesting what the reply is going to be.
I would be interested in some marvelously created designs!

| Dear AngryPawn2020,
You are correct that our intentions were to enable the selling of building instructions
for the projects that did not make it to production, however new marketplace
rules are causing some issues in this regard and currently we are looking in
to alternative options for enabling the selling of instructions.
Hopefully we will have a solution to this, however at this point we are not able
to make any promises with regards to how and when this will be possible.
