⇒ Auto-select gives $56 total from 4 different stores.

🤷‍♂️

It could be that once you hit step 2, you were below the minimum buy/minimum
lot average for the four stores initially selected in step 1. That's the
only way I can really make sense of it.

It's entirely possible.

There are other specific choices, like picking very expensive parts in the same
store, that can be identified and manually corrected by setting maximum part
price or removing them from a store's cart, but this kind of counter-intuitive
results can't easily be averted, including because they depend on ever-shifting
inventories.
