I had this set when it was brand new, and I'm pretty certain that the Expert
Builder version sold in the United States was called the "Auto Chassis"
and not "Car Chassis". It's also identified as such in the 1982 Dealer Catalog
for the USA: https://images.brickset.com/library/Catalogues/c82usdc.pdf

Does anyone else of a certain *ahem* age remember what it was sold as back then?

Is there a reason BL settled on calling it the "Car Chassis" (which I think is
the name it was sold under in the UK)?

I bought and sold one a couple of years ago. I think it was named Car Chassis
on the box. NO version

It was definitely the "Car Chassis" here in the UK; my best friend had it and
I fell in love with Technic Lego there and then. It was an awesome set (BITD).

If it was called "Auto Chassis", somebody in the UK would ask for a reason
BL settled on calling it the "Auto Chassis" (which is the name it was
sold under in the USA)

P.S. these sets have various names in different countries. BL can add all those
names as a note.

It is called Car Chassis in the UK, I have just checked my one which I have had
since new, the pictures are from a small booklet included in the box showing
all the technic sets from that year.
I think that is the first time I have ever opened the booklet. I do remember
that a large part of the middle of the instructions had been stapled in back
to front so I got something like step 45 after 16!

In the Scandinavian medium Technic catalog from 1984 it is called 'Auto-chassis'
in the Danish text. The Swedish text says 'Bilchassi' and the Finnish
text simply states 'Auto'.

In the German - French- Italian medium Technic catalog from 1986 it is called
'Auto-chassis' in the German text, 'La voiture' in the French
text and 'Auto chassis' in the Italian text.
