I don't know if I can give a partial refund through the BL option or not.

Managed to save someone a reasonable amount on shipping, it was £2.55 and I'd
like to refund it, is it working and does it allow partial refunds, how does
it work ?

I know BL, unlike PayPal, doesn't charge fees on shipping but is it designed
to refund any amount for whatever reason ?

In the detail of the order, you can click on Issue Refund and there you can do
a partial refund. You will then also see the word "partial" in the column refund
of the Orders Received page. I have done a partial refund a few days ago like
this.

I appreciate the empirical input on this. Thanks.

One of the reasons that it gives your for sending a refund is for just this reason.

Yes I've used this feature too and it works very smoothly as it automatically
accounts for the refund in Bricklink whilst also automatically refunding from
paypal

Brickowl have recently implemented a similar system but its a lot more of a faff
as you have to refund via the Brickowl site and then log into paypal to refund
the paypal amount seperately

Thank you for the positive feedback. I will share this with the team that developed

The order is completed and filed, I went through the refund option on the order
details but don't seem to be able to see any actual refund made.

Please put an idiot out of his misery and tell me what I'm doing wrong.

see it elsewhere and nothing showing on PayPal .

I think I know what went wrong.
In the first attached picture, did you click on what I've underlined in green
or red?

If you clicked on the "update refund" (red underline) you will just update the
BrickLink order page to reflect what you've already done (in PayPal). If
you do it this way, it may also see that you've done a refund in PayPal for
that order and auto-populate the info.

If you clicked on the "Issue refund" (green underline), it will issue the refund
to PayPal via BrickLink.

If you did the "update refund", just go to PayPal and refund the shipping cost
there. That way you don't get two refunds showing on the BrickLink order
page.

I just finished a refund for shipping through BrickLink and the result looks
like the second picture.

Thanks.

I believe I used the green and then I looked at the red after I didn't see
any actual refund.

When you processed it, was your order still at a stage before marked as completed
?

Mine was marked completed.

I presume the refund showed immediately after, on both the order and PayPal.

Thanks for your help.

Mine was in the shipped status.
But I have done a refund in the completed status before.

The refund showed right away. But there was a “warning” that it could take up
to 5 days for it to appear on your PayPal balance. More if it was via a credit
card.

In your screenshot it shows the payment method as Paypal and not Paypal Onsite.
I assume the refund will only work correctly with Onsite payments because otherwise
BL won't know the transaction details that it would need to process the refund
on Paypal.

Yes I think the buyer must have made a manual payment direct via paypal therefore
as you say BL is probably unaware that the payment was even received?

Just as a refresher -

When you sign up for onsite payments (Paypal for Market Places) you do NOT grant
BrickLink access to your Paypal account (which is why BrickLink cannot do a refund
for a manual payment). Rather, you allow BrickLink to be the intermediary for
onsite payments, which means BrickLink can be like a traffic cop directing payments
around (this does NOT mean that BrickLink receives the payments in their account).

When a payment is made through Paypal onsite, BrickLink gets authenticated access
to that one payment. Later, when a refund needs to be done, BrickLink (being
the traffic cop for that one payment) can use this access to that specific payment
and ask Paypal to reverse part (or all) of the payment.

This "traffic cop" incidentally is also how BrickLink is able to redirect part
of tax-owed payments (like for California and Connecticut) so sellers only receive
payment minus taxes (while the buyer paid the full amount).

Good analogy. Very helpful to understanding better. Well done, Niek!

I can only assume it will only work if you have onsite payments and if you already
have this it could be as the other member has just suggested with going to the
correct Refund Link that they've highlighted otherwise I'm really not
sure why its not worjking for you.

When I logged into paypal to check I saaw the matching amount instantly deducted
from my account so if you don't see this within paypal its probably not yet
been refunded correctly?

It indeed does not look correct. I did a refund 2 days ago (order was in paid
status).
I think you did not do it through the green link (or did not complete it), but
the red one.

I know BL, unlike PayPal, doesn't charge fees on shipping but is it designed
to refund any amount for whatever reason ?

The feature is convenient but just remember that when you do refund that PayPal
doesn’t refund fees involved.

I've made a refund for a lost parcel paid by bank transaction.
First there is no 'Parcel lost in mail' option for a refund reason.
Secondly after I completed the refund page I now see this : 'If you issued
a refund, update the Order details page to include refund details for this order.'
But what do I need to update there? There is no box for a refund amount.
Appears to me like another half-hearted implemented feature with (still) some
loose ends.

Cheers,
Eric
