What's up with it? Pretty sure it was planned on being merged into minifigure,
utensil on October 1st, but now that list doesn't seem to have it anywhere.
Did plans get changed for that?

Hey, good point. I had already moved it in my own catalog, which, if I'm
not mistaken, would suggest it was previously in that list, as I've been
using that list to apply the changes... I'd also like to know what's
up with that?

I believe Randy answered the questions you had.

The Tap category may be removed at some point in the future, but for now it will
remain. All changes shown right now on this page will absolutely occur on October
1st:

Thanks for clearing that up guys. Hope it will be removed in the second iteration,
as in practise it's kind of a one part category

Yeah, I don't know that anyone really objected strongly to the category being
eliminated. It's more of where the items would appropriately fit. In the
interest of moving forward quickly, we decided just to cut it from the list this
time.

The time will come when the Utensil category is too broad, and we will need to
differentiate handheld from environment accessories, for example.

We could do a lot of work in improving categories if we had the ability to create
a category tree with submenus. The existing categories list is ridiculously
huge.

Unfortunately, the development resources aren't there for us right now.

That’ll be difficult.  I thought there were things in there that can’t be held
(or aren’t supposed to be held) by a minifigure.  But they are actually few of
them.

Now, I could see a Tools and a Kitchenware subcategories.  Maybe also “Footgear”
(skate/surf boards…) and Carts & Chairs (carts, trucks, seats).

In my webshop I have:
- Food & kitchen
- Hardware tools
- Sports
- Artistic
- Medical & science
- Electronics
- Treasure & prize
- Other

May not be robust enough for a Bricklink-scale operation, as they are kind of
"soft" and not always mutually exclusive concepts.. but for me it works.

About footgear - didn't that use to be a category? It's pretty confusing
to me that skates and snowshoes are Bodywear, but skis are Utensil. I guess I'd
put them all in Bodywear, or a Footgear category if we had one.

That’s why I put quotes around Footgear: I’ve no idea how to call a skis and
*boards category.

Footensils?

But it would be too small a category anyway, like Carts & Chairs.

And I now realize that mixing a wheelchair with carts and handheld trucks may
not be the most respectuous thing to do   Sorry about that.

Yeah, that's fair. My idea of moving it to Utensil was also just based on
eliminating the category, and not so much on Utensil being the perfect category
for it. Maybe someone will have a better idea for it.

Judging by some of the items getting moved into Scala and Belville categories...
Are we going to be moving more items into those categories then? I was definitely
hoping those theme-type categories would be eliminated and the parts divided
out amongst actual part type categories.

The themed categories are not ideal. I, like you, would like to see them used
less. For the specific items moving to theme categories, I believe those suggestions
from a member were based on the new category sorting guidelines at the top of
this page:

https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=1568

Regardless, it would probably be some time before we figured out a way to address
themed categories. It may take changes in the way the underlying system works
to do properly. The Friends category of parts is the only one I think we're
seriously considering completely clearing out since most of the stuff in there
would move easily.

Yes, plans were changed for that. The admin team could not come to a consensus
on those parts, so they were removed from the planned changes. Everything that
is on the list right now was unanimously agreed upon by all on the admin team.

Thanks for the update! So basically everything on the list right now is confirmed
to change Oct. 1st? Going to be training someone new this week so I want to make
sure I teach them correctly.
