On checkout from my store, please stop:

Pre-selecting a shipping method in my store for any buyer to use.

I cannot and do not set those defaults. BL cannot assume for itself the right
to pick and choose defaults for any contractually determined matter between myself
and the buyer, on my behalf. The shipping method to use is the one the buyer
actively chooses.

I had an order this morning where the buyer told me in prior negotiation what
he wanted. He was then able to place an order using a different shipping method.
This because that experienced buyer did not think to change what was pre-selected
by BL during checkout.

I also had an order last week from a new user who did exactly the same thing.
It is not for BL to choose what shipping method is applicable for any buyer.

At one point on BL people would regularly build their order over time adding
parts here and there. This is fine as long as I know so I do not send and resend
invoices (which at times created buyer confusion and paying of an old incorrect
invoice amount) each and every time not knowing what the intentions of the buyer
were. I created a method called "Hold for additions" to accommodate this and
it helped those types of orders. At a point BL resorted how my shipping methods
get displayed putting the "Hold for additions" at the top of the list (Default)
which about 75% of buyers do actually change to what they desire. Many do not
change it and wonder why I have not invoiced them, claim I am slow to invoice.
I only know what I am told. I did change the length of time I automatically invoice
if I do not hear from them from 7 to 3 days.
It seems to be less and less that people add to orders so I have been considering
removing that shipping option.
To your point..... If BL did Not have any preselected shipping method checked
the buyer would be forced to actually read and choose a shipping method. This
habit of not choosing a shipping method is not only new(ish) members but happens
with 1,000+ FB members as well. Maybe the BL market buyers have changed and it
is time to give one option ("Most cost effective shipping") at checkout and
deal with the ones who add like in the early days of BL.
I still have not set up IC so the way this works for me may not apply to
IC orders.

This is exactly why I had to remove the Hold Open option; so many people started
selecting as soon as I had it enabled. After a few in a row I started messaging
and asking them if they were already complete after the first pass, and they
all were. I had to disable it.

Same thing for the "free" local pickup. Previously, I had that as an option and
so many selected it (likely the first pre-selected option) as soon as I turned
it on. But for almost every one of them I had to invoice with shipping as they
were not local. Right now, I was able to re-enable it but it's safely at
the bottom of the list. If we had control over the order of the shipping methods,
it would be much appreciated. Maybe it already exists and I'm unaware, but
I couldn't figure out how to enforce it.

The order of the shipping methods (at least for stores that have 1 or more IC
shipping methods) is: Starting with all "automatic invoice" methods, in order
from cheapest to most expensive for that order (based on your IC settings). The
bottom of the list contains the "manual invoice" methods.
If the "free" shipping options (for my store: "keep the order open" and "local
delivery") were also set to automatic, they would always be selected by default,
because cheaper than regular shipping.

So did the buyer have beer?

But yes, I agree. Better to force the buyer to select something and read them
rather than default to one that is unsuitable.
