Dear BrickLink community,

On June 19th of this year, we will mark the 20th anniversary of the creation of BrickLink.

Dan Jezek dedicated his life to creating a platform where all LEGO® fans could find the special bricks that they needed. This platform bridged their dream creation to the missing pieces, and the platform is what you know today as BrickLink. BrickLink became the place to meet others who share the same passion for the colorful bricks and the build itself.

We grew, we evolved, and we are proud of the accomplishments we have made thus far. But as confident as we are in the future, we recognize that BrickLink will not be what it is today without this community. We formally thank you for your trust and support all these years. We would like to express our gratitude for you and members of the community for choosing BrickLink as your main source for LEGO elements and sets.

How are we celebrating?

We are celebrating by hosting a 20 Days of BrickLink event to highlight milestones and members from the past and present while looking toward the future. We invite you to share your story about any of the following:

Coming across BrickLink – Kindly share your story about how you came across BrickLink, and how it has changed your interest in LEGO elements and sets.

Finding friendship – Please tell us about a time you found friendship on BrickLink, highlight the moment you interacted with them, and how you met in real life (if applicable).

Buyer/seller story – Everyone has a favorite BrickLink seller/buyer story. Can you share with us what your favorite story is?

Hopes for future BrickLink – What hopes do you have for BrickLink in the near future?

You will be able to include a photo or video to further illustrate your story, and you can make a submission starting today. If you have more than one story to share with the community, we encourage you to share it!

Prefer to upload a MOC instead? Go to My Studio, proceed to edit your MOC’s details, then add the tag 20 Years of BrickLink so that other members can easily find it.

Where can I find more information?

An announcement with a general daily schedule will be posted on Friday, June 19th. Stay tuned, and stay connected with us on Facebook or Instagram.

We look forward to reading your story!

Thank you,

The BrickLink Team

Almost 20 years for me (77th person to sign up). Still remember when there were
just a couple of stores and one of them was Dans ( and buying from him). Hard
to believe it’s been that long.

Wow, as someone who's only been on here since 2016, it's really cool
to see some "ancients" still around. (no offense)

Can I qualify for 'ancient' being here since 2002? Where do we draw
the line?

I'd say anything 2005 and older is ancient.

For any of you that self-qualify as "ancient", we would love to receive a story
about those early years:

https://www.bricklink.com/r3/20years/your_story.page

It's nice to read stories in the Forum at any time (and there have been many
shared over the years) but the 20 Days of BrickLink event is an opportunity to
give them a little more exposure.

Of course, we'd also like to hear from those that have been here only a short
time as well.

been here since 2003 and I do miss the long, extra long threads where one could
make popcorn and enjoy the read. LOL Like the huge discussion on making complete
assemblies part of the catalog. I was on the side that lost but now they are
in the catalog so I guess I win in the end.

ok submitted this little nugget: How the BL Chat came about:

There used to be a feature called Chat on BL it came about because of 2 crazy
characters Asterios (me) and Emerald Oak (EO) both of these unsavory characters
made a nuisance of themselves having conversations in the BL forums, yes conversations,
it got to the point that Dan decided to set up a chat group for BL, now why chat
went away, that is also muddled in mystery since so many reasons were given from
functionality to abuse to who knows what.

went away, that is also muddled in mystery since so many reasons were given from
functionality to abuse to who knows what.

Ah, chat. I never participated much myself (only about an hour of time total)
but apparently some people used it extensively.

meh I've only been a member here for just over 18 years of that time

Almost 20 years for me (77th person to sign up). Still remember when there were
just a couple of stores and one of them was Dans ( and buying from him). Hard
to believe it’s been that long.

Wow, as someone who's only been on here since 2016, it's really cool
to see some "ancients" still around. (no offense)

What's that sonny?

Can I qualify for 'ancient' being here since 2002? Where do we draw
the line?

For any of you that self-qualify as "ancient", we would love to receive a story
about those early years:

https://www.bricklink.com/r3/20years/your_story.page

It's nice to read stories in the Forum at any time (and there have been many
shared over the years) but the 20 Days of BrickLink event is an opportunity to
give them a little more exposure.

Of course, we'd also like to hear from those that have been here only a short
time as well.

ok submitted this little nugget: How the BL Chat came about:

There used to be a feature called Chat on BL it came about because of 2 crazy
characters Asterios (me) and Emerald Oak (EO) both of these unsavory characters
made a nuisance of themselves having conversations in the BL forums, yes conversations,
it got to the point that Dan decided to set up a chat group for BL, now why chat
went away, that is also muddled in mystery since so many reasons were given from
functionality to abuse to who knows what.

Ah, chat. I never participated much myself (only about an hour of time total)
but apparently some people used it extensively.

After you replied to me directly, I felt obligated to share a story

I didn't know that you have been around long enough to remember chat. TBH
I only remember seeing you around a couple years ago. But my past with BL was
on and off for a few years. So what do I know lol.

Holy crap! Can't remember how (or why) many times I've randomly ended
up seeing this profile. Now it all links together! I think I'm safe to
make the assumption that I'm sure over the years you've seen me around.
I think it's something innate that happens to all us 'old-timers'
lol

So true! It's about how you view it

But I gotta ask, what car would you have bought? So that I also imagine it

You sir are in fact, a bit of BL history, a living bit

I feel the history whenever I look up my spending history ( I can buy a really
nice car with up I have spent in those 20 years)

So true! It's about how you view it

But I gotta ask, what car would you have bought? So that I also imagine it

I won’t have to let you imagine...I just looked it up and my purchase total is
at $47,438.
But divided by almost 20 years that is not to much.

Okay. My expenditure, far dwarfs yours in the 15 years I've spent here. So
again I ask, what car do you envision having bought with the $47. 438 spent here?

I just took a look at my purchase numbers. You have me beat by quite a margin,
though my $4,200+ in shipping cost is nothing to scoff at.

In fact, I could use that money right about now.

ID 229 for me. You're one of a handful of people I remember during a more
interactive stage of my BL experience. I started on here when I was about 16
years old. It was not common for teenagers to run online stores then.

What a great experience being a part of the community has been. But the greatest
delight is in trying to guess what MOC someone is completing when they're
buying a SW figure

Where can you even see all the MOcs that honor Bricklink and the stories that
were published????

Finalized earlier this year

I remember looking at the site when it was new. But I didn't buy anything.
I think I saw people talking about it on Classic-castle.com (which I guess still
exists!) ha!

So nice to see members on here from the very beginning. 20 years. Wow. Bricklink
was the first Lego community that I engaged with as I was coming out of my Lego
dark ages. Glad I found it.

I can’t speak for Julie but myself and many others I know that signed up ( I
was the 75th or so person to sign up) was due to Dans post on Lugnet. And as
I said in my post the other day I remember actually buying from Dans store.

Been here just over half that time, but would not have a clue how to look up
how much I have spent on here. What is gone is gone - could not get it back
if I wanted to, so why would I need to know?
Heaven only knows how much I SOLD on here in that same time. I'd guess about
the same amount.
My only worry is how many more unannounced changes I might see since Lego took
over. There are a few I would like to see, though. Anything beginning with
an x has a different number everywhere else (frequently the number originally
given by Lego as a design ID) so it would help if that changed. Otherwise I
just keep plodding on and hoping for the best.

I think you misunderstood. I knew about the ID card bit. What I was saying
was I did not know how much MONEY I had spent on here or how to find out.

Don't feel the need. Love the hobby and spend what I need to spend to build
what I want. Sell extra/duplicate parts to fund those purchases. There is no
other need for me to be on here, though I do like the interaction......most of
the time. Dislike the sharks and people who try to insist we all do it their
way. Our hobby is supposed to be fun and I have no time for those who want to
spoil other people's enjoyment of the site. Those who do this for a living
should remember a very high percentage of us do not. I do not sell enough to
pay tax in my country; nor do I want to. All countries have such different rules
for trading you cannot all do things the same way. Most traders seem reasonable
people on here - large or small - and I say good luck to everyone who wants to
buy or sell or use the forum. Just, please, remember how we all started. We
loved Lego. Let us not lose sight of that or stop enjoying it. If I no longer
enjoyed my time on here I would simply leave. No discussion, no rant, no repercussions
- just go and find enjoyment some other way.

Ah, spend time vs. spend money

It’s “funny” how, at the same time, English has so many words (most of them stolen
from every other language ) and each word have so many meanings.

Me neither but it seems a trait that’s easier and easier to express (asocial
media…).
Not really easy to see the difference between sharing and showing off.

I'd say not so much stolen in most cases as imposed upon us by successive
invaders (Romans, Normans, Danes, Vikings etc) I suppose you know that when
it comes to food we use the words the Normans used for cooked animals and Germanic
ones for the live animals.

That is sometimes true - though you do see some people's words and half expect
them to be followed by 'My Dad's bigger or stronger than your dad'
types of comments. I sometimes think some remarks' true meanings are lost
in translation as well - being a site used by many different countries with different
cultures and mother tongues. I'm afraid I am hopeless at emoticons so you
cannot tell if I am having a laugh or not.

I'd say not so much stolen in most cases as imposed upon us by successive
invaders (Romans, Normans, Danes, Vikings etc)

I was just summarizing this quote:

“We don't just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages
down alleyways to beat them unconscious and riffle their pockets for new vocabulary.”
— James Nicoll

Okay, he’s a Canadian, but you all speak English, don’t you?

But I could also remark and wonder why you only talked about the people who invaded
your Island and not about the ones you invaded and from which you borrowed words
too, or on which you imposed your language.

I suppose you know that when
it comes to food we use the words the Normans used for cooked animals and Germanic
ones for the live animals.

Yep, and I know all about the long history of the English people’s love-hate
for the French language: how French is both “bad” (because Normans & elite) and
“fashionable” (for about the same reasons, actually ), or how English’s
spelling is a mess because the ones who wrote it spoke (Old) French and the ones
who spoke it only wanted it not to sound like French at all.

But then, I guess one could say French have a similar relationship with the English
language.

I'd say it really is more of an addiction than anything. I mean, total the
cost of your collection and that will tell you just how badly you are addicted.
I know I am at about 3k or so in.

I am happy to see, that Bricklink has the same date for birthday like me
I am a member since 4th of July 2003, the first years mostly as a buyer to complete
sets.

The most exciting stories were surely in the beginning.
To do payments all over the world was not so easy as it is today.

My first oversea transaction was for a yellow cone 4x4x2 to complete my 6954,
for this set was only available in North America and I wanted to have all classic
space models complete.
To that time the only other source for that part was the shell train wagon and
hard to find.

And remembering the first years, there was a guy from Japan, who asked me, if
I would accept Deutsche Mark, which were already replaced by Euro for over a
year and I could help him out, because i still had the chance to change the currency
here in Germany.

And I remember, that there used to be an auction area, which not really got accepted
by the audience.

And WOW, it is so great, how Bricklink evolved.
I LOVE IT !

Thank you,

I've been on here as a buyer for 14 years and a seller for about 3 years
now. I just wish I had opened my doors to selling a few years earlier. I love
the community we have here as the majority of sellers and buyers are super nice
geeks like myself sharing our passion for favorite hobby that is Lego!

My only gripes with our Bricklink family is that there are a sad few only in
it for profit rather than to support their own and others hobby. And a hand full
of sellers that have defaced the value of Lego by selling way under market pricing
forcing other sellers to have to plummet their prices to even sell anything.
If I could ask only one thing from our higher powers either Lego or the heads
of Bricklink would be to have a suggested price point that doesn't allow
a seller to go under or over the minimum and maximum suggested pricing.

Lastly but not forgotten. Thank you all for making this community of Lego lovers
a such a great place to be. I've had so many great memories here to this
day and look forward to many more in the future.

Troy's still at it (placed an order with him not long ago) just not at the
helm of BL. It was a little bit of a jolt, his announcement of hanging it up.

Stoked that I finally got around to joining BrickLink just a few months before
its anniversary. This website and its members have been absolutely amazing, and
I'm so happy to be a part of it.

Congratulations, BrickLink!

I have been here for probably edging on a year now with an account, but I have
been observing for many more. I was recommended it by many people who I asked
about buying parts. I at the time had little money to buy the parts, but enjoyed
just browsing, dreaming of the things I wanted to build. I made my first purchase
almost to the day a year ago to complete a Boeing 787 Dreamliner set that was
missing a bunch of parts that I got from a friend in a bulk gift as he was going
off to college. Since then, I haven't been too active on the site, but just
recently really got into designing and have been posting a ton on the Studio
Gallery. I most recently have done a LEGO Ideas submission and broke out from
the Speed Champions scale into 1:17th scale, all visible on my page. I have interacted

I am working on lots of revamps to stuff that hasn't been posted on here
yet, but they needed a severe revamp. Overall, this site has been very good to
me. The people here are amazing and I love the community. I want to say Ive looked
at the site for 5 years in total, but I couldn't tell you for sure. I know
there are a lot of really old members here, but I am here as a relative newbie
and hope to be here and stand with the site veterans. Lets make the next many
years a good one for BrickLink!

been observing for many more.

Your whole story, including the time when you were a "lurker", is something we
are celebrating - you can count it all.

And for the more "ancient" of you, we'd be very interested to hear your stories
as well of what life was like before BrickLink and some of the major influences
during those early years.

I found BrickLink 16 years ago this month. I was searching for parts to finish
a Black Seas Barracuda.

I love shopping at thrift stores and second-hand shops and came across a large
bag of LEGO for $6.88. I saw the bright red cloth sails and new this must be
part of a LEGO pirate ship. I never had pirate sets as a child, so my inner-child
leaped for joy. I purchased the set and got home and searched for instructions
online. I began building it and found that I was only missing 8-9 parts. After
an internet search on how to replace those parts, I came across BrickLink. My
first order was for $5.73, which included shipping. With it I was able to complete
a Black Seas Barracuda for less than $13! I was hooked.

This thrift store find and my BrickLink experience brought me out of my Dark
Ages. Now I own hundreds of thousands of LEGO parts and over 500 classic (pre-1999)
LEGO sets, including the complete Pirate line.

It has been a great ride. My family (wife and four sons) enjoy building together
and attending various LEGO events. I've met many new friends online, at
club events, and conventions.

Pictures of some of my collection can be found here: https://flic.kr/s/aHsmJvqdDb

Here's to another 20+ years of BrickLink.

I've only been on BrickLink for a year and a half now, but it's been
a wonderful experience for myself as an AFOL and is my go-to site for getting
Lego for my kids as well.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRICKLINK.
My son and I thank you. Keeping the Story of Dan Jezek alive is
wonderful for all of us, young and old.
Best wishes for the next 20+ years.
