| So, I recently placed an order at S&H to get the DOTS bracelets, and some other
stuff, and I accidentally found these key chains. The pictures are terrible and
totally inaccurate, but the descriptions intrigued me; iridescent and metallized
key chains?
I didn't know what to expect, but I put them in my shopping cart. This is
what I got, and I couldn't be more delighted. The iridescent one is especially
stunning. I put Sweet Mayhem there too because of her similarly holographic hair.
I have a full review with more pictures for those of you who are interested:
http://thebrickblogger.com/2020/03/lego-iridescent-blue-chrome-black-key-chains/
Neither of these key chains are in the BrickLink database as of yet, but if they
do get added I recommend replacing LEGO's stock images with actual photos.
They are too beautiful to be hidden like that. I think 2x4 collectors would be
very interested.

Thanks for sharing this! There is a new range of iridescent colors starting this
year. Official they are called Opal. We have been calling them Satin (for now,
anyway). But yes, we do want actual photos of any exotic color whenever possible.
Unfortunately we do not inventory items that make up key chain parts since they
are glued/screwed together. But maybe we can put the color name in the gear Item
Name so at least people can find it through a general search.

Yeah, adding the color or special feature to the name would help a lot, and of
course, adding actual pictures. Opal is a great color too! I think that's
the one for the jewels in the DOTS sets. Very pretty too!

If you buy more than one you`ll recognize they look different - maybe depending
on the thickness of the coating or a slightly different kind of coating? It`s
not caused by the incidence of light.

Did you notice the logo orientation / chain attachment correlates with the iridescence?
(That is both bricks with “top” chain are more iridescent than the ones with
“bottom” chain.)

Hmm in my understanding, "satin" refers to the way a colour looks (like matte,
glossy, metallic) and not to any specific actual colour. Not sure if I'm
right, but Opal certainly sounds a lot better to me.

Indeed, that’s why the new colours are:
Satin White
Satin Trans-Light Blue
Satin Trans-Dark Pink
for BL while they are, respectively,
(Unnamed)
Tarnsparent Blue Opal
Transparent Medium Reddish Violet Opal
for LEGO.

Satin is a finish. It's an indication of smoothness and reflectance, similar
or reminiscent of the material.
Other finishes in paper are wove, bond, felt, laid, and linen...these are typically
indicative of a texture that's pressed into the paper at the time of manufacture.
These finishes are on uncoated (not glossy) stock.
Some coated stock finishes are gloss, matte, and dull.
Paint will also use silk as a designation of finish. It usually lies between
matte and gloss.
If BrickLink is going to use "silk" as a color, then I'd like to suggest
burlap, corduroy, hemp, twigs, type two, and open O for future colors, because
they're also just as fun and useful. Hey! Everybody knows what color type
two is, right?

Most of your remarks on names and descriptions are very well founded, and I get
the comical device of exaggeration, but this, this’s just disingenuous: You
cut my answer where the BL colour names were listed, colour names in which Satin
is clearly used a modificator (“finish”) of other, known and common colours,
White, Trans-Light Blue, and Trans-Dark Pink, and then you go on to imply BL
wants to use Satin as a colour and not a finish.

| Apologies, Sylvain.
I typically cut most or all of the quoted post because I figure if folks are
invested enough, they'll read the thread. I hate the posts where they are
187 messages long and the whole thing is quoted and quoted and quoted to the

Not trying to poke you in les yeux or anything like that. Just saying that
satin is a finish, and if anyone's been paying attention, Russell said they
were calling the color satin (for now).
Satin is not a color. It is a fabric. And from the fabric, adopted a a term for
a finish in papers and other coatings.
That is all.

The three new colors that are currently being discussed are called
Satin White
Satin Trans-Dark Pink
Satin Trans-Light Blue
When these colors were named by Russell, I disagreed with the names. I felt they

I’d prefer Opalescent but that’s my French brain speaking. Opal can do as a
short form.
Satin is “continuous,” smooth. Opal(escent) is “pailleté” (sequined/spangled)
(and milky).
The parts don’t look smooth as satin.

Yes, the correct term would be "opalescent", but we don't spell out "transparent"
in the transparent colors either. The short form "opal" is fine.

I would prefer Opal over Satin. That being said, it is the iridescence that is
giving this color the effect. So Iridescent is a better adjective to the color
effect. Satin makes even less sense, as wikipedia describes it as glossy with
a dull back.

Is there a shorter or easily understood abbreviation of the term, making it even

I agree with that (and do it too) but that’s not what you did: You didn’t remove
the chaff, you removed the facts which, strangely, didn’t go with your story.
(And as you cut all I said, you could have directly answered to Teup’s message

But they are not. They are calling them Satin White, Satin Trans-Light Blue
and Satin Trans-Dark Pink.
If you take this fact into account then you understantd that what Russell said
is a slip of the tongue, an abuse of language, or bad metonymy: he thought “finish”
(or even simply “colours”, because there are three) and said “colour”
instead.
| Satin is not a color. It is a fabric. And from the fabric, adopted a a term for

|
And that’s exactly how it’s used by BL for colours.
And in the exact same way LEGO doesn’t call these colours “opal” but uses “opal”
as a qualifier for known colours (well, at least for two of them as we don’t
know the name of the white one).
Ditto.
And on a totally different note, the song “Eternally” by Charlie Chaplin/Geoffrey
Parsons is known as “Deux petits chaussons (de satin blanc)”/“Two Little sleepers
(in white satin)” in French (totally different lyrics).
