Hello, I'm new here in Bricklink but I've already ordered two times and
one more that hasn't been paid yet.

The first 2 times were from Slovakia and Russia, towards the Philippines. I have
a 3rd one that I haven't paid yet because I was shocked by the cost of tracking.

This third one is from Canada and the seller states that the cost of shipping
will be $19.99 but that's without tracking. If I opt for tracking, there
will be an additional cost of $21.99.

How true is this? Am I being played? I don't remember having a huge increase
in cost in my first 2 orders for tracking so I'm hesitant to push through
with this order.

International tracking from Canada is expensive, $22 extra is not unusual.

Really? That sucks, it would have helped if the seller mentioned it in the seller's
terms but I guess it was my fault for not asking beforehand. The tracking is
even more expensive than the shipping. XD

Thanks for answering my question! I learned something new today.

If you explain the situation, the seller might be understanding and cancel for
you particularly if tracking costs were'nt mentioned in their terms. I'm
assuming you specifically chose the Insurance option but keep in mind whatever
sellers may say such as "I don't take responsibility for lost goods when
no issurance selected" Insurance or not the seller is responsible for making
sure you receive what you paid for and if a seller expects to sell goods to people
on a marketplace they need to expect to share the risks/responsibility therefore
opting for no insurance may have been the better option depending on how much
you spent?

From what I recall I couldn't check the insurance option when I placed the
order and for shipping methods the seller only had "request for invoice." I didn't
really understand what it meant and assumed that I would be given options after
the order was placed and before payments were made.

Granted, the seller gave me the option no have or not have tracking.

After all the responses I do believe the mistake is mostly mine. I'll research
some more and just ask the seller if I can still cancel.

Check it yourself:
https://www.canadapost.ca/cpotools/apps/far/business/farLetter?execution=e3s1

If it is letter (small size), check "large envelope"
If it contains thick parts (thicker than 1.7cm), check "parcel"

Look at options "air mail" (Ignore "surface mail").

Thanks, will do! Do these rates include tracking? Because it's the jump of
price from no tracking to with tracking is what surprised me.

Yes, the cost for international mail service from Canada Post increases significantly
if a method with tracking is chosen. On the other hand, some of those methods
promise faster delivery.

I almost always ship international orders without tracking because of this difference.

If you don't track the order, how do you know that the package has arrived
in your country? Or do you just wait for it to arrive at its destination?

I ask this because from what I researched, where I'm from, the post office
doesn't deliver door to door if the package comes from overseas.

I have simply trusted my buyers to let me know if the package does not arrive.
I have had only one order go missing out of all my orders.

USA shipping is also very expensive compared to Europe, just to warn you

Will keep that in mind, thanks! Next time, I'll just ask the seller how much
the shipping and tracking will be before placing an order. I was just shocked
to know that tracking packages from Canada added $22 more to the cost.

I did try to use the Canada Post webpage where you can get the estimate for shipping
cost and thought the estimate was acceptable and it was near the shipping cost
the seller told me. But again, when the seller mentioned that there would be
an additional $22 for tracking, I was shocked.

But now knowing that this is the norm, I'll be careful and ask more details
next time. For now, I'll just ask the seller if it's still okay to cancel
the order.

Asking is best. I'm so happy when overseas buyers ask first, so I don't
have to cancel things. We don't really have untracked options here.

Also remember there are often "brackets". So for example I can ship up to a certain
weight for X number of ounces.

It doesn't go up in little steps like it does domestically. You can add more
items and not have the cost go up (I usually offer this option to people, because
it makes the shipping cost hurt less if you are buying more stuff)

Its always a good option to check out the mail carrier websites for the countries
you are ordering from, this way you can know in advance what the prices should
be.
I am constantly amazed at the cost of postage from the US and Canada compared
to the Royal Mail (UK) postage.

Yeah, I'll do that next time. I'm new to buying online so I'm not
sure what to do yet but people are giving me pointers here so I'm learning.
Haha. My previous orders were from Slovakia and Russia and I thought costs would
be more or less the same. That was a huge misconception. XD

Is it only the US and Canada that have very high cost of postage? I'll try
to avoid sellers in those countries from now on if there are other options.

I use also a private courier company. Its prices to 24 countries is the cheapest
in the world (and includes tracking and insurance) and to other countries is
still much cheaper than CanadaPost.

When seller accepts to take the risk and ship to me without tracking and insurance,
I would not take him responsible, as far as he provides me a proof that he actually
shipped. For orders of low value, it is ok to take the risk since most orders
will be delivered but I do not know about your countries.
I shipped without tracking once to Peru and once to Indonesia and they were delivered.

I am constantly amazed at the cost of postage with Rotal Mail when the total
size of more than 90cm: 80GBP with limited insurance!

I can ship with ChitChats a parcel of wight 3kg and total size 100cm to UK for
about 25-35GBp with tracking and insurance.

Well Technically thats posted with Parcelforce worldwide.

But I take your meaning, shopping around is always an option and making sure
the shop you buy from is allowing these options or will at least have the discussion
to try to reduce postage cost if they have the options.
