I'm watching the new Lego Masters show. How does one become such a good
designer/builder other than simply time and experience? Is there a Lego design
school etc.?

Thanks in advance...!!!

You better watch out! If you are going to use illegal building techniques (i.e.
illegal in the eyes of the Lego corp), you are bound to be hit by the purists
police and have your creations removed....

This is going beyond a joke indeed.... migration to another platform comes to
mind (again).

No design school that I know of, but it would benefit you to have a large inventory
of parts to draw inspiration from.

Time and hands on experience are definitely required ingredients. You will benefit
if you have the agility, patience and creativity of your inner child. Having
some knowledge about geometry comes useful.

On the Links page of Bricklink (found under Community) you will see many websites
about almost all LEGO-related things you can imagine: https://www.bricklink.com/links.asp

Besides Bricklink, my favorites are http://www.newelementary.com/ and https://www.brothers-brick.com/
that show many incredulous builds by great builders. Once you have familiarized
yourself with the variety of shapes and connections that are possible with LEGO
(there are tens of thousands, so you'll never reach the point that you won't
be surprised by something new), you will spot the ingenious uses that are made
within the models. Once you spot one of these uses, it may give you ideas to
experiment and create your own little MOC. And for this you need some bricks
(possibly bought here on Bricklink) or a virtual tool like Studio (also here
on Bricklink).

Another way of learning is to build official LEGO sets and see what they have
come up with. Especially the Technic sets and Modular series are useful resources
for getting new ideas.

But most importantly: have fun and just build.

Hands on experience, putting together Expert Creator sets (for interesting ideas
on how to parts in unique ways), YouTube videos... and more hands on experience.

I have never done a MOC and I'm envious of those who can... I need instructions.
