1-2) Both of mine were black
4-5) All of mine were 6538a
6-7) I got 5 As and 6 Bs.
I have a few pics that I took to document it as I sorted it out, but not sealed. I also got 8 light gray 2736 and none of the similar parts. That doesn't seem to line up with the alternates here, but I don't know how to work on that.

Note to Paul:
Do not yet do anything with this inventory. It is one of the few known redesigned
sets in the catalog that has not yet been updated using Match ID 99. Before we
even consider these changes, the inventory will need to be updated to the new
format.

- white 6540 or white 6540b?
- light gray 2736 or black 2736?

I am at work and cannot check the instructions. But I got 4 white 6540b, which
delighted me because they are more valuable. And I got 8 light gray 2736.

I am at work and cannot check the instructions. But I got 4 white 6540b, which

Good, but the values of 6540 and 6540b are not that different.
Anyway, since you have the newer version, you have the chance to compare the
two versions. Mine is the one on Peeron, Lego.com,... so I cannot do that. Even
the build of the second model might have got updated.

There is the same catalog in my box. I bought it from Germany. I guess you bought
yours also from Europe?
This means that TLG corrected the inventory and changed few parts (changed 6540
to 6540b) on the very first year of production (1994). Interesting.
