Today is such an exciting day at the BrickLink office because we finally get to reveal a very special collaboration with none other than the LEGO Group. We’ve been bursting at the seams because of how long we’ve had to keep this program a secret! Now that we’ve all had a minute to scream and catch our breaths, let’s get into the details.

What is the AFOL Designer Program?

This program celebrates creativity by realizing unique AFOL designs with truly original themes. What better timing than to kick it off in the year of the 60th anniversary of the LEGO brick? For a limited time, BrickLink will be hosting the AFOL Designer Program. We are honored to help highlight your creativity and help make your designs a reality.

Where can I get more information?

An official announcement and more details about the program will be revealed Wednesday, September 12th. Mark your calendars!

 -BrickLink Team

Okay, maybe you need to change the disclaimer on the bottom of the website saying
that Lego "does not sponsor, authorize, or endorse this site".....?
Not sure wether I am happy or sad about this. Will it generate sales in a market
Lego does not endorse...? Strange, I go for that at this moment....

Isn't that just a basic (Fair Play?) disclaimer so people cannot complain
to LEGO about any problems on BrickLink? I think it is good to see a cooperation
like this.

Other than that... the exciting news is that we will have exciting news next
week.

And reword this part of the announcement: "let’s get into the details."
Maybe, "Here's a brief intro, details to follow next week."

This announcement doesn't suggest that they are sponsoring, authorizing,
or endorsing this site. They're authorizing it de-facto I guess. And if they
post about this new opportunity on their own website or social media with a link
to bricklink, then they'd be endorsing it I guess. But still.

Agreed this sounds VERY EXCITING!!

The only sad line was for limited time. I have a vast number of projects I'd
like a better program for design, purchase item list, way to get items in bricklink.

So many years since Lego shut down their own limited elements version we could
buy our custom sets through them. It would be great if they made similar here.

I hope one of the details is unlimited Element choices!!!!!!! That was always
a problem with the old system.

Sure we have design programs now that require several programs to work at once.
Would love to see a smoother working single program. No offense and thank you
to all that worked on the others.

I will be waiting for the details of this new program hoping for it is well designed.

Er, haven’t you heard about BrickLink’s own CAD, Stud.io? One program to bind
them all (designing, rendering, making instructions, buying on BL).
(Red brick icon up there, between Shop and Community.)

FYI the BL one doesn't work well for my computer. Link won't even allow
me to download regardless of what I do to stop my firewalls and virus software
to permit it. LDD etc has now problems on my system.

Okay, that sucks.
You were talking like it didn’t exist (which, in a way, it doesn’t for you).

Anyway, I doubt a new CAD / MoC-buying thingy will be the announcement. At most,
it will be a collaboration with Ideas (which now includes Rebrick).

An announcement about an announcement. Dangerous territory as now there will
be speculation about what it is and why it is/isn't needed.

Is it MOCshop v2.0?

And I, for one, welcome any communication from BL.
(There have been other announcements but, in this form, it had been 448 days
since the last one.)

Don’t jinx it!

Close cousins are those intelligence-insulting primetime soap operas masquerading
as entertainment; the so-called (highly scripted) 'reality shows'. Their
favorite tactic is to schedule a commercial break at the height of the drama.

"And the chef whose soufflé will be flushed down the toilet tonight is..." *commercial
break*.

(Before any accusations of hypocrisy start flying, I'm only aware of the
existence of these farcical delights because this is the entertainment of choice
[via Hulu] at the gym where I had physical therapy. All the more reason
to just stick to movies).

Sheer delight. I nominate you to write for television. I will even pay subscription.

Too late now.

Um - I think you forgot to write any details.

I would call this a tease, not an announcement.

the system seems to be barely handling the current traffic speed-wise.

Guys,
Are you sure you are still not in your dark ages?!

More jargon

If you send an email to all Bricklink users, then you will also reach a lot of
parents and grandparents who just bought something for a child. There are many
valid reasons to buy LEGO here. Not all BrickLink users are AFOLs.

Dark Ages:
A period in a LEGO fan’s life when he or she sets aside LEGO in favor of school,
dating, motor vehicles, or other non-LEGO pursuits. Many fans put their LEGO
collections in storage or sell them during their Dark Ages.

An official announcement and more details about the program will be revealed Wednesday, September 12th. Mark your calendars!

Ok,does that mean that the LEGO Group starts selling bricks on bricklink? Are
the other sellers supposed to compete against LEGO (which is impossible)?

This is highly unlikely - In fact, I can guarantee that it will
never happen. LEGO already has a means of selling both sets and
parts - 'LEGO Shop', and 'Bricks & Pieces'. Adding a store on
Bricklink would be pointless, as 1.) they would still only sell the sets and
parts that they are already selling on their site, and 2.) they would be required
to pay fees/deal with customers directly/work with an unfamiliar structure/etc.
There is absolutely no reason for them to abandon, or even to branch out
from, their current system.

Have you used their LEGO Shop and "Bricks and Pieces"? The usability is customer
unfriendly, and a bricklink store has all the features a customer needs, quick
navigation by category, wanted lists,etc... And a 3% bricklink fee is peanuts
for the LEGO Group as they are able to offer the parts at factory prices. Also
bricklink opens a new door to thousands of new customers and not only (A)FOLs
and so on

K but like, what is it? Because Stud.io is already this site’s built in designer

I think it’s “Designer” as in “a person who designs,” not the computer program.

I'm not sure what AFOL stands for, but you may want to re-think the acronym.
The 1st time I saw it, I read it as "awful" and now I can't not read it as
the "Awful" Designer Program.

The abbreviation AFOL has been in use since 1995. It is not something new for
this program.

It stands for "Adult Fan Of LEGO", and, while some pronounce it as 'awful',
I say 'AY-fohl'.

More like the "affle" in "waffle", but it's most likely to be misheard as
"awful".

  I say 'AY-fohl'.

"FOL", of course, rhyming with "hole", and the "F" sound not being one that carries
as well as others. Not a significant improvement. I'm not sure I've
heard anyone actually use the latter pronunciation in person, and I've _never_
heard anyone use the former. Mostly I think my experience has been people saying
A.F.O.L. It's much harder to mix it up with something that sounds bad, and
people learn how it's spelled without having to ask.

Found this bit on the Lego.com site: Adult Fans of LEGO (AFOLs) to provide valuable
dialog and initiate activities of relevance to the success between the LEGO Group
and the Adult Fan of LEGO (AFOL) community. For more information...

It is mind boggling that any member of this site would not know what AFOL was.
The acronym has been around for MANY years. It was even the title of a documentary.

Maybe you should have just contained your excitement a few more days rather than
posting this vague teaser with a section called "What is the AFOL Designer Program?"
then proceed to say absolutely nothing at all about what. it. is.

I agree. It is not just posting on the forum, or posting the headline banner
on the site but also then sending email to say there will be an announcement
next week about something.

If they have something to say, then say it. Teasers are just annoying and may
well turn people against whatever they are going to do.

Perhaps they're contractually obligated to tease since they're collaborating
with TLG. The LEGO Group has a certain passion for teasing folks.

Teasers take advantage of the way the human brain works to influence human behavior

So following on, every seller here should post an announcement in Sales that
they will be uploading more stock next week/month. And maybe follow it up with
a couple of reminders before they upload their stock. Obviously without saying
what the stock they will be uploading is, other than it is exciting.

I believe that exact thing just happened two posts prior to yours (or is that

Interesting, but unclear how this will differ from Lego Ideas. On the one hand
it's good that Lego are finally acknowledging bricklink and AFOLs, and are
engaging with the Lego community (which they already do to some degree). The
cynical part of me thinks - is this just them trying to poach ideas from AFOL
to sell themselves? Sorry to be so negative!

LEGO can already do that through Ideas if they really want to.

If BL are involved, it surely has to have some arrangement that any parts required
are bought via BL, otherwise what is the point?

I actually expect this to open possibilities to buy designs that Lego in it's
ideas program is not willing to do.
Nice designs can be put up in this program, and through Bricklink can simply
be bought outright. Somebody created a great set, and Bricklink can sell the
instructions and bricks in one go, giving the designer a great way to share their
design for compensation.

An open version of IDEAS, with some form of support from LEGO as well. Though
I can't really see the role of LEGO in this yet.

Oh well, we'll find out next week what it really is.

But how is that going to work if 1000+ people want to buy that same MOC/nice
design and order the same bricks at the same time? The prizes are going to be
crazy for some parts.

I just got an email about an announcement and clicked on the link. It's an
announcement that there's going to be an announcement! I hope the announcement
is less of an anticlimax than the announcement about the announcement.

People, it's a collaboration. Just because two companies are doing an event
together does not mean Lego is going to start selling on this site or anything
of that sort. Also, ADULT FAN OF LEGO (AFOL).

I'm a fan of lego.it s a good idea

Well, there would be so much to tell about this. But I think I will probably
just sit back and wait...

It's an Acronym.
As you could read in this topic: Adult Fan of Lego.
On the help pages of Bricklink are more of those acronyms.

I whould like to see a section where we can buy the plan from most of the previous
ideas
that were not commercialize by Lego. There is a lot of nice stuff they were made
a fail in nowhere.

That would be something nice for designer to get extra money and get a little
prestige to there creation.Instead of getting rip by chinese counterfit that
sale the set from unautorize creations .The MOC section could be expand to offer
more.

For sure Lego will not provide the parts for most of these sets.

Bricklink Do Lol!

This site have so much possibility...

If you can buy them, then so can any company wanting to buy a single copy of
the instructions to commercialise the set.

What you suggested won't stop unauthorised recreations, it will make it even
easier.

Plus currently anyone can sell their instructions afterwards if they do not reach
10K or pass review. In fact, it happened in the past here - the cuusoo brick
website set up in what appears to be a soft collaboration with bricklink MOC
shop after LEGO dropped cuusoo.

https://cuusoo.com/brands/cuusoo-brick#what-is-cuusoo-brick

heavily involving Hidaka Masao, whose grand piano didn't pass review when
reaching 10K.

Why do you care anyway? You are just saying it won't work, its a bad thing
to do that.
Just negative reply, you just don't want that site to change and died with
you.

That's not the way it work. The market is changing and we need to change with
it.We need innovation and in that context new ideals are necessary.

Don't come here and tell me just negative stuff.Keep it to yourself if you
can't come here with a better ideal.

Why not? Selling instructions won't stop clone brick brands stealing them.

A new “AFOL Designer Program” main topic just appeared on the other forum, http://forum.bricklink.com/
, the one that is (was until now?) dedicated to Stud.io (and the late Mosaick
(whose topic is closed)).

More teasing?

Would love to know what it is, this announcement is nothing more than a teaser
of a 2nd announcement.
Too bad most of the site was down around the time of the announcement, seems
to me, that once the Lego partnership is announced on the Lego page itself, this
might generate even more traffic. I hope the server capacity for Bricklink will
be increased before that, so the site will keep on working.

Since it is still not even 7:00am in California, I doubt any of the BrickLink

There’s been a few preparatory movements on the Stud.io forum yesterday ( http://forum.bricklink.com/
).

(A tiny bit of fun seeing the names / descriptions change.)
