This is a kind of a follow-up to this thread:

https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1085625

I have found similar issues with another Technic set: 8436, which I also own.
I bought it MISB, assembled it once, disassembled it and then stored it away
in a sealed bag since then.

First of all, the current BL inventory does not correspond with the brick count
found in the back of the first instruction book (all instructions available through
Swooshable have the same count, I checked it):

For part 6558 (Black Technic, Pin 3L with Friction Ridges Lengthwise), BL says
55, instructions say 56.
For part 2780 (Black Technic, Pin with Friction Ridges Lengthwise WITH Center
Slots), BL says 188, instructions say 183.

Part No: 6558 Name: Technic, Pin 3L with Friction Ridges
*
6558 Technic, Pin 3L with Friction Ridges
Parts: Technic, Pin

Part No: 2780 Name: Technic, Pin with Short Friction Ridges
*
2780 Technic, Pin with Short Friction Ridges
Parts: Technic, Pin

My instructions books have the same counts (56 and 183, see picture). All other
counts on BL are the same as in the instructions.

BUT, just like set 8285, the counts in the instructions (and BL, and Peeron)
do not reflect what was actually in my box. After counting up all the parts twice,
I'm left with 23 extra parts (see picture) while 4 parts are missing.

For part 6632 (Black Technic, Liftarm 1 x 3 Thin), I have 2 extra, i.e. there
were 8 in my box.
For part 32017 (Black Technic, Liftarm 1 x 5 Thin), I have 1 extra, i.e. there
were 3 in my box.
For part 32065 (Black Technic, Liftarm 1 x 7 Thin), I have 4 extra, i.e. there
were 8 in my box.
For part 32523 (Black Technic, Liftarm 1 x 3 Thick), I have 2 extra, i.e. there
were 11 in my box.
For part 32316 (Black Technic, Liftarm 1 x 5 Thick), I have 2 extra, i.e. there
were 4 in my box.
For part 32140 (Black Technic, Liftarm 2 x 4 L-Shape Thick), I have 2 extra,
i.e. there were 14 in my box.
For part 6558 (Black Technic, Pin 3L with Friction Ridges Lengthwise), I have
6 extra, i.e. there were 61 in my box. If 56 is actually the correct inventory
number (see above), then I have 5 extra.
For part 6632 (Dark Bluish Gray Technic, Liftarm 1 x 3 Thin), I have 1 extra,
i.e. there were 5 in my box.
For part 32073 (Light Bluish Gray Technic, Axle 5), I have 1 extra, i.e. there
were 19 in my box.
For part 32054 (Red Technic, Pin 3L with Friction Ridges Lengthwise and Stop
Bush), I have 2 extra, i.e. there were 11 in my box.

For part 2780 (Black Technic, Pin with Friction Ridges Lengthwise WITH Center
Slots), there were 187 in my box, i.e. I'm missing 4 (BL: 188+3 extra). If
183 is actually the correct inventory number (see above), then I have 4 extra,
one more than the current number of extras in the BL inventory.

So why do I have all those extra parts? I can't explain it, but they were
in my box. Did LEGO put them in because they were known to break easily? Did
LEGO have packaging issues at that time? I will probably never know.

I'll be doing an inventory update on the two counts that do not correspond
with the instruction counts (feel free to accept it fully, partially or reject
it), but the other leftover parts will stay here as documentation, in case someone
else at some point find a sealed set with the same contents as mine. I suspect
that if I did an update for these parts, it would be rejected. I'll not be
doing any detective work either. My set goes up for sale and I'll never see
it again.

This is the problem. Without your help, I cannot update the inventory since
I do not have access to the complete instructions for both versions of the set.

If I could compare the full instructions for the set, then I'd be happy to
change the set inventory to show the redesign (like I recently did for this set
and about 85 others based on work Russell had already completed):

Set No: 8043 Name: Motorized Excavator
*
8043-1 (Inv) Motorized Excavator
1123 Parts, 2010
Sets: Technic: Model: Construction

Without being able to compare set instructions for the different versions of
the set, though, an update is pointless because it may not be complete and the
reason for the redesign is unknown.

Will you please at least post the 7-digit instruction numbers printed on or inside
the instructions you have for the following two sets?

Set No: 8436 Name: Truck
*
8436-1 (Inv) Truck
1032 Parts, 2004
Sets: Technic: Model: Traffic

and

Set No: 8285 Name: Tow Truck
*
8285-1 (Inv) Tow Truck
1879 Parts, 2006
Sets: Technic: Model: Traffic

Knowing the number/version of the instructions will greatly help when we attempt
to find copies of the instructions for the redesigned sets - we'll know what
we're looking for. This information can be combined in the future with your
information about the parts included in the redesigned sets to update the inventories
properly.

For this set also there are discrepancies:

Official part count from set box: 1,877 parts
Rebrickable inventory: 1,877 parts

Brickset inventory: 1,778 parts
Brick Owl inventory: 1,789 parts
BrickLink inventory: 1,879 parts
Inventory of your set: 1,882 parts
Peeron inventory: 1,906 parts

I have added an inventory note to this set also.

Or were they used in alternate models but not in the main model? Have you checked
this aspect?

Ah, I think I understand you now. You're saying the instructions you have
are the same as other instructions which are available online.

The two problems you've discovered are: (a) the part counts printed in the
set instructions don't match the BL inventory for some parts and (b) the
actual set contents include numerous discrepancies from the official parts list
printed in the set instructions.

Does that sum it up?

Yes, that's exactly the point. My 8285 set matches Peeron (except for extras,
if I remember correctly), but not BL. My 8436 set matches neither BL nor BL.

As luck would have it, I have not managed to sell my sets yet, so I'm still
able to answer questions about them.

I'm 99% convinced that my bags contain the original contents of my sets because
at that time, I often bought a set, assembled it the same day, then disassembled
it and counted it up (against a list printed from Peeron) and put the set away
since then. I can't know if a small part happened to end up on the floor
during assembly or disassembly and therefore is missing from my set, but it's
unlikely, and I have no reason to believe that any parts were added to the sets
that didn't come with them - I did not have any other opened sets or parts
lying around. Noone but me has ever touched those sets and the bags haven't
been opened since. I have the original Peeron prints from that time and have
the same counts today as I did then.

Set 8285 instruction codes (front page): 4499315, 4499318, 4500150*, 4499336,
4499337, 4500153.
Set 8436 instruction codes (back page): 4257714, 4257310

*: BI at lego.com has no. 4516176.

I'm currently under a lot of stress, so I don't have the capacity to
count up the parts used during instructions for main/alternate builds, nor any
other brain intensive detective work, sorry. But I think I did check the two
sets for one or maybe two parts that were not consistent with the BL inventories
and concluded that for those parts, the alternate build did not need the extra
parts. But then, due to the stress, I may have overlooked certain uses of those
parts. My counts in the sets are correct, though. I counted twice, and as I wrote:
Counts match my old Peeron prints from back then.

Do ask if you have more questions.

/Jan

That should read: "My 8436 set matches neither BL nor Peeron."

Clearly there are serious issues with this set and its inventory. I have added

For this set (8436), I checked BL's inventory against the parts list in my
building instructions. All parts but the three I made ICRs for seem to correspond.
So I do not believe that the parts counts can be made to match for this set.
I don't have my original box, so I can't compare it to your image.

I don't believe that I parts list comparison for set 8285 for all parts.
I don't have the box for this set either.

I appreciate you bringing these issues to my attention. I don't believe
there could be this much variance with the inventory unless two or more versions
of the set exist.

For that reason I have decided to leave the inventory in its current state since
it likely represents an earlier version. However, your messages about your set
will remain accessible for three years and hopefully during that time the set
inventory can be corrected as necessary.

I (or someone) will need to make an effort to track down the earliest versions
of the set instructions and compare them with later versions to understand the
complete picture. And, ideally, a MISB set can be purchased of the version which
differs from yours and the exact contents compared with the instructions since
it seems that the contents don't match the parts list.

In other words, it will take time and money to get this inventory correct and
complete. The information you shared will undoubtedly help with that and, although
I'm not approving your requested changes, I do indeed appreciate you sharing
information about your set because it will help later on down the road.
