Right, I uploaded the light gray picture.
Maybe 'various color' ? As we do by the minifigs.

I'm confused by what you're asking here. Can you elucidate?

Robert

In this inventory we have the 'blue' and/or the 'light gray'
one.
But if we use 1 part for the inv. as 'various color'.

We you list it as part, you can select the right color like the minfig torso
https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=973&idColor=0#T=C&C=0
various color: (or no color)
https://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemInv.asp?P=973c02

As MISB set you don't know what you have inside, it can be blue or light
gray. (or maybe there is a color dot on the box as we seen on other sets at that
time)

I thought that's what you may be referring to. The reason torsos (and many
other part assemblies) are inventoried this way is so that they can be easily
used in multiple inventories.

I don't believe variable color inventories are appropriate for sets in most
cases. It could be done, yes, but I think having the alternate color for parts
is more appropriate for most sets (including this one).

You may notice that even sets which could include a larger variety of colors
are not traditionally given a single variable-color part inventory:

Set No: 222  Name: 1 x 1 Bricks
*
222-3 (Inv) 1 x 1 Bricks
62 Parts, 1961
Sets: Samsonite: Supplemental

And then sometimes you get only this (see inventory note):

Set No: 9962 Name: Flat Tiles
*
9962-1 (Inv) Flat Tiles
12 Parts, 1994
Sets: Educational & Dacta: Service Packs

  As MISB set you don't know what you have inside, it can be blue or light
gray.

Indeed that's true and the alternate part in the inventory will allow sellers
to part out the set depending on what color they find.

Speaking of pictures, it would be great if someone could upload a better photo
of the blue one.

At the time of this request, longtime member brasletty has a new set for sale
which also shows the light gray transformer (photo attached) The part in light
gray appears in no other set at this time, but multiple photos demonstrate its
existence and there are 7 listings of light gray for sale.

I have little doubt in the accuracy of this request and it has been approved.

About two weeks ago, I did some search and found few other auctions listing or
other photos of this gray transformer with the box of 740.
Otherwise, how did this gray transformer appear?

More important, please note that the blue era ended in 1979 and the gray era
began in 1980. However, it seems to me that the blue track-related parts had
already began to be replaced by their gray ones. For example, see
[p=bb93]
and
[p=bb141c01].
Their gray ones do not appear in any set. (Of course, I will work on them
)

Knowing this fact would make my future inventory requests much smoother.
