Dear BrickLink Sellers,

Mosaick's beta release is just around the corner! As we make the finishing touches on this awesome new tool, we want to share with you exactly what this feature is and how you can prepare for it's release.

What is Mosaick?
Mosaick is our brand new tool which enables the average AFOL or amateur designer to turn any image into a digital LEGO mosaic. Users can adjust settings like resolution & size to meet their individual preference and price constraints, then source the parts right on BrickLink! Designing and purchasing your own LEGO mosaic has never been easier.

Why is this important to me as a seller?
We expect Mosaick to bring in a host of new users to the community. Since we've made purchasing the parts for mosaics so simple, we expect sales to significantly increase (for typical mosaic pieces in particular). We want to make sure you are stocked up and ready for the release. With our combined effort, we expect this tool to be a great success!

Sounds great! When will this tool become available?
Open Beta release is currently scheduled for Monday, June 2, 2017. We will be premiering Mosaick to the public at the BrickWorld 2017 Convention in Chicago, Illinois. We're less than a month away, which is why stocking up on baseplates, plates, and tiles is super important right now!

What are the plate dimensions needed?
The following are the dimensions of the plates that are needed for the Mosaick creations in all colors:

1 x 1 1 x 2 1 x 3 1 x 6 1 x 8 1 x 10 1 x 12
2 x 2 2 x 3 2 x 4 2 x 6 2 x 8 2 x 10 2 x 12 2 x 14 2 x 16
3 x 3
4 x 4 4 x 6 4 x 8 4 x 10 4 x 12
6 x 6 6 x 8 6 x 10 6 x 12 6 x 14 6 x 16 6 x 24
8 x 8 8 x 11 8 x 16

What are the tile dimensions needed?
The following are the dimensions of the tiles that are needed for the Mosaick creations in all colors:

1 x 1 1 x 2 1 x 3 1 x 4 1 x 6 1 x 8
2 x 2 2 x 4
6 x 6
8 x 16

What are the baseplate dimensions needed?

The following are the baseplates that are needed for the Mosaick creations:

48 x 48 baseplate
32 x 32 baseplate
16 x 16 baseplate

Since the color of the baseplate is not important for these mosaics, our algorithms will always recommend the lowest priced baseplate(s) in the result.

Is there anything else I should know?
We'll keep you updated with any important information in the next few weeks. For now, you can ask questions and discuss Mosaick on its official forum topic.
We appreciate you using BrickLink to host your LEGO business and look forward to a fun and successful summer together.

Neat feature, I would love to be able to use the instant checkout feature to
purchase my LEGO.

When is instant checkout going to happen? Obviously it was not a top priority
(as mentioned in previous admin posts) if now two major releases (EASY BUY and
MOSAICK) are occurring before instant checkout.

I have said this before and will say it again, what you say and what you do is
important. If you don't do what you say then what you say becomes worthless.

I fail to see how you came to that conclusion. They could easily have multiple
groups working on different projects. I wouldn't expect anything less from
a real company.

Even major BL sellers have advised not to keep your eggs (bricks) all in one
basket. BL seems to be trying to do just that or at least to the point that
new software might draw in much more customers/revenue.

I reasonably confident that instant checkout is at the top of their list. It's
one of the major drawbacks to this site that's holding it back from drawing
in customers that expect that feature.

Obviously it was not a top priority

(as mentioned in previous admin posts) if now two major releases (EASY BUY and
MOSAICK) are occurring before instant checkout.

This has been discussed for over 14 months, top priorities, semi-important priorities,
or even "at the top of their list" shouldn't take this long.

A work for a real company and taking this long to complete a project "at the
top of (my) list" wouldn't be acceptable. I would have a hard time explaining
to my boss why I can't get a project completed when every other comparable
company offers that feature.

Have you actually done this with an international website or are you just speculating
how long it should take with unknown variables?

We also don't know who this group is or their skill levels? I remember seeing
a picture of Jaclyn early on and she looked to be fresh out of college age, so
maybe they tend to hire recent graduates and give them a chance to learn and
hone new skills. Too many unknowns, I would say.

I have never programmed a website for international shipping, however I would
guess there are 100,000+ websites that do international shipping with instant
checkout.

Most of this reply is full of excuses as to why it isn't done or questions
the experience of BrickLink's staff. It doesn't discredit my opinion.
If instant checkout was a top priority they would hire the proper staff to complete
the task or outsource the task.

Hi David, thanks for catching that! So 1 x 4 plates are allowed, and I accidentally
forgot to add that in the grid. Apologies for the error!

And you assume we'll still consider BL being a professional website with
professional developpers and 'project managers'
Before you 'launch' something you 'make sure', otherwise you'll
just be considered a 'noob' working on a website that hosts over +10.000
sellers and +half a million potential buyers and that makes it quite 'not
very professional'.
Thank you!

Mosaic Makers programs to Legoaizer a picture into a mosaic already exist.
Together with Stud.Io Bricklink re-invents another already existing program.

A shortage on tiles and plates leads to higher prices for everyone.

Please prioritise improving the Buy function algorithm and fixing bugs.

Thank you Team.

Bottomline: BL is 're-inventing' things that already exist, yet they
fail to re-invent the most crucial thing that is needed to have this site walk
into the next decade: Autocheckout.
BRICKOWL (and yes I shout it out with a blink) is now 4 years old, it's 'functional'
progress (by 1 man mainly) is higher then the progress BL has made in that same
period (**sigh**): and just to be clear: nobody asked for a chinese translation,
nobody asked a stud.io feature or a 'MOC' shop or a Mosaic feature or
many more fancy 'layout' improvements. I'm aboslutely not against
any progress and improvement, netither aginst new features, but I'm against
setting up 'new' things while 'key features' that have been asked
for half a decade are 'still' missing... Sure several teams can work
on new stuff at the ssame time, but not at the cost of neglecting 'long time
expected' features.

Does LEGO still make all the required baseplate sizes?

Does the program check if the required parts were ever released (used in an inventory)

Is is possible to filter the colors used (for example using medium azure instead
of sky blue and maersk blue because that is probably a lot cheaper)?

Thank you for updating me on the forum protocols. My revised message is as follows:

So LEGO still manufactures the following baseplates:

- 48 x 48 gray baseplate
- 32 x 32 green baseplate
- 32 x 32 sand baseplate

Currently it's not possible to filter by color, as the algorithm will always
choose the cheapest available baseplate. However you can "Add to My Baseplate"
the Mosaick result, and adjust the parts list before you add to cart.

Thanks for the excellent questions!

Thank you for updating me on the forum protocols.

Just to be clear, this was not meant to be snarky etc in any way. There is a
good reason for not allowing links to offsite LEGO sales - they have the potential
of sales lost for BL. And I am sure you don't want that to happen.

Thanks for your post and your efforts!

So LEGO still manufactures the following baseplates:

- 48 x 48 gray baseplate: [url to tlg]
- 32 x 32 green baseplate: [url to tlg]
- 32 x 32 sand baseplate: [url to tlg]

Currently it's not possible to filter by color, as the algorithm will always
choose the cheapest available baseplate. However you can "Add to My Baseplate"
the Mosaick result, and adjust the parts list before you add to cart.

I thought LEGO stopped making the original Green 32x32 baseplates and now do
them in Bright Green instead....

Assembly Square is a current production set and contains the green ones.

- BrickLink Team

In my personal opinion, most Mosaics are very boring, but there are a few building
styles that blew my mind. Will you be adding different building styles?

For example
- studs forward (like the current example image)

- studs up (using the side of the bricks and/or plates)

https://www.flickr.com/photos/10321180@N08/4219273654/

- lenticular dual image

https://www.flickr.com/photos/gaincomposure/23536475071/

- using shadow casting panels

- using cheese slopes
https://mosaicbricks.blogspot.nl/2012/06/cheese-slope-mosaics-tutorial.html
https://www.flickr.com/photos/eilonwy77/albums

- using printed parts

- using different part shapes

To keep people interested and to offer something more than the other LEGO mosaic
programmes, I think it needs to add something more than just simple square pixels.

My concern with these releases, MOC Shop, Stud.io and now Mosaick is that they
have potential to draw in new customers BUT they are coming to a site with a
serious failing, they can't check-out. Who's to say that they will ever
come back if or when Instant Check-out is finally implemented.

First impressions are important and new customers coming to a functionally out-dated
site drawn in by these "new" developments may not come back again. Thousands
of lost opportunities....

I also wonder how many people will want their mosaic after they see how much
their 75 x 75 stud (60 x 60 cm) mosaic costs exactly...

I think that any one of those mosaic styles would get equally boring if there's
a software that designs it for you. Those mosaics may have been brilliant the
first time, but (like basic studs-up mosaics) it's now been done before,
and having an automatic mosaic generator just won't give the same effect
as a brand-new technique innovation would.

That is true, but at least it would mean that the BL version does something the
other generators do not. Now it is just another copy of a common programme.

Yes, the only thing MOSAICK could bring is the link to the catalogue: only existing
parts or only cheap parts.
And we know nothing about that. I guess they reserve the details for the convention.

We have a phrase in Scotland that describes the current situation on BL:

Sigh...

As a seller I can tell you that plates and tiles already sell very well. This
isn't going to motivate sellers.

And there are already several programs available to create LEGO mosaics.

I keep waiting for the announcement that Bricklink is going to stop wasting its
time on these pet projects and focus on their core business.

  Sigh...

As a seller I can tell you that plates and tiles already sell very well. This
isn't going to motivate sellers.

And there are already several programs available to create LEGO mosaics.

I keep waiting for the announcement that Bricklink is going to stop wasting its
time on these pet projects and focus on their core business.

I agree.. I just had someone buy most of my 1x1, 1x2, 1x3 plates in one shot..
they sell well. I need a way to get rid of the parts that don't move at all.

Very cool! Will there be a tool to choose how many colors an image gets subdivided
into, and also an option to exclude / include specific colors at the creator's
whim?

Experienced mosaic builders recommend using bricks instead of plates to create
a mosaic. They're easier to manipulate even if they don't have the full
variety that plates do.

But good start. Please expand mosaick(C)(R)TM to include the choice to build
with bricks or plates.

As others have said, this Model T has enough pinstripes. Please focus on an instant
checkout feature.

Thanks,

Dag

Agreed. I was wondering why bricks aren't included in the part options,
too.

Bricks also fall off less when the mosaic is hung vertically, and some people
use them in combination with 1x and 2x plates to give a more 3D texture too.

Thank you for the question, and yes there will be instructions to build it that
will be provided in the Mosaick feature as well as after you save it to "My Baseplate".
Let me know if you have any additional questions!

Just to give us an idea - using BrickLink Mosaick - what is the lowest cost
(shipping to USA) to piece together the Mona Lisa mosaic you illustrated your

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure they never made it that far in their testing. If they had,
they would have noticed that the program is choosing colors that LEGO hasn't
produced in decades.

On the one hand, I'm glad BL seems to have forgotten Mosaick already and
is hopefully putting more effort into useful tools such as auto checkout.

On the other hand, it's disappointing that they seem to have learned nothing
from the failure of MOC shop.

Hi,
This should be an opt in or opt out service for sellers. I will be opting out
by advising buyers they will have their order cancelled and be black listed if
they buy tiles or such for their pictures and further I will degrade my stock
so that my store does not have many of any part.

This will no doubt hurt my business, but someone needs to keep stock for people
who want parts for other reasons....

Also how do I sell hard to sell parts along side easy to sell parts, when the
common parts are being bought for pictures? Buyers come to stores for two reasons
or a combination of - either price or the selection of parts. If my selection
of parts is not there I have to be cheap - freight is too expensive for customers
to buy a little here and little there without an incentive.

Please consider that not all stores can accept or handle the loss of huge quantities
of particular parts or are able to sustain the loss, or have the capital to replace
such stock quickly! All that will happen is that stores will squabble over the
available items and the parts will become expensive - but I suppose when I restock
from Lego it pushes the price up or from another store BL can profit in the latter,
i.e. getting fees for selling the same part twice or more and the former because
the prices are higher and fees are based on percentiles.....

If a store wishes to opt in, then they can source their parts from Lego or from
part outs as they please....and leave the rest of us in peace to look after the
general community - the MOC or kit/set builder!

Thank you,
Kind regards,
Dave

My simple question to you is this: What gives some LEGO builds more virtue than
others?

Mosaick seems to give builders and artists a tool to plan out a graphic design
and a direct link to the store(s) selling those pieces. What buyers use the pieces
for from my store is entirely their concern. I would not cancel a sale based
on the merit of the build they are working on.

Thank you,
Kind regards,
Dave

Because you can't run a store without plates. If the common plates are bought
out, and only bought out, what are we supposed to do with the other 80% of the
set's bricks? The wanted list algorithm won't send buyers to you. Mosaic
builders only buy the plates, leaving the other pieces stuck in limbo.

Looks like you are a new seller here. Trust me this is not a new issue. Mosaick
won't change the fact that most people build with bricks and plates, not
wedges and windscreens.

My thinking too. I've even had buyers tell me they're building mosaics
and wanting to make sure I wouldn't be upset if they bought up a bunch of
plates: my answer was that if I didn't want to sell them I wouldn't have
listed them. I'll always be able to restock my plates with a little careful
consideration about what I part out.

Are people really complaining about making sales? I've heard it all now.
There is a pretty simple solution on what to do if your stock gets low.....

If you offer a variety of different parts in different colors, people will shop
at your store. I don't think I have very many new plates. I have hardly any
"used" plates. Haven't really listed any used plates in years. Have a few
Menards 50 gallon leaf bags full of plates in the basement that I have just not
felt like going through. Variety, variety, variety. That would be my advice to
anyone worrying about running out of plates and tiles.

- BrickLink Team

Two thoughts:

1). I think this is a pretty cool idea.
2). The Bricklink forum community is an extremely hard group to please.

If 2 dozen of people feel they do not need to take in consideration the over
half a million users, then yes, that's exactly what they'll generate
as 'feeling' amongst the more 'vocal' users (particulary on this
forum) , just the way it is, but that doesn't mean that a) those users represent
the less vocal users in any way and b) those users do not represent the general
feeling of users who never 'speak up' either.

I think it's cool too. I see a lot of people complaining about other things
in this thread which is kinda odd, it's like a thread jacking. And the "this
solution exists other places" one but this sounds simpler and easier to obtain,
on the site you can buy from! Makes sense to me.

The other side of it is that Bricklink is really bad at rolling out change, sometimes
announcing it the day before and totally changing things to the point of losing
large functionality. They really need a sandbox site where you can do things
like test buy from yourself, and see the new features before rollout. For a
site where there are people making a living from it they really need to be more
careful. But as far as this post, I'm a fan!

They did that before The Big Change of last June.
Some people went to see and came back with questions, bug reports, and a lot
of fears.
Very few questions were answered (turning the others into more fears).
Very few bugs were considered.
No fears were assuaged.

  Dear BrickLink Sellers,
Mosaick's beta release is just around the corner!

In 2017, we need:

* At least Buyer's buttons and interface in THEIR (major) languages (not
Catalog, too complicated for now). It's a Worldwide site for God's Sake!

* A full instant Checkout (for 80% of orders) - PayPal, Stripe, Crypto-Currencies?,
etc.

* An usable BrickLink on smartphones, tablets etc.

* Some site's Stats - the last ones are 2013?
Please favor transparency.
More Stats give power to sellers, to BrickLink, to buyers.

* Postal addresses in a *correct* International format, per Country - see:
http://www.upu.int/en/activities/addressing/postal-addressing-systems-in-member-countries.html

* French Regions corrected - they have changed months/year ago?

* Please note MANY Countries should *NOT* show a Region in their Postal address,
like in France (and DE, NL, BE... I think)

* A simple way to help for Catalog - like to change the weight of an item, a
simple text box, input the weight submit - right now Catalog changes, ermm...

* Orders that are CLOSED, or the buyer *chooses* to leave it opened, but not
"always opened" just right now - in short something that people of all cultures
understand.

* Please send an e-mail to *every* member (except if they've denied it) for
ANY signifiant change of the site.
I don't have Stats (see above), but I guess around 2% of your members read
the Forum?

* Please have an Admin that replies at least by "Yes/No/Who cares" to e-mails
sent (BTW, thanks Jaclyn, she's top!)

etc.

Apart this - Thanks all for the Mosaick.

Agreed on everything you said.
BL is putting the cart before the horse: the right order is to make the site
welcoming to new buyers before making them come, or they will be one-time buyers
or worse, one-time visitors.

About formatting addresses and France’s regions, I posted a bug report January
4th 2016 (France’s regions have changed the 1st, though the names weren’t definive
before October).
(I only gave links like yours, to how international addresses should be formatted.
Maybe I should have added links to the multiple free libraries that do that for
you….)

I inquired about it February 12th 2017: it appears the bug had been closed, for
unknown reasons, but I was promised it was worked on.

March 17th, I got an update about the bug being “prioritized and assigned,” though
its priority must be low because “Unfortunately, there are some other urgent
issues that need to be addressed first.” (Which I believe: at the time, there
were still bugs with Wanted List store sorting….)

And, lo and behold, it’s even been added to the roadmap.

So it’s worked upon.
It’s just around the corner.
The next corner after auto checkout….

This has to be a calendar error.

Most recently, I've seen this updated to say "Monday, June 5, 2017". But
Monday June 5 is here, and I'm wondering if there's any update.

48 x 48 baseplate
32 x 32 baseplate

Ok, it's bin a while since the last post about this new thing.

I've been active in the beta forum with some input to improve the mazaick.
Posted suggestions along with other people.

I really want yo use the mozaick and that is why i gave the suggestions to improve
it.

But there are no changes made to it till now.......
Worse is that we get no reply at all from the people behind it in the beta forum......

So bricklink, if you want this to be a succes the act now or be honost enough
to openly cancel the thing.
At least say something in the beta forum so we know its been read......

A very disappointed bricklink member.....

Welcome to BrickLink, where admins rarely answer questions, especially after
having dropped some news.

(They can’t answer and follow each and every post but they could at least follow
up on their own posts.)

I recognise that feeling. Any acknowledgement that our feedback was read would
have been great.

When they post a news message about a beta test I assume they really want to
receive feedback. But when we give it we only get silence in return. That is
not motivating anyone to do further testing or to provide more suggestions to
make BrickLink better.

It really seems like feedback is not appreciated, maybe they just want to hear
that they did a great job. It does not work like that. I appreciate the effort,
but as it currently is, the Mosaic is nearly useless. With the simple (and feasible)
suggestions implemented, it could become a nice addition to BrickLink.
