I was just going to ask about that discrepancy!

(Just finished building mine and checking alternates and extras.)

I am currently building a list of all sets with multiple instructions:

http://brickset.com/sets/list-18333

and trying to get BrickLink as correct as possible in the process. For this set
I haven't gone through the entire parts list yet to see if anything else
is different, so if you notice more discrepancies, please let me know. Which
version do you have?

Cool.
If you’re wondering, I made the request to add the alternate version of

Set No: 21303  Name: WALL-E
*
21303-1 (Inv) WALL-E
677 Parts, 2015
Sets: LEGO Ideas (CUUSOO): WALL-E
I think I managed to not mess it up

*
72454 Slope, Inverted 45 4 x 4 Double with 2 Holes
Parts: Slope, Inverted

I’ve the “new” one, with holes and 10 white 2x4 plates. The set was bought in
december (took me time to find time to build it ).

I only noticed that all alternates are the more recent (already listed) variants.
That is, no newer variants. E.g., all¹ jumpers are

Part No: 3794b Name: Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with 1 Stud with Groove (Jumper)
*
3794b Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with 1 Stud with Groove (Jumper)
Parts: Plate, Modified
, not

Part No: 15573 Name: Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with 1 Stud with Groove and Bottom Stud Holder (Jumper)
*
15573 Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with 1 Stud with Groove and Bottom Stud Holder (Jumper)
Parts: Plate, Modified

¹ Well, except tan jumpers: I’ve 88

Part No: 3794 Name: Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with 1 Stud, Jumper (Undetermined Type)
*
3794 Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with 1 Stud, Jumper (Undetermined Type)
Parts: Plate, Modified
and 22

Part No: 3794b Name: Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with 1 Stud with Groove (Jumper)
*
3794b Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with 1 Stud with Groove (Jumper)
Parts: Plate, Modified
.

As for the instructions, I don’t really understand what’s the function of the
2 medium blue 1x2 plates on top of the new white 2x4 (which fills the holes I
guess). Were they used instead of the 2x4 under the 1x2 log brick and 1x1 brick
with stud and then were moved out of the way?
Still, nice that they didn’t remove them

Yes, there are only a handful of people who have accounted for an alternate version
successfully. Typically only part of the differences are discovered, and then
there is the question of accurate counting. On complicated inventories like those
I usually have to fill out a chart to keep everything straight.

One of the other things that sometimes happens is that TLG will send out a correction
sheet with a pack of parts. But then when the set itself is corrected in the
factory, there will be further changes. In the case of Wall-E, though, one of
the parts in the correction pack is apparently not used in the later version
of the set:

Part No: 3713 Name: Technic Bush
*
3713 Technic Bush
Parts: Technic
I don't have access to the instructions for the supplement pack, so I can't
make a direct comparison, but that does seem a bit unusual.

See image below. I believe they retained them so as not to have to change the
official piece count for the set. As long as TLG adds to the total there would
be no false advertising, but if 16 Medium Blue plates had been replaced by 8
White plates, the piece count would drop by eight.

I did it after having built it (I always check extras after building;
I’m not the sort-the-parts-first type ), so I mainly used the inventory at
the end of the instructions, and lots of scribbles on a piece of paper.

Yes, strange. And I don’t see where that part could go….

Ah yes, the brick count, I tend to forget about it as it’s usually not on my
boxes (it’s on the big Creator ones though).
But maybe there’s also the packing, how parts are put in the bags, that TLG didn’t
want to change too much?
Their packing process remains a mystery to me

Yes, strange. And I don’t see where that part could go….

I just looked at the standard old and new instructions more closely and it looks
like there is a 5th one in the new neck. The other 4 are used on pages 62, 64,
70, and 72 of both instructions. Does your page 82 look like one of the ones
below? (see attached images)

The parts list of the new instructions also shows 5 spacers. I don't know
why I didn't see this before. This is one case where I *have* already compared
the parts lists - must have been a late night!

I sometimes forget that EU Lego packaging does not normally show a piece count.

Dang! You’re right!
I (should¹) have 6 of them (5 + 1 extra).
Maybe I shouldn’t combine BL’s regular and extras in my inventory database before
I check if I have all the extras

¹ I’m not 100% sure because, even if fortunately, I hadn’t yet put all my extras
in my stock but, unfortunately, they are mixed with other not-stocked-yet extras….

I pulled together a chart just to confirm everything (see first image below).
There are 42 parts "replaced" by 41 parts, so that reduces the official piece
count by 1.

And sure enough, TLG released another box with a different count. So there is
a 677 count for the first release, and 676 for the late version (see images 2
and 3). The brick separator boosts the current regular inventory up to 677.

No count on the European box. No text either, just “12+ | 21303.” (Many languages
on the back (how Ideas work) and even more on the top (choking hazard) though.)
