Store: A brick too far.
Please make changes to the following inventory:

Set No: 355 Name: Town Center Set with Roadways
*
355-1 (Inv) Town Center Set with Roadways
314 Parts, 1972
Sets: LEGOLAND: Building

* Add 1 Part 3127 Red Hook, Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with Crane Hook Left (Alternate) (match ID 8)
* Change 1 Part Red 3127b Hook, Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with Crane Hook Right {match ID 0 to 8}

Comments from Submitter:
I've looked at two complete sets (one of which was in a box, and the other one was once bought by me back in 1974), and both have the left hook. I suppost left/right hooks were included in this era depending on stock.

I have encountered similar alternations on set 128-2 and set 643-2, also both
from the early 70's. Suggest left/right hooks are included on these sets
as alternate options.

The reason why a particular version of hook is used in an old inventory like
this one is because of the instructions. It's the same with doors, signs,
trees, etc.

Sometimes a part variation was split after an inventory was submitted and the
most common variant (as perceived at the time) was assigned to the original entry.
So in those cases, an inventory may end up in conflict with the instructions.
But by and large, the instructions were *the* source for older inventories, not
actual set contents.

It is quite likely that many sets came with both variants, but I don't feel
comfortable adding variants indiscriminately to inventories, though. Please only
add them if you are reasonably sure your source is original.

But the question of source begs the question - why retain a variant (in this
case the right hook) if the source is unreliable?

Hello Russel,

I agree that adding variants should not be done willy-nilly. My main area of
(Lego) expertise is in early 70's sets, and every now and then I find myself
buying a batch of 'childhood Lego' from someone who obviously wasn't
that into Lego: the bricks are in great shape and I can easily see which sets
the parts are from and they all seem to be complete, but when I put them together
I end up with one right hook missing and an extra left hook, or I have a winch
with the wrong color drum, or suddenly an inverted slope doesn't have a round
pin... that's not really proof obviously, more an educated guess/gut feeling
