As I work on building my Classic Space collection, I'm trying to determine
which parts with variants are worth worrying about.

I'm stuck on the 8x4 wing. Some have an Underside Stud Notch, and some do
not. Are there any models where it really matters which wing you use?

Sellers often list these incorrectly, so I'm having a hell of a time collecting
the right number of pairs in the right colors

I'm going to confuse the issue a little more.
I pulled out my extras of these parts. I have 8 yellow, 4 right and 4 left.
These came from 2 sets that my son had of

.
All 4 of the right wings have no notch while all 4 of the left ones do have the
notch. The right wings have an R in them, but no part number. The left wings
have an L and the part number 3933.

The gray, blue, black, and white ones I have are all a mix of both with and without
notch. Over the years these have been mixed from one set to another, so I have
no way of knowing to which year they belong.

If anyone has a way of taking pictures of these, please PM me with an address
and I will mail them to you for photos for the catalog.

Hi Thea

Yes, I bought a year ago a large lot with sets from the '90s.
Also some sets with these wings and yes the old and the newer type was onboard.
There was no input from someone else, all original parts from that timeline.

Stefaan

Hi Stefaan,
I thought it was interesting about the yellow ones because the only sets they
came in were from one year, 1990. So I could tell for sure that in 1990, TLG
was still using parts from the old molds for the right side.

The Release Year for sets in the catalog is only the first year that sets appeared,
and it would be quite unusual for a standard issue Technic set like this to only
appear for a year. As it is, this set was advertised in catalogs from 1990-1993,
so a full 4 years. When you pair this information with what Biodreamer said here;
http://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=927905

...you can start to get a clearer picture of when the transition really took
place. I would venture to say that in 1990, all wings were still the type without
notches.

Do you remember the year your son got these sets?

Russell

This is Paul typing for Thea, who injured her right hand swatting at a flying
insect over the weekend.

As mentioned before by Thea, our son and his friend mixed and matched these wings
in the Space Sets.

However, our Black Seas Barracuda was built in 1989, dis-assembled in 1993, and
parts were placed in the original box for the move back to the USA. It was re-built
in 1994 for a display at the middle school our son attended. It was dis-assembled
for cleaning and rebuilt again in 2009. That year it was part of a display in
our garage for Halloween. We are certain that these are the original black wings
used in

They have no notches on either side.

We also looked at

6286-1 (Inv) Skull's Eye Schooner
878 Parts, 9 Minifigures, 1993

This had black, gray, and white wings. All left
wings have the notches. All right wings do not have notches.

Further searching led to the discovery of a bag of left and right wings that
were part of a lot purchased on e-bay around 2005. There were 2 pairs of yellow
wings in the bag. One pair had no notches on either side, while the other pair
had notches on both sides. These two pairs combined with the 4 pairs from our
son's Technic sets, leads us to believe that sometime during the production
of the yellow wings was when the molds changed. This would also account for
the mis-matches in Skull's Eye Schooner.

Several things we noticed along the way.

The instructions for

show the notches quite clearly in the blue

Part No: 4475 Name: Wedge, Plate 8 x 8 with 4 x 4 Cutout
*
4475 Wedge, Plate 8 x 8 with 4 x 4 Cutout
Parts: Wedge, Plate
When looking for any examples in the classic space instructions, we couldn't
find any 3933/3934 wings showing the notches.

It seems that all the way through the Skull's Eye Schooner, the models were
designed in such a way that the stud notch was not needed in the main build.
When the build required the notch, parts 4475 or

were used.

Left wings appear in 123 sets, while right wings are only in 121 sets.

There are 9 left and only 7right wings in

Looking at all this brought back many wonderful memories.
