Hi,

it would be very helpful if there would be a link directly to the catalog entry
of an item/set when browsing an item/set in any store. This way, you don't
need to go all the way back to the catalog page and manually search for it or
browse your way to the entry.

As far as I know this is now not possible (or I have completely missed it for
years).

It's an option that sellers can choose to enable or disable for their stores.
Most sellers keep it disabled to discourage buyers from shopping elsewhere

Cool, I didn't know that. Where's the option located?

I thought it did? having tried it now I'm not sure. I'll look further.

It doesn't. It allows the seller to have a link to the price guide, from
the inventory view (not from within the store).

There isn't an option for what the original post was describing.

It's intended to work this way. Use two Windows.
In brick and mortar stores you can't compare prices of the competition too.

Yes,
They really need this.

IF BL had a competitor, all other things equal, but the competitor had this feature,
I would use the competitor.
I have this thought almost every time I am shopping on BL.

However,
Not having this feature has allowed me to exercise my memory skills more often,
as I try to remember the item number (in my head) as I navigate back to the catalog.
I suppose this is good exercise for my brain.

Incidentally... while they may not yet be at an "all other things equal" status,
BL's main competitor DOES have this feature.

It isn't something that is currently supported. I agree that it should be,
with one caveat: the link should open in a pop-up window. Here's why: if
a new user is browsing in my store, there shouldn't be a significant risk
that they accidentally navigate away. Having catalog links that cause the buyer
to meave the store would do that.

But pop-ups, that allow them to see the price and availability of my items in
other stores, that's fine. The easier it is to get intormation, the better
informed all buyers will be, which is great for the market as a whole.

Great suggestion.

Basically, the reason this has never been allowed, is that it will likely drive
prices down. While that might sound good at first, it isn't all that good
for sellers, and if sellers go away, well, what's left...buyers with nothing
to buy. I'm not dead-set against this, but if it does reduce the amount of
sellers here, less competition is not a good thing for this site.

Interesting. I am not certain that I see how this would drive down prices. Buyers
who are very price-oriented already do comparison shopping. Really, what puts
the most downward pressure on prices is the Price Guide itself.

Yes, it does, I agree. Ebay doesn't offer the kind of price guide that BL
offers. Honestly, I am not all that familiar with BO, but the times I've
gone there, I come away frustrated. I have an account, but have yet to buy there,
or sell for that matter, so I can't really judge. I will say this, the prices
on Ebay are usually quite a bit higher than here. So, what your are saying is
probably true. Someone today even stated that their profits are higher on BO,
so that pretty much backs you up. As far as whether the link to the catalog would
reduce prices further, that is just a guess, but would not be good if it did,
IMO.

So BO does not have a price guide like BL? Hm. I wonder how much BO pricing depends
on the BL price guide then, seeing as apparently quite a few sellers use sync
software to manage one inventory showing on both sites.

There is a price history there. It's basically the same as the summaries
at the top of the Price Guide pages on BrickLink. It lists how many times an
item sold in the last 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years, and the average, maximum,
and minimum price. It does not list every individual sale and listing the was
that BL does.

Interesting, thank you. so, for a set, for example, there is no differential
for a used complete set, and a used partial set? If that is true, their price
guide is more broken than BLs guide. Anyway, I stand behind the age-old belief
that linking to the price guide could be bad, in the long run. I'm not gonna
ask for proof otherwise, as obviously, both opinions are just that, opinions
.

If I'm not mistaken, any sale of a set tagged as "incomplete" does not affect
the BO price history.

My personal opinion is that seeing the sale prices of incomplete sets is worthless
anyway (unless you can see what was missing).

This suggestions has come up several times in the past - almost annually. And
every time I and many others vote against it.

As a seller I want to keep customers in my shop so they can place an order. I
do not want to make it easy for them to leave, nor do I want to give them links
that could take them somewhere else. It is not my job to tell my customers if
they can get a better deal from any of my competitors, nor do I want to help
make that comparison easier for them - at least not while they are in my shop.
Buyers should do this on their own without expecting me to make it easier for
them. There are very few retailers in the real world that will give you an in-store
tool to immediately check the prices of all their competitors on everything they
sell. So why is it expected here?

Sure, many buyers can already compare prices by manually opening several windows.
But many don't bother doing this. Even I find opening multiple windows and
comparing the prices of each item slow and cumbersome. So many times I just shop
by gut feeling - I can recognize when a price is lower than average and good
enough for me, even if it isn't the cheapest.

And, like Darren says, I believe this tool would only place even more downward
pressure on prices. It is hard enough to make a decent profit here. Make it even
more difficult and sellers will start leaving.

That being said, this tool - if implemented - might actually be beneficial to
me and result in more orders for me (in the short-term) because I have some of
the lowest prices on BrickLink. However, I don't believe it is good for BrickLink.
And, in the long-term, it would probably result in lower profits for me as more
sellers try to undercut my prices.
