Comments from Submitter:
Due to reported variations in parts I did a short investigation. I have instructions with 877040 number, which seems to be initial release as later instructions numbered 877166 have slightly different parts (added here as alternate). It is obvious that later instruction is an improved version - model has been reviewed with a bit sturdier assembly and additional pictures helping during assembly. The funny thing is that photos on newer BI show initial version, without modifications included in BI.

Please add a note to set:
Set with instructions numbered 877040 is initial version
Set with instructions numbered 877166 is revised version (alternative parts)

Hey there

Do you know if there are some clues on the box (box design, some numbering?)
also differ, depending on the insides?

the one I got has
Instructions #877166
EAN code on box 5 702010 988587

Box design itself seems to be no different than BL stock image

Hi
Can't help because don't have the set but maybe you can check the box
number (like the instructions have boxes also a n°)

Stefaan

Seems like boxes of this period dont come with box numbers yet, at least not
in the same way that today's sets do.

Hey-hey!

Well, EAN code is the same on my box. The only other numbers I have:
0624 is printed on one of the seals;
1193 and 168361 are on flaps on opposite sides of a box.

By the looks of photos on revised BI TLG didn't bother with shooting model
again.

Well, EAN code is the same on my box. The only other numbers I have:
0624 is printed on one of the seals;

Left-hand seal 0925
Right-hand seal 0525

  1193 and 168361 are on flaps on opposite sides of a box.

Havent thought of looking inside the box
1094 and 168367 here
But the best ones are the ones that one can see on an unopened box Sadly,
seems like non to be had in this case.

  By the looks of photos on revised BI TLG didn't bother with shooting model

A side-note. The date on the sticker sheet is 1993, but the set released in 1994.
I check with LT catalog - it's true that this was released in 1994 for local
market.

I know that parts may often have much earlier year markings than their first
releases in a set, and reasons are obvious.

How common is this for sticker sheets? Never noticed this earlier.. but I dont
think I ever bothered to check this either

Hi

first: yes at that time, the n° is inside the box on flap(s) (only the larger
n°)
also the inside boxes have n°, also sets with outside flaps etc...

second: there are more sets with a different date for instructions/boxes and
stickersheets.

Thanks for the detailed presentation, especially the print numbers on the instructions.
This is the kind of information we are wanting to archive in these threads.

Don't be surprised by the box image. I have seen cases where the image was
changed, but in many (if not most) they didn't reshoot the photo. This is
especially true of secondary images.

If this is the wrong place i apologise;

for set 8858-1 I have the updated instruction book, but going through the brick
link list i noticed two parts that are not noted in the instruction book, and
are not in my set. They are noted as alternate (updated model) but i can't
seem to find another version of the booklet with those pieces included;

Certainly no need for stress.

A lot of people have trouble reading inventories that represent more than one
version of a set. We recognize this has more to do with the current inventory
system than users' perceptive abilities.

The easiest approach is to take all the parts in the regular section with a given
match ID (in this case "1") and replace them with all the parts in the alternate
section with the same match ID.

When a given match ID is present on more than a single line within an inventory
section, there is no one-to-one correspondence between parts as people normally
assume when dealing with common variants, etc.
