| To all of you Bircklinkers out there...
And especially the administrators and frequent forum posters.
Bricklink is a wonderful place where we all can enjoy our very different passions
of LEGO. We all enjoy being here, otherwise we would be some where else....
The bricklink community is very committed, and has very strong opinions about
the site that they helped to build and populate.
Times are changing, also in Bricklink, and imho its necessary, to keep BL in
the lead. For everybody's benefit.
The new owners hopefully understand that the users of BL are a very powerful
tool, that put in use the right way can be of great benefit for the site.
But my concern right now is that the very long and passionate forum treads are
harming the reputation of the site, scaring away newcomers.
The debate in the forum are necessary and understandable. But imho they are mostly
for admins and sellers, and not a benefit for the common buyer.
So this is my proposal:
Lets have a closed forum for sellers and admins, where the details of the BL
maschine room can be debated. And a forum for everybody where we can discuss
the joy of lego, help newbies and so on.

I don't like the idea. Firstly, the "buyer only" population will lose representation
in the discussions. There are not a tremendous number of high volume, buyer
only members. But the vocal ones offer a good perspective focused solely on
the buying experience (rather than a balanced buyer/seller perspective).
Secondly, there have been debated and heated threads in the past. BrickLink
has grown through all of it. (Maybe not as fast as possible, but clearly not
suffering much for it.)

I think a members only forum would be better. That way the general public can't
see what we post until they join.

I understand where this is coming from, but I can't support it.
First of all, when I was a buyer, I found the forum to be very educational on
numerous levels. I learned everything I needed to know about being a seller here
from those lively discussions.
Instead, I depend on all forum posters to show decorum in their postings. And
they do, almost all of the time. This is a very polite forum, even if there
are moments of outrage and catastrophizing at times. Perhaps the level of decorm
we do experience is based on the knowledge that buyers and visitors are reading.
As a seller, I don't think I would enjoy reading a forum of unrestrained,
no-holds-barred seller demagoguery.
I really hope that the recent trend of information sharing by admins will be
the best means to help tone down the more recent anxiety and passion driven posts.

| Buyer only here. I would vote no.
No representation as someone previously said.
It would give the appearance of hiding something.
The benefit is that all those threads are so darn entertaining. Everyone has
an agenda and it is interesting to see what they are. My agenda is to buy Lego
when I can.

| I disagree here. Sellers asking for advice. Maybe a lot of buyers r also looking
at this to. As they maybe thinking of joining and reading a lot of this and it
may bring in some new sellers. Also may help them understand how sellers work.
And how some try there very best to make this a better place. I donno every

| Less than 1/10th of 1% of the BrickLink membership wastes their time here in
the forum.
Oops, I meant to say less than 0.1% of the membership reads the average forum
posting.
How highly we think of ourselves to think that any meaningful basis even cares
what is said here.
One must also recognize that (as Tim Smith once called them) 10 lonely people
make up 1/6 of all forum posts.
The above being said, I still kind of agree with your idea.

Since starting to read and participate in the forum since September of 2013,
I have learned more about the functioning and overall workings of BrickLink.
The myriad of posters have taught me about parts, sets and the way Lego works
in ways that I had never imagined. I highly appreciate everything everyone has
said, whether I agree or not, and grown to know and incredible community of people
who have inspired me in numerous ways. I thank those who have sent me PMs on
a variety of topics to express gratitude, disagreement or guidance.
May I continue to be amazed at the wealth of knowledge offered in these hallowed
posts.

I believe that it benefits people to be exposed to more than what may immediately
be of interest. As a small seller, I have appreciated and benefited from the
perspective that large sellers bring to how business should be conducted. Even
if a buyer has no intent of selling, he could benefit from being exposed to the
seller's perspectives. I prefer keeping a low (no) barrier to entry for
that exposure.

| I agree that buyers learn a lot from reading an open forum. It's nice as
a buyer to see that sellers have everyday problems and advice, and most of them
are seeking advice because they're striving to give customers the best experience
possible. Reading this forum helped me decide to start selling. Also, I agree
with whoever said earlier that it looks like the sellers have something to hide
with a sellers - only forum. Like we're discussing the latest trends in
scamming or something. As a buyer i wouldn't want to be excluded from an
otherwise public part of the site. I had buyer only status not long ago so I
remember well. Then again, I read the forum much less as a buyer than I do
as a seller.

I think that's a terrible idea, you are basically saying that you want buyers
out of the debates.
The forum should just be better organized. A newcomer should easily find a "Help"
forum where questions are asked and answered, not the current mess of every topic
being mixed together in an unsorted list.

Yes, I know that, but newcomers don't . And the 'Topics' page is

I'm new (Dec 2013), and have bought 5x. These forums HELPED me.
Obviously, I vote no. ...but I'd be interested in why you think these forums
are bad?
I agree that the forums need updating and be better organized.
Also, remember the entire BL goal - foster a community. What you suggest is division.

| Hi
Just to clarify my opinion.
I do not want, and has not argued, to cut of anybody from reading the forum.
The forum i important to us all.
The idea was to have a small forum for sellers discussing seller related issues
only.
Any one interested could register as seller and join..
And I still think that some forum threads can harm the site, like the "BL2.0
General Timeline Update" going on right now, so far 111 messages in this Thread
and growing..
I dont think that, washing your dirty laundry in public, does any good.

I do not want to register as a seller.
I would if I can not read this part of the forum otherwise, but it would feel
dishonest.

As a buyer, why shouldn't I understand or have a say with my pleasure
or displeasure with how this site is progressing? I've been a member of BrickLink
for over a decade, only buying here, and why should I lose my ability to participate
because unlike John P, I only buy, I never sell??
