Would be nice to have the ability to make one or more wanted lists "public" so
that if a link was provided to the list other folks could see the list. This
would work similar to Amazon.com wish list in that others can see but not edit
the list.

In my mind, this would be a check box on the wanted list settings (and creation)
screen. Default would be unchecked (meaning private).

[X] Public List

It would be useful in facilitating purchases for gifts (like little Tommy wants
a bunch of batman minifigs so he adds it to his wish list so grandma can buy
one for him by viewing his list), and for facilitating trading because people
can see what the seller would like as payment for the trade items.

Everything else about the wanted list would work the same as it does now - except
that if viewing by someone other then the owner there would be no editing fields
available.

This could lead to offers to sell outside BL.

Talking about something you want/asking if someone has something you want in
the forums could lead to sell outside BL.

I was going to make the same observation with respect to the contact feature.
Any feature could be abused. I think this would be a nice addition to the site.

I agree!

People can make the abuses now that are feared here. So making the want list
so we can at least send it to a seller to see if they have more parts not listed
is unlikely to do any damage to bricklink but for all the honest folks out there
(more of us than dishonest) it would likely generate extra sales for BL and make
it nice for those of us who use want lists.

Though I'd like to see a Comments section in the one we send out.... since I
keep lots of items in my want list I don't really need but because I buy them
so often easier than looking them up over and over. So I could put in comments
something to let seller know not to look for that item.

I also trade here and since we do the trades like a sale BL profits from this
in the same way as a sale. Want lists would help alot here also.

My 2 cents

Thanks,
Junkpile

Hi,
years ago I made a similar suggestion.
I suggested to publish the wanted lists anonymously.
By that way sellers only can make their offers through BrickLink, without knowing
to which potential buyer the offers would be send.
They would know it first when a purchase is made.

I really don't think that having the ability to make a wanted list public would
increase the off-site trades/sales any more than all the other current communication
features do. I do however think that it would make things a lot easier for facilitating
trades on BL and more importantly for making the process of finding gifts for
someone a lot smoother.

right now, you can find retired sets and minifigs on amazon's website, and add
them to the amazon wish list. Of course we all would rather have these shoppers
here, the parents of the kids who want the rare batman fig, and has added it
to the amazon wishlist, better that they come here to BL. without a wishlist
feature I think we are missing out on these folks who want get a loved one exactly
what they want but have no clue about Lego.
