Nobody intends to sell this for $33 EURO a piece:

Part No: 3901 Name: Minifigure, Hair Male Smooth
*
3901 Minifigure, Hair Male Smooth
Parts: Minifigure, Hair

My solution shown here. Hey new Admins, please consider adding this feature.
See my photoshopped red text in the image. This would be awesome.

(and personally, I'd love to know when my items are 25% or more below
average, too)

Thank you,
Todd

Hrm. No.

I think a much better way to solve this is to require a decimal point in the
price field when listing.

I agree with Marc here and, in fact, made this exact same suggestion in the past
(which has since been purged). There are some legal, business and other practical
reasons why BrickLink should NOT tell sellers how their prices compare and rank
percentage-wise with competing sellers.

Even though BL already does do that, while listing an item the market prices
are made available to all sellers. In fact when parting out a set you can simply
tell BL to sell it at current market prices and BL will do it for you.

There's a difference between asking the system to list a part at a statistical
price and telling me that I've screwed up. I may not have screwed up, it may
simply be my choice to list my wares above or below market price.

An alert that I am outside of arbitrary current bounds seems like price fixing.
Whereas selling my parts at average prices is a choice.

Okay, but still, this message could be implemented elsewhere, delivering the
same info. A special link [My Price Comparison] or whatever. Same idea.

Me, personally, I want this information. Why shouldn't the BL system
give it to me? Save countless hours of clicking around?

Aftepes' last two sentences sums this up nicely: "An alert that I am outside

at average prices is a choice."

Me, personally, I want this information. Why shouldn't the BL system
give it to me?

Because it might be illegal or subject BrickLink to unwanted expensive scrutiny?
And for very little in return. Why take such a chance when the return is so minimal?
If you want it, do it for yourself. Make your own analysis and decisions.

The BrickLink Price Guide is an excellent tool. But as non-specialists in antitrust
and competition matters, you do not realize how close the BL Price Guide already
is to crossing the line. I think the Price Guide is legally fine as is, but just
barely. Expanding it in the direction you want could very well push it over the
line and jeopardize having any Price Guide in the future. I urge you to leave
it as is.

If sellers were able to individually choose:

a) what percentage above/below should trigger an alert
b) which guide to compare with ie. Current Items, 6 Month Avg, Own Inv Avg
c) message to be displayed within the alert

is it not the case that there could be no basis to any suggestion of price fixing,
due to the large number of variables available to each individual seller?

Hi Steve. I have responded to your question via a private BL message. I would
like to avoid having this thread turn into another long heated debate about legal
issues. So I provided you my answer in private, and will provide it to anyone
else who wants it - off the forum. From previous discussions of this and similar
suggestions, Admin already knows my thoughts on this. He is free to disregard
them if he so wishes.

I agree with the idea -- In fact I made the same suggestion a while back -

http://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=456182

I was pointing out that while Price Fixing might be a bad thing for BL -- I don't
think these suggestions do much more than the system already does by providing
the market prices.

Yeah, I'm not talking about price-fixing at all. I get other messages there
which I routinely ignore: Lots marked for deletion in catalog, Haven't yet given
FB, etc, etc. This would be just one more for anyone who didn't want to use
it.

Of course, a MUCH HANDIER link would be a full graph/chart listing all my lots,
and their prices compared to the average: +13%, -4%, +22%, +12%, Equal, -15%,
etc. SORTED by %. I would look at my highest and lowest priced items and consider
modifying them. Many people would not care, but I would love it.

I'd like that, too, but that's not quite what you've suggested.

In any case, if you really want to do this, you can, with a combination of BrickStore
and Excel.

Download your inventory into BrickStore, and save that in an Excel format. Then
use BrickStore to set all prices to the 6-month average, and save that as well.
Now use Excel to paste the data into one spreadsheet, write a simple formula
to calculate the price differential, and sort by that column.

Yeah, that doesn't sound complicated at all [end sarcasm tone].

The data is here, on BL. I'm permitted to read it. Why not package it more
easily for me to read?

If you're good with Excel, the only complication is the need to use BrickStore.

And if you're interested in data analysis, you're good with Excel.

As I mentioned, I would like the follow-up suggestion you made. It's the original
post, which displays the information in such a way that it implies an error has
been made, which I do not like.

I am glad you provided the link noted above, because everything that needs to
be said about this suggestion has already been said there. Hopefully, we don't
have to rehash this all over again here.

I think there there is a useful suggestion somewhere in here, though. I also
would like for BL to have a tool that would allow sellers, at their request,
to compare their prices with the competition. I just don't think the current
suggestion is the right one.

There are plenty of parts that I would want to deliberately set at more than
80% above average, for various reasons. I might vote yes for having a tool that
would let me see this data if I chose to, but I think it's a bad idea for BL
to automatically show all sellers a message that their prices are out of line.

On the other hand ... I do remember someone pointing out that we already have
a solution for people who list their items too cheaply:

I vote YES! This is a great idea. However, there ought to also be an option
that a seller can check some box to have that not show up, if they want.

YES, that's a whole new suggestion right there. I vote YES to that too.

A few times, out of kindness, I didn't leave any feedback. But I had to stare
at that "alert" reminding me of missing FB for those orders - for like 6 months
until they were purged.

Nobody intends to sell this for $33 EURO a piece:

Part No: 3901 Name: Minifigure, Hair Male Smooth

3901 Minifigure, Hair Male Smooth
Parts: Minifigure, Hair

My solution shown here. Hey new Admins, please consider adding this feature.
See my photoshopped red text in the image. This would be awesome.

(and personally, I'd love to know when my items are 25% or more below
average, too)

Thank you,
Todd

Apart from the price-fixing concerns, as a seller there are other things I don't
like about this suggestion. I believe it will put even more downward pressure
on prices if you automate this and allow easy mass pricing changes. This is especially
so if, as you suggest, you want to be notified only if your prices are a certain
percentage BELOW the average(1). The fact that sellers now have to manually review,
compare and adjust their prices keeps things under control and limits price wars
and the extent of across-the-board price lowering that sellers can do.

As Marc noted (and as I posted in a previous suggestion) there is a much easier
and safer way to minimize the kind of pricing mistakes where a seller prices
something at $30 when they intended to price it at $0.30. And that is to simply
require the seller to input a decimal point when inputting their price (at least
for currencies where decimal points are used). This would be much easier to code,
completely objective and would entirely avoid any downward pressure on prices
and price-fixing concerns.

(1) But if you tweak this to also tell warn you when your prices are too high
or higher than average, well that creates more price-fixing concerns.
