I am concerned by the amount of packaging waste I generate through regular bricklink
orders :o

Some sellers are *extremely* diligent about packing parts. I appreciate the
effort, but not the waste. I've just thrown out a lot of baggies and jiffy packets
- four months of orders have filled a Cargo Train Deluxe box - which is quite
some size!

I am quite happy when sellers use the safe minimum of packaging. I will start
telling them this when I place the order, but it would be useful to have an option
system-wide, with perhaps some agreed community standards for what 'minimum packaging'
means.

This would hopefully cut a small amount of cost for sellers and buyers, and reduce
the waste generated from our businesses / fun.

cheers,

Andy

Re-using material reduces the waste.

What he said^^^
Every jiffy that comes through the door here gets reused, either as an outer
packaging, r as filler material for larger items. Baggies all get reused for
my own stock and to send out my orders, I just wish I could reuse the tape.

I concurr: seeing you are a seller yourself: recycle the material when you send
your packages.

I've been doing that for years and never heard any complaints about it ...

But you could still save it up and ship it to the nearest seller.
Maybe get a bit of store credit?

I have given away packing material to seller friends.
Also all incomming bags etc are re-used.

Ditto the other comments about simply reusing it all, but before I started up
my own store I used to send a lot of the grip-seal bags back to a good seller.
Cost me a few pence in postage but they didn't get wasted!

The other thing you can do is to put it on Freecycle. It's a site where you basically
give away stuff and pick stuff up that other people in your local area don't
want - the only stipulations are that you are not allowed to ask for payment
or indeed give payment for anything you give or receive. It works for just about
anything you've got lying around the house as somebody is bound to take it and
make use of it.

Totally off-topic on my part, but I have to share: On my local Freecycle mailing
list, we started getting a lot more "wanted" messages instead of "giving away"
messages. Once I saw someone asking for two Nintendo DS consoles, "preferably
new", I decided to post my own wanted message, which went something like this":

Wanted:
I am looking for some $100 bills. Ideally, I'm looking for several dozen of
these, but if you only have one, I am still willing to make the trip out to pick
it up. Used bills are also welcome.

The next day, I discovered that I was banned from the mailing list...

The one I use is similar in that people do use it just to get away without spending
any money. Still, I just ignore those messages and try to keep up with the spirit
of the site. The admin on it have just sent messages round saying they are limiting
peoples wanted's too so hopefully that will sort it. A pretty good site though
for those who hate waste (my current batch of bubble mailers is from there actually
thinking about it).

I love this suggestion.

All the comments about Reusing are nice -- but they don't address what this buyer
is asking for.

I would usually request this except in highly complex orders. I also am always
on the fence as a seller to balance my environmentalism vs. my customer service.
Preedback (I made that up pre-feedback) to point me in the right direction would
be great.

Mike.

I'd keep this as a request from buyer thing. Not a system wide tool. As a seller
it is a lot cheaper for me to excessively protect pieces than have to refund
a damaged one. I'll always honor a request for less packaging but the buyer has
to accept that risk.

I may be guilty of "over packing" but it never hurts to be on the safe side.
We have recently done a goodly amount of on-line and mail orders (not from BrickLink)
and the packages have arrived damaged or crushed and luckily not affecting the
contents.

My policy includes a $1.00 material and handling fee. When I calculate postage
I use the outer item (box or padded envelope), contents and packing list for
the weight. When the order is paid and packed, if the actual postage is more,
the handling fee covers that; if the actual postage is less, I send a refund
or coupon. The Buyer is not charged extra weight for the additional packaging
but often it is needed to protect their order. After all, who wants to get a
crushed package?

Barbara

I personally think that this is something each seller should discuss with their
buyer and their insurance company. There should not be a general policy. Though
a buyer may request minimal packaging, the seller might in the end be responsible.
I would hesitate to use minimal packaging because of risk for damage.

Lego ships their PAB orders in bubble mailers. I have received a torn bubble
mailer from Lego and in another case a battery and some kind of wrapped cookie
had penetrated the bubble mailer. I think you will reduce risk of loosing or
damaging parts if you wrap parts in another layer of bubble mailer and use extra
plastic bags though I like you have a concern for the environment. Hopefully
the buyer will recycle or reuse the packaging materials.

Another consideration would be a potential insurance company. They may have requirements
to the packaging that neither the seller nor the buyer think might be needed.

Also what about packaging re-use?
I am trying to put aside the packaging (bubble paper and boxes) that are clean
and still in good shape).
Then I guess I will see who wants to come and pick it up, for re-use.

My store already has a mechanism for something like this: I offer a choice between
packing for shipping price and conservative packing; it's two different shipping
options. I encourage other sellers to use a similar technique.

On another point, I don't buy bags for my store, I reuse the ones that come with
the sets I part out. Except for minifigs, they're individually bagged in resealable
bags. But you're not going to end up with a lot of excess plastic consumption
as a result of buying from my store.

But, in general: leave a message with your order. Most good sellers will respect
your wishes.

So in the short term I've found a seller who can reuse jiffy packets and bags.

Question to you guys as sellers though...

If I send a message with the order (easy), saying 'minimal packaging please',
would it worry you having to make a decision about what that means?

I know a lot of sellers pride themselves on the packing, and don't want to risk
any damage at all. There's no point having to have a big discussion about just
how many bags to use etc, it would waste everyone's time.

My suggestion isn't for a software setting in the stores, more just some kind
of community standard so that buyers could request this and it wouldn't be a
big stress for sellers. We'd all know what it meant - and who takes the risk
(buyer).

Perhaps it's too much work for too little benefit Wonder if it could be
just a sentence in the store policy page though?

IANALS but you can tell buyers I've had who include information like that by
the feedback I leave. If I say "good communication" it's because I appreciated
their telling me their preferences (not just on packaging but on shipping and
any host of other related things). I like to receive clues regarding my buyers'
preferences.
