I just opened this one yesterday and mine has a Trans-Light Blue cord with Trans-Medium
Blue caps. Are you sure that the cord on yours is also Trans-Medium Blue?

Both of these requests will not be accepted since the versions of the parts you
are asking to change are already listed as Alternate Items in the set inventory.
You can see this by looking at the Match ID (MID) numbers next to the parts in
the Regular Items section of the set inventory and linking them to the parts
in the Alternate Items section of the set inventory that have the same Match
ID (MID) numbers.

Don't get your hopes up. I've bought a lot of bulk lego (from Norwegian
site finn.no). Many claims that "all parts are probably there, but I can't
guarantee". Out of 100sets, there could be maybe 3-5complete sets. Most sets
have unique or rare parts, so it didn't help me much to have 5000 unique
spare parts. Rebrickable.com is great for finding what you can build, but you
will probably need some spare parts from bricklink 😉
2years ago I was doing what you probably are doing now. Then I got this idea
that it would be fun to have as many unique bricks as possible so that I could
build whatever I want whenever I want. Doesn't seem like it is going to happen,
I'm at about 10.000 unique now.

My first reply to you was just an answer to your question. I do not agree with
the inconsistency, also, but I am not a catalog associate yet who can do anything
about it. I would be happy to have Marek add it to the Catalog Roadmap for consideration
of being worked on, but it would be rather low on the priority list. Although,
it would not be a big issue to tackle, so could be done rather quickly.

unattached robot arm and claw. The catalog picture for a minifigure shows the
minifigure assembled. Most catalog pictures for sets show the set assembled.
But your customers are not expecting you to take what Lego supplied and assemble

Yes, there are listings for EVERY torso with arms. While Lego never supplied
them with no arms and the market for unattached torsos varies greaty among them,
the point of having every torso in the catalog is that every torso is a discrete
Lego element. The catalog tries to contain every discrete Lego element, but
has always been cautious about having listings for combinations of pieces. A
full minifig, yes. Some big figs and brickbuilt animals now, yes. Combined
turntables that sometimes came assembled in sets, yes. Some combinations that
are hard to take back apart without damage, yes. But some minifig parts in an
obviously incomplete assembly because Lego supplied them? I don't see the
point and it opens a giant can of worms. Did you know that through the 80s and
90s, minifig torsos usually came with their heads attached? Should we have a
listing for each of those head/torso combinations because Lego supplied them
that way? Does anyone really want a head and torso with no hat or legs? Or
a torso with 1 arm and 1 hand? I doubt it unless the price is very low.

I think the "can of worms" is when BL makes exceptions based on precedent in
one case, but ignores precedent in other cases. The squishy definition of what
merits a separate entry in the catalog is part of what has led to issues like
this.
There may indeed be people who want to buy the torso/head assemblies from the
older sets, and there would be no harm in adding them to the catalog and including
them in inventories. But an exception has been made. We are told that some assemblies
need to be deleted from the catalog because they were never packaged that way,
yet some assemblies that were issued as new are not? Why is that?
Well, it isn't based on what people want, obviously. The market for 1x1 round
plates on the sprue is tiny compared to that for the individual plates, yet that
is the part inventoried in sets where it appeared. The market for the 1x4 hinge
assembly is many times larger than the market for the individual pieces, yet
the assembly is marked for deletion.
Consistent application of a set of simple guidelines would eliminate a lot of
these issues. In the past - and even now - it seems when faced with conflicts
like this the admins have chosen to add complexity rather than opt for simplicity.
Either way is going to result in apparent inconsistencies, but the way that requires
the least amount of waffling and explanation is preferable, in my opinion.

I agree. Most customers buying new parts expect me to take the new parts as supplied
by LEGO and send those. They do not expect me to assemble them. But I cannot
sell the parts that LEGO supplied here, I have to sell either a combination of
them or pull them apart. There is no option to sell it as it was originally supplied.
It is the inconsistency that is a problem. Going back to the sprues, LEGO did
not intend them to be used according to the pictures of the sets. But BL catalogues
these parts as coming on a sprue. They are listed as coming that way in the set,
whether or not all the parts are needed. There is an option to sell the parts
connected to a sprue (or in a bag) as supplied or sell the parts individually.
Whereas here, they are not listed as they come in the set. There is no option
to sell the parts as supplied.

If you attach the arm one time, it is still new according to the rules. That
option is on the table. Bagging them separately and together are both on the
table, together being probably preferable if you are afraid the buyer will not
find the arm.

Another illustrative example of why the "consistency" approach doesn't work.
In cases like this, the admins have to choose which practice to be "consistent"
with, which creates inconsistency.
The way to avoid it is to have guidelines that are as simple as possible. "Define
parts based on how they are found in a sealed set" is one simple guideline. If
we always follow that guideline, then the set inventories take care of themselves
and parting out new sets works. If we make an exception, then make more exceptions
because of that first exception, then ultimately ignore the guideline because
"That's they way we've always done it," the guideline has lost its meaning.
When faced with a dilemma like this partly-assembled torso, the decision should
be made in favor of the more basic principle, not later exceptions.
I think it is clear that many of the inconsistencies in the catalog are the result
of implementing ever-more complicated "rules" that are put in place to handle
exceptions rather than basing decisions on a few simple guidelines.
It should surprise nobody that people attracted to Lego are also really into
elaborate systems, but the secret to Lego's success as a system is that it
is not elaborate. Just a few rules create a very flexible system.

OK, so it's historical. Will this ever be changed to reflect what is actually
received in a set rather than what is needed for a set, like the debate about
the sprued parts now being the whole sprue rather than the required parts only?
If parting these out it is necessary to assemble them, and I don't want to
assemble them if they later become the individual parts.

My set contained dark. Much too late for a sealed pic, but I've had it under control since opening it.

The set probably always contained Trans-Dark Pink. Since your set was sealed
and the original inventory has had so many problems corrected in it over time,
I think I will remove the Trans-Pink one altogether. If a Trans-Pink one is ever
found in the future, we can add it back in.

I didn't find photos of sealed set contents here. However, based on my recent inventory change requests, I think the transition from 3650a to 3650b is quite clear now.
- 3650a was included in sets until 1991. We have proof that two sets (8074 and 8856) released in 1991 came with 3650a in early and 3650b in later copies.
- 3650b was included in a copy of set 8837 which was produced in March 1992.
- During my research, I didn't find 3650a in any set released after 1991.
(If this request is accepted, I will continue with the remaining wrong and undetermined entries of this part.)

If I remember correctly, the reason for "extra" parts is because the set
is the same as which is composed of
Some black parts are sort of 'extra' (from 3745-1) because this set is
used to build other locomotives

The My Own Train locomotive sets 3740 and 3741 were designed to build TWO different
models with full instructions to do so. When building one or the other, there
will be pieces left over.
Here is the page from the instructions showing the alternate build that does
use each of the pieces you show in your original post.

These set inventories have stood unchanged for many years because they are accurate
and correct. They were produced and sold by LEGO back before there used to be
intentional Extra Pieces, so every piece in the inventory is needed to build
either the primary or the secondary model.
Also, the packs of colored bricks for these sets --
contain the correct parts to build either the
short locomotive or the long locomotive. When done building one or the other,
there will be different pieces left over, but all of the pieces are needed for
one or the other with no extra pieces at all.

Photos found on German site Ebay Kleinanzeigen (Ebay Classifieds), listing 1004287617. Fortunately, the batch code 1012 is visible, meaning this copy was produced in early March 1992. Since the release date was May 1992, it is very likely that this set always came with 3650b.

How does the thin portion of a Trans-Light Blue icon part compare to the color
of this strip? My wife took my strip to work, so I can't do it myself right
now. If you can, take a pic holding both up towards a light source like I showed
you for the Trans-Dark Pink ones. Remember, the Trans-Dark Pink flexy films were
much lighter looking when compared to Trans-Dark Pink icon parts until I held
them to the light looking at similar thicknesses. This may be a similar case
as the strip doesn't quite look like Trans-Very Light Blue.

Oops. I forgot that I had this set, so I took a look at the flower flexies.
I am torn on what to do about these bluish-green parts, but I think we should
settle for Trans-Very Light Blue like you have suggested. These flexy films are
milkier than some of the other flexies I bought from you which makes the color
harder to nail down since they do not transmit light through them easily. If
the milky layer wasn't on it, it may look closer to Trans-Light Blue, but
as is looks closer to Trans-Very Light Blue for simplicity.
I will approve your requests for these parts.

The pics show this pink flower with a trans-dark pink flexy film. And this "aqua"
flower with another flexy film the same color that I am also changing and a flexy
film called aqua that is a much better fit. And a picture of the two flexy films
I am changing to trans-very light blue with some trans-very light blue plastic
pieces and also trans-light blue.

Could you please post an image of the cover card for this set? I would like to
see if it differs from the cover card for the 1999 version. If so, we should
probably make a new catalog entry for the set instead of adding all of these
alternates.

That front card is different from the 1999 version shown below. I think a new
set entry is going to be the solution to this as they are easy to distinguish
by the part count and theme logo listed on the front. The 1999 version says 804
pieces and has the Dacta logo while the 2003 version says 800 pieces and has
the LEGO educational division logo.
Please submit your set to the catalog as set 9680-2 with the name "Energy Work,
Power Starter Set (2003 Version)". From there, we can start on an inventory of
the set. Could you please send high quality photos of the entire parts list that
was included on the card in your set to inv@bricklink.com?

Yeah, I bought one of those "aqua" strips from you and was going to get around
to talking about it with you. Have you tried placing it next to the Clikits Trans-Medium
Blue parts that aren't really Trans-Medium Blue but a yet-to-be-added color?
I would be curious to see that image before moving ahead with this.

I am not attaching a picture because the part's picture is good enough. It is an orange cord with pink caps.
