I have this in a set and I want to determine it, but I'm a little lost.
It has the 4 slots, but I can't tell from the limited pics the long and short
socket. Can someone help?

The four I have are the same length but as one has two slots and the others 4,
I guess they are all “long.”
The length is a bit more than a stud: you can’t put a brick in front of the socket
and aligned on studs. (You can put a plate because the slots are high enough
for the tiny “bit more.”)

Oh, if you have

those are shorter, by around 1mm.

I concur with the brownish looking older greys.

The light greys look yellow compared to lbg.

Yes. The “Bluish” aren’t bluish, they are really grey. They only appear bluer
than the old greys because those were actually yellowish. But they already had
a name and people were used to their names and tints, so the newer ones were
named “Bluish.”

Depends, what do you have?

If it’s post-2005, it’s DBG.
If it’s pre-2004, it’s DG.
In between, well, the Big Colour Shift happened in 2004 but LEGO used their stocks
for a while

You can also check the inventories of your sets. If both greys were used for
a set, it’s generally noted in the inventory (Alternates section).

Also some parts exist only, or are much more frequent, in one dark grey.

I can't discover anything panel-ish about this part. I'd say it's
window, door, technic, other, vehicle, or pretty much anything except a panel...
What do you think it should be?

Since

Part No: 30528 Name: Arch 1 x 8 x 6 (Portal)
*
30528 Arch 1 x 8 x 6 (Portal)
Parts: Arch
is an arch, 49699 should perhaps just be a slope

I don’t quite follow the logic here
Half an arch might be a slope but, surely, an arch + an inverted arch is not
a slope, it’s a cylinder!

At least it has something in common with

Part No: 30180 Name: Slope 45 10 x 2 x 2 Double
*
30180 Slope 45 10 x 2 x 2 Double
Parts: Slope

Okay but then it should be a Slope AND a Slope Inverted. And both Double. So
does that make it Quadruple or Double-Double?

We really need a catmin who is used to deep and rigorous classifications.
I don’t know, maybe an entomologist or something like that?

My first thought is technic or window frame

Well:

1. Window (or door) frame implies you could put a glass or panel (or door)
inside. That seems very unlikely with the technic holes in the way.

2. It’s been used in System (City) sets for now BUT it sure looks like a Technic
Brick, yet not really.
So Technic could do but not really “Technic Brick” and there are no similar parts
(that I know of) in the other Technic categories, that would mean it should fall
in the general “Technic” category, which is already overpopulated.

I’m not envying the catmins

It took me a while but I misunderstood the purpose of this post at first. I
had originally thought that it was to arrange a trade for a rare brick for possibly
another rare brick. You know, 3 or 4 messages to establish the trade. Then
the trade happening via bricklink Private messages because, why would anyone
one else be interested in the details of one person's trade?

However, as I stated, I was wrong. This thread was meant to be a long, rambling,
time consuming library of Australian slang and possibly insults(I don't truthfully
know as I don't have the Australian to American translator to hand).

Looks like Devil.R is not alone¹: they answer multiple times to the same messages
and they keep answering to themselves.

(¹That expression may have a figurative colloquial meaning, at least it has one
in French, but I’m not implying that. IOW, if you think I’m saying something

That thread could be a bit more sufferable if other people² (whose answers trigger
my reading: I’m an optimist and always hope for something useful to be said)
would correctly cut the quotes, and eventually decide if they want to top-post
or bottom-post.

(²Regulars should lead by example.)

Shoot yeah! Let's make this thread a record breaker of waste. See you all
here again and soon and often

It would be great if I could change the time zone on BrickLink. Maybe not the
most necessary feature, but it feels like it wouldn't be that difficult of
a thing to implement.

Have you ever thought about it's complexity?

Very simple: everything is stored in UTC and presented in a local/chosen TZ.

The UTC → local TZ conversion is done with a standard, well tested library.

There. The complexity is outsourced.

Besides, it’s just about presentation. Official times are those in the database,
on the server, in UTC.

  See Tom Scott's YouTube
episode about implementing time zones in programming:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5wpm-gesOY

I stopped watching after he began talking about DST (“autumn in England”).

And that’s absurd. He talks about a programmer who:
1. doesn’t know what TZs are,
2. adds cases one by one instead of, finally, learning what’s it about,
3. and thus reinvents the wheel, spoke by spoke.

Yes, timezones are complex (and involve politics, therefore also totally insane)
and that’s why you don’t cobble up something in your garage.

Yes, timezones change frequently (remember, politics), but you just update the
TZ data the library uses.

One could do the same kind of video about 3D geometry or any other complex or
complicated but already well known feature.

Just showing a given UTC time in a chosen TZ should be easy peasy.

There are lots of reasons why something isn’t automatized. The main ones are:
1. You have to realize it’s stupid work.
2. “You can automatize that?!” The users don’t even know they can ask for it
to be done.
3. And, of course, “there’s something else more urgent to do.”

You thought about it because you’re lazy (in a good way ) and you needed to
do the job yourself.

=VLOOKUP(E3;"$Page2.$A$3.$B$217";2)that's my formula

Ah, okay, my fault: no quotes around the region.

And to get the correct values for the region, try this:
— start editing the cell by deleting the region,
— do not validate, just let the text cursor where the region will be,
— go to the page with the colour and select the area (the two columns with colours
IDs and names), the formula should now have the correct region,
— validate.

If that cell now has the correct value, then you can edit the formula again to
add the $ so you can use it in the other cells.

Colours are only numbers though. So you’ll need to import the colour table (same
form) to cross the tables.

Okay, this is obviously beyond my skill set. Anyone like to show me, preferably
via screen shots, exactly how to do this. Please.

For the first part:

1. Download the set inventory as Tab-delimited (should give you a “S-NNN-1.txt”
file).

2. Open Excel, open the file from Excel (or drag and drop it), it should give
you an import dialog where you can tweek things (delimiters, how numbers are
read, locale…) but you shouldn’t have to change anything because the tab-delimited
file is pretty simple/default.

You should now have the inventory in a table.

If you want to get colour names instead (or rather, besides) their code, well,
my Excel is a bit rusty (I use LibreOffice now) but this should do it:

1. Download the colour table as Tab-delimited (should give you a “colors.txt”
file).

2. Open it from Excel like above.

Note that it should be possible to cross/match from an external file but I’m
not sure how, so we’ll do it in one file, the one we have the inventory in.

3. Select and copy the first two columns (others are not needed).

4. Go back to the inventory file.

5. Create a new page (it’s cleaner) and paste the colours names and IDs.

6. Add a column in the inventory for the colour names.

7. Use the VLOOKUP function for the first item: “=VLOOKUP( E3 ; region ; 2 )”.
“E3” should be the cell with the colour code for the first item (line 3). “region”
is the whole region with the colours in the second page (e.g. “$Page2.A3.B217”).
“2” is because we want the value in the 2nd column, the colour name.

8. Add a $ before every value in the region (e.g. if it was “$Page2.A3.B217”,
make it “$Page2.$A$3.$B$217”). That will block the values (they won’t change
when the formula is moved or copy-pasted or dragged.

9. Apply the formula all the way down, for all the items by dragging the bottom-right
handle.

Now all the items have the colour code and names.

Hope that’s clear and helping

The two file options in the download tab are not Excel

You can open the tab-delimited text file in Excel and save it as an Excel file.

Actually, you could also import the XML version but the tab-delimited file contains
the items current names

Colours are only numbers though. So you’ll need to import the colour table (same
form) to cross the tables.

It is probably a stupid question, but does BL have a test server where such changes
can be tried out without affecting how regular users use the site or allowing
regular users to snoop or interrupt the testing of ideas?

It seems crazy that any ideas that get tried out (that do affect regular users)
need to be made on the client facing server.

(Snide: BL doesn’t even have _one_ working website. )

There was a second website where users (mainly sellers) were encouraged to go
when BL2 was to come (the new skin, the new main page, the new WLs, etc.). It
had an older version of the database, with no impact on the actual database.
Some people went there, made bug reports and remarks, and then the update was
put in production as it was and the people who didn’t go to the second site were
angry because they hadn’t known and those who went were angry too because they
weren’t heard.
And then everybody was adverse to any change. Go figure.

Anyway, the “sleeves” changes are on the catalogue, the database, not the website,
its skin and features. So that would mean the catmins would have changed a copy
of the database, then told us “eh, go see what we did,” and then we would have
had a discussion, and maybe a few back and forth, and in the end, they would
have to do all the final changes again on the real database because they don’t
have a direct access to the database and can’t write scripts or do partial saves
and partial updates and the actual database would have changed in the meanwhile
too.

Still, parts have "Size: 2 x 1 x 3 in studs"

This is the issue, when many units are used, they have to be explicitly written
to avoid such confusion, as history tells us, help page on BL are not enough.

I suggest to add a note on each single page of inventory for parts (done
by front "code" obviously, default design for parts for instance) about the units
used. Kind of studs from width/length, brick height for height.

Or that the size be formatted as “2 x 1 x 3 (studs x studs x bricks)” or, better,
“2 studs x 1 stud x 3 bricks.”

And these suggestions have been made almost every time a remark such as yours
was made but nothing changed

It is hard to believe that Lego makes
mistakes, most of us think that they are gods on Mt Olympus. They also contribute
to problems and often in the distant past put whatever they had into sets. The
old set 800 (I think that that is the number) called for a garage and they substituted
something totally different. They had ran out of the correct parts.

Considering Greek gods are far from paragons of perfection, subject to their
whims, inconsistent, unreasonable, and uncaring of us, mortals, I’d say “most
of us” are on to something here

Here is what I actually said "I really don't know if I'll take your advise

got no skin in the game, as they say."

And I said, several times:
1. Buyers are a part of the selling game. Or please explain to me to whom would
you send those notifications and who’s gonna pay for the orders?
Might I remind you sellers only get a bit more than 97% of the money whereas
buyers pay 100%.
2. You linked a message from a 0-fb buyer as motive for this idea.

  [… other insults …]

Can’t you just even answer arguments with counter arguments? Do you have to
always resort to condescension and making fun of people in every discussion you
take part?

I thought this time would be different because you started the thread but I was
wrong. You still believe it’s some sort of game of which you’re the best player
and in which you can loftily praise and admonish.
You’re just a bully.

gallic friend, as a non seller and not much of a buyer (it
would appear from your history here) I really don't know if I'll take
your advise on this particular question, as earnestly as I would some
others here. You've got no skin in the game, as they say.

You’re talking about sellers reaching to buyers. I’d have thought buyers’ opinions
would be of interest to you.
But maybe it’s a cultural thing. After all, EU is opt-in while the USA are opt-out.
Recipients like to be in the loop here, not treated like kettle/cattle….

Besides, if you only consider sellers or very frequent buyers then I don’t understand
why you linked the message of a zero feedback buyer as a motive for your idea.
Or is there a “too much but not enough” range of buyers you’re excluding?

But I am glad you came out to play with me again

Make up your mind: you just said you don’t want me and my kind on the field

"you and your kind?" Feeling persecuted, are you? No, my dove. To me you are
one-of-a-kind.

Once again, make up your mind.

You said you didn’t want to consider my opininon because I’m a non seller, neither
0- nor “enough”- (whatever that would be) FB buyer. I thought that applied to
all non sellers, neither 0- nor “enough”- (whatever that would be) FB buyers,
or even all buyers-only.
Doesn’t that fall under the phrase “me and my kind”?

And now you’re saying I’m alone. So it’s only my opinion you don’t want to consider?

So, either you don’t want me-and-my-kind’s opinion or you don’t want my opinion.
That’s not my feeling persecuted, that’s your dismissing my opinion.

It’s your right not wanting to care about someone’s opinion but, besides being
inconsistent with first having asked everyone’s opinions, you can’t both say
you don’t care about someone’s opinion and then deny you said it.

And, by the way, stop giving me names. I’m not your pigeon or any other pet.
That’s condescending.

But why all the hostility, are we not best of friends

Seems to me your best friend is liquid and bubbly.

It's the middle of the night for you in France. Try not to dwell on thoughts
of me, and what I think. Get some sleep...

Don’t mind my sleep, I sleep like a baby: I wake up every other hour and I cry.

Or maybe this one: I sleep very well, some nights I even sleep more than once!

Or is there a “too much but not enough” range of buyers you’re excluding?

Wayne's post and others like it, https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1150409
brings to mind an idea that briefly visited my headspace some time ago:

No, no, you tempter, I won’t ask if it felt alone in there!

A type of reverse want list. That is, a way that sellers could peruse the current
want lists to specific buyer's needs, to then as a seller, proactively engage
members like Wayne with offers on items they have on their want list.

Kinda like amping-up the want list and selling process, by getting the sellers
more involved in increasing their sales by actually selling

It's just a rough draft of an idea. Limitations, restriction and other refinements
of the idea, expected.

But hey, BL shot-callers, it speaks directly to upping the sales numbers!

Hmm, let’s see if I understand correctly.

Now, the buyer can search the stores that have the most items for their WLs.
They need to actualize their search from time to time to see if new sellers /
better matches appear.

And you’d want that search to be automatized so that the buyer receive a notification
for their whole WL?

If that’s it, when will that notification be sent? When the WL is X% fulfill(able)?
— If X is too high, many WLs will never have such a notification.
— If X is too low, that could make for a lot of notifications.

Or do you just want the search to be reversed, that a seller actively search
for WLs they can fulfill with their inventory?

Here again, percentage of fulfillment could be what makes it useful or spamful.

Anyway, I’m not sure it’s very different from the already existing WL notification
system except it would be for several parts at once, not one by one.
I rarely use that, indeed because that would cause too many notifications for
common parts and it doesn’t tell me if the seller has other parts, so adding
that multiple parts feature could be interesting. Though I’m not sure I would
opt in: it’s as easy to make a search from time to time.

A related question: Can’t sellers easily see on how many WLs their parts are
so that they can decide when to send notifications?
I mean, do you have to browse all your inventory part by part to have this info?

They're using less crude oil by no longer using it to make plant peices.
They could possibly make all of the parts from plants instead of oil once they
find enough sugar cane farms that can keep up with the demand.

No, they couldn’t. Most of the parts are ABS, not PE. Different plastics, different
processes.

PE can be made from ethanol. (Ahoy matey, sugar cane is rum!)
ABS is more complex.

Good idea!
But I need a list where my existing WL are shown after the order is placed (checkout).

There already is a link at checkout for searching your order in your WLs.

And you can do it whenever you want from your WLs with the order number, or
from the order summary page with the scroll icon (which appears when you select
the option “Items in Order in My Wanted List Icon” on this page: https://www.bricklink.com/orderSettingsCols.asp?v=p&viewFrom=O

In LDD, look at the Part # / Design ID in the status line. Use that as a search
term. To catch patterned or composite parts, add a star.

“MINI ALIEN PET” = 95204, a search for “95204*” gives:

Part No: 95204pb01 Name: Alien Clinger with White Eye with Black Pupil Pattern
*
95204pb01 Alien Clinger with White Eye with Black Pupil Pattern
Parts: Animal, Land

“SHELL - MORNING STAR” = 54177, a search for “54177” gives:

Part No: 54177 Name: Minifigure, Weapon Spiked Ball Half with 2 Axle Holes
*
54177 Minifigure, Weapon Spiked Ball Half with 2 Axle Holes
Parts: Minifigure, Weapon

If you want both, add them in a Wanted List and then you can search stores (
https://www.bricklink.com/v2/wanted/buy.page ).

It’s because the ones they don’t do on a Friday as they are leaving for the weekend
are either:
1. not breaking anything because they weren’t made by sleep-deprived, eager to
leave for the weekend devs,
2. or quickly fixed because said devs hadn’t yet rushed to the nearest dive to
drown their memories of that awful spaghetti code and all the 500’s they got
the whole week.

I just opened my first sealed set ever where every part that is supposed to be
white looks almost exactly like a perfect match for tan or slightly lighter.
It is quite weird to be expecting white parts and seeing everything look tan.
You would never know these parts were ever white by looking at them since the
color is even on all surfaces of every part. Because the set was sealed, it could
not be UV damage due to sunlight as so many sites claim, so some other chemical
process occurs. There must be some sort of breakdown of some additive in the
ABS due to storage conditions of the set (maybe higher temperatures). I don't
know what it is, but I am less than happy with my purchase now.

You read the wrong sites

UVs don’t tan the plastic. UVs accelerate or make possible some chemical reactions
in the plastic.
Other things may accelerate the reactions. And the reactions also occur all
by themselves.

Some additives do react more easily or mode badly than others. That’s what happened
with the old bricks / old ABS.

And yes, UVs can also help “cure” the problem because it helps oxydation reactions,
which are also greatly helped by the presence of free oxygen, like when the parts
are soaking in peroxyde.

Nope. I have none. Dark Ages.

If the sets that use them are using them differently, — that is, if they aren’t
substitutable —, the variant would really be necessary. It wouldn’t be the first
time TLG thought better about making a part “in System,” like

Part No: 4081 Name: Plate, Modified 1 x 1 with Light Attachment (Undetermined Type)
*
4081 Plate, Modified 1 x 1 with Light Attachment (Undetermined Type)
Parts: Plate, Modified
Marked for Deletion

or

Part No: 4623 Name: Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with Bar Arm Up (Undetermined Type)
*
4623 Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with Bar Arm Up (Undetermined Type)
Parts: Plate, Modified

I wanted to look at the building instructions to look for a mathematical necessity
for the change, but there are some 14 sets that use them, so knowing from which
sets they came from would have narrowed the search.

On the other hand, another possibility simply is that some are not LEGO

The front box type 2 does NOT have the number of pieces and does not have the

Are there any fakes?
Also on the small side where there are minifigs in the type 2 box there are no

Maybe just a US / EU difference on the boxes: number of parts is an obligation
in the USA, it’s rarely on EU boxes.

For the minifigures, 5 are Disney characters, 2 are statues. They just decided
the statues weren’t real minifigures after all.

There might be other differences in the production runs: newer variants, different
extra parts….

At least, for now, no one has come and said the inventory was wrong

  Hi,
I hope this is the right place to post this.
I think it would be a good thing to be able to set the maximum number of stores
used to fulfill a wanted list search of matching stores in order to have a good
compromise between items costs and shipping costs.
Since shipping costs can't be taken in count during stores automatic selection,
you could add a parameter "max N° of stores" so that we can compair a result
with 10 stores and very low pieces costs and 2 stores with more high pieces costs.
Sometime shipping costs from many stores override high pieces costs from 1 or
2 stores.
hope is clear enough

First, it has been said that the algorithm has a (mysterious) way to include
shipping costs in its calculations.

Then, at a time there were up to three options for Auto-Select:
1. minimize price,
2. minimize number of stores,
3. “best” price (we never could get an answer about what “best” meant).

And they were removed because they didn’t work as advertized and there were “funny”
results (“min stores” cheaper than “min price” or “min price” with fewer stores
than “min stores” and such).

IOW, I doubt BL could implement your suggestion.

Moreover, it has been said several times that development on this website is,
at best, frozen.
So, if I were you, I wouldn’t hold my breath for that suggestion to be even considered.

Brickset (= more or less LEGO) agrees with BrickLink to reach 273 pieces in total,
so, unless another part is wrong, it looks correct.

Note that the 5th part was changed to extra on February, 16th 2012, and changed
back to regular on the 19th.
Unfortunately, we can’t see the messages accompanying the changes anymore

‘b’ doesn’t exist in Blue but it exists in Light Gray.
That’s the reason why ‘a’ and ‘b’ versions exist.

‘not-a-not-b’ should have been ‘u’ndetermined, and then deleted.

Yeah, so why call this a pin 1/2 ... […]

Because there’s no constistence to the catalogue?

Personally, I'd go with a naming convention of the form:

Part No: 32054 Name: Technic, Pin 3L with Friction Ridges and Stop Bush
*
32054 Technic, Pin 3L with Friction Ridges and Stop Bush
Parts: Technic, Pin

Pin 2L (with friction ridges) and Stop Bush 1L.

So a normal pin would be a pin 2L, a half pin would be a pin 1L, and so on. Anything
with four half pins would be "with 4 pins 1L" and so on.

Okay… provided we agree on what a “L” is and out-of-system dimensions like “2/3
L” are verified before being accepted in the catalogue

My point was that if you categorize it as a bushing, you don't need to worry
about the length of it at all. You don't see the axle bushing above listed
as a "Technic Bush 1L". It is just "Technic Bush". So change that one to "Technic
Axle Bush" and

Part No: 18654 Name: Technic, Liftarm Thick 1 x 1 (Spacer)
*
18654 Technic, Liftarm Thick 1 x 1 (Spacer)
Parts: Technic, Liftarm
to "Technic Pin Bush" and problem solved. No need to worry about the length at
all. Like I said, it doesn't and can't connect pins or axles at all,
so it is definitely *not* a "Technic, Pin Connector". And that's a fact.

Simple solution indeed.
No wonder you’re, er, should be, paid the big bucks

So is a "pin" the same as a "stud"?

No. A "pin" is the standard Technic pin. Basically, half of

Part No: 2780 Name: Technic, Pin with Short Friction Ridges
*
2780 Technic, Pin with Short Friction Ridges
Parts: Technic, Pin

A "stud" is the standard connection point on the top of LEGO bricks and plates.

Yes, and wes say “stud” for the distance between the centers of two studs / the
width of 1-stud-wide brick or plate.

Example, part 2817 is a modified plate, 2 x 2 with pin holder
and it is possible to attach a stud of say a 1x4 in the pin holder to do a perpendicular
build. Is the cuff for attachment too shallow on the 18654 to, say, do a reversal?
Just asking or future buying and building

You can do a stud reversal with

Part No: 18654 Name: Technic, Liftarm Thick 1 x 1 (Spacer)
*
18654 Technic, Liftarm Thick 1 x 1 (Spacer)
Parts: Technic, Liftarm
just like with any other thick Technic liftarm since they are the same thickness.
Part 18654 is pretty much just a thick 1L Technic liftarm.

Exactly, “BEAM 1X1” is its LEGO name.

And about puting studs in technic holes, note that a technic hole is slightly
smaller than a stud (the actual round peg), and if you attach more than one stud
to technic holes, the force needed to remove them once inserted is too strong
for a 7-year-old child. That’s why LEGO say it’s “illegal” to connect more than
one stud to technic holes.

Also, note that a technic hole is also slightly higher than a side-stud on the
modified bricks. So you shan’t mix bricks with side studs and technic bricks
with half-pins (though some official builds do).
And you shan’t have overhanging bricks on top of the technic brick. Like on
the picture below, the red plate shan’t be placed over the tan plates. (Yes,
some official builds do that too.)

And while we are talking about SNOT building, be careful with logos, they really
push the bricks that want to lay on them (second picture, if the blue brick had
studs, the red brick wouldn’t be able to attach correctly to the tan headlight
brick, and would be pushed upward by the stud).

I’m wondering what’s the rationale for having changed the name (and dimensions)
of

Part No: 18654 Name: Technic, Liftarm Thick 1 x 1 (Spacer)
*
18654 Technic, Liftarm Thick 1 x 1 (Spacer)
Parts: Technic, Liftarm
from “1 L” to “2/3 L”.

I can’t see where it’s 0.67L.

Especially if I compare it to

Part No: 62462 Name: Technic, Pin Connector Round 2L with Slot (Pin Joiner Round)
*
62462 Technic, Pin Connector Round 2L with Slot (Pin Joiner Round)
Parts: Technic, Connector

Part No: 6538 Name: Technic, Axle Connector 2L (Ridged Undetermined Type)
*
6538 Technic, Axle Connector 2L (Ridged Undetermined Type)
Parts: Technic, Connector
and their variants, or with

Part No: 43857 Name: Technic, Liftarm Thick 1 x 2
*
43857 Technic, Liftarm Thick 1 x 2
Parts: Technic, Liftarm
and other liftarms/beams, or all the connectors with “# L” in their descriptions.

In the same way, its new dimensions are 1 x 1 x 0.67. As it’s a cylinder, it
means the 0.67 is supposed to apply to its height. But its height is exactly
1 stud, which is 5/6th = 0.83 brick, not 2/3rd = 0.67, and, anyway, “L” means
stud, not brick, so 1 = 1.

Therefore, I strongly believe its name should have stayed “Technic, Pin Connector
Round 1 L” and its dimensions should be 1 x 1 x 0.83.
(Actually, its diameter is a shy less than 1 stud, so its dimensions should be
0.9something x 0.9something x 0.83 but all the liftarms have the same width and
are said to be 1 stud wide.)

Not filing a proper catalogue change request because I really would want to know
the reasoning here, not play ping-pong.

Comments from Submitter:
I assume, someone has inventorized 4 x 87994 additional light bluish bars (1 to much by mistake) instead of adding one additional light bluish flick missile. Both are looking similar to each other.
(I think that the 4 bars should be reduced to 3 as well)

It’s not a mistake, I also got 9 (5+4) 87994 and 8 (8+0) 61184.
Extras are just that, extras, you are not assured to get them, and they can change
with production runs.

So, to be clear, your extra 61184 can be added but the 87994 you didn’t get should
stay.

Are these current colors with Lego?

There was a “Great Colour Shift” around 2004.
The main colours that were replaced were Light and Dark Grays, and Brown, but
the other colours were also slightly modified.

LBG, DBG, and Reddish Brown are the current colours since then.

As for the difference, you need to look at your parts in daylight or with a daylight
tinted lightbulb. The old greys are yellowish/kaki (hence the newer ones looking
bluish in comparison whereas they are actually nearer “true” grey).

The best way is to keep at hand parts of which you are certain of the colours.

  Against.

I don’t know why “jumper” was chosen. The similarity with electrical jumpers
(little wires that “jump” over the main circuits, or little thingies to connect
two plots) is tenuous: yes it’s a connector but everything connects in LEGO.
But I believe “jumper” can be taken to mean that the connection “jumps” half
a stud.
Anyway, “jumper” is well engraved as meaning “offset stud” which the missing-studs
plates and having-studs tiles don’t have.

Sylvain, your previous thread-joint reply was appreciated! A Programmer-based
deficiency for sure...

So, truly, what we all need to consider is this:
Is BrickLink, as the premier site for those who have, maybe for the first time,
visited Lego.com to complete sets or begin their life-long passion as a creator
of MOC, or to find long sought after sets from days they remember, to base our
catalogue on Lego.com nomenclature and numbering system to be:

"Buyer Focused" so that they can jump-start their search based on item classifications
and numbers they found off of a set they own or want to recreate...Or, maybe,
just maybe, even more Intuitive! Now that would be something.

Or, wanting to determine the number of categories and number/images to make it
easy to store and access for those selling to pick from to be:
"Seller Focused"

My guess is that there are a lot more first-time potential buyers registering
on here and trying to make sense of what we are doing than long-term hobbyists.

I am always aware of what we may be losing in customer base. Just have a heart
for the ones that you never hear from on the Forum who just can't make sense
of it all...

Indeed. But what I’m against, and I wasn’t clear, is the use of the term “jumper”
for a tile with studs + plate without studs category.
For me, “jumper” is specific to 3794 (and its variants) and then to 87580 and
then to 34103. That’s only 3 (or 5) parts.
All tiles and plates could well be in a unique category (like they mostly are
in LDraw or LDD) but I don’t want it called “jumper”

The problem verily lies within the strict category system, the lack of a parallel
tag system or at least the possibility for a part to appear in more than one
category.

With such a system, either you have a system that plans for anything and everything,
and you end up with the Dewey Decimal Classification for books, that no one understands
but specialists, or you have a system that needs to change with new elements
or better knowledge on the elements, like Linné’s taxonomy of living beings,
and, well, that no one understands but specialists either
Either way, there’s still a need for a simple way, both for the hoi polloi and
the elite actually, to find a part, or a group of similar parts (whatever “similar”
might mean), in a few clicks.

In a library, the Dewey DC (or another similar system) is used for numbering
the books and the shelves but a patron just needs to talk to a librarian or use
a search tool to find the book they want, they don’t need to know the DDC. And
if a patron browses an alley, they will see similar books, but they won’t see,
for instance, all the books written by the same author if these fall under different
domains.
In a virtual system, like BL, the “patron” can be presented with an “alley” containing
all the plates, or all the parts with pins, or all the 2x2 parts….

In short, what I’m trying to say is you can twist a category system in all the
ways you want, you will still need knowledge to use it, it will still be for
the specialists. To allow newbies to use it, you need a librarian, and this
website should be one.

Keep it simple. A tile does not have studs. So if it has studs, then it is a
plate.

That's how I see things, also, but we will have to hold off on this debate
for a bit until Marek and I can get our plates cleared off to focus on catalog
projects again.[…]

Why not put them in both categories?

The database won’t allow it.
A part can only be in one category.
Because they are “categories,” not “tags.”

A tag system was asked for, many times.

I am torn. I feel like having studs is characteristic of the plate and not having

for tiles that have some studs and plates that have some flat space? The most
obvious (to me) name for the category would be Jumpers, but I don't really

You’ll note that on that page, keffiyeh is spelled keffiyah.

You can nest submodels (make a hierarchy of them), copy/paste them as if they

what causes this? From your scenario, it almost sounds like "batch" issues as
some in storage discolored while others did not.

There’s one reason for discolaration: degradation.

(And plastics degrade differently depending on their compositions, as we all
know because we all heard about the pre-2004 fire retardants that are often incriminated.)

But there are several reasons for degradation: UV, humidity, temperature, and
undoubtedly others.

The UV to which LEGO pieces are exposed generally come from the sunlight. And
as they are light, by definition they don’t hit in the shadow. So their effects,
besides being strong on some plastics, are easily noticed.

As for your parts, they may be from different batches. But their difference
in colour might not have been noticeable when they were brand new. They might
also have aged differently because of their composition. Or they may be like
other bricks in composition but still have aged differently because they weren’t
stored like others.

Simpler: https://www.bricklink.com/catalogDownload.asp , and choose “Colors”.

But OP wants parts too. So, on the same page, select “Part and Color Codes”.
That’s the table of (Part+Color) = LEGO’s ElementID (the code shown in the BoM
in official instructions).
That’s not a complete list but it’s pretty long (45000+ elements I believe).
(If there’s a code, then the part obviously exists or existed.)

Or you open the “Color Guide” https://www.bricklink.com/catalogColors.asp and
parse all the pages linked under the column “Parts”.

I believe you can.

Download your Wanted List.

Edit it in a dumb editor (like Notepad, not Word).

Replace all “MINQTY” with “QTY”.

If you want to add a minus sign, first replace “MINQTY»” with “QTY»-” (with a
single chevron / greater than instead of »).

That should work.

And I also have a 32x32 one from the Lego Store I got last year.

Putting them side-by-side, the 16x32 one is darker compared to the 32x32 one.

Interesting... That makes it seem that TLC has been making the tan 16X32s differently
than the 32X32s for every production run.

My other colors of 16X32 BP (green, blue, light gray) match the color of their
32X32 counterparts. Oh well, just another unsolved mystery in TLC's manufacturing
process.

Wasn’t Tan impacted by the Great Colour Shift?

If there were more “old Tan” 16x32 in stock, they would have been used alongside
“new Tan” 32x32.

Under known colours it is listed in black and metallic gold. I have this part,

printed metallic gold. Is this the regular version that shoul be listed under
metallic gold?

I’d say it’s the regular version: Metallic Gold isn’t a plastic colour, it’s
coated on another colour (generally Tan).
On the other hand, I thought the coating always cover all the part’s surface
(but I don’t have many parts in MG, and none hollow/concave like a hat/helmet).

I can see a contemporary Thomas Aquinas type applying that statement to movies,

There are two meanings for the statement. One of them being “I wouldn’t want
that movie to be the topic when playing Jeopardy against that guy”

What’s in a name? That which we call a combo set, by any other name would sell
as sweet!

Sorry, couldn't help it. Had no TV in my apartment when I was young. So it
was come home from work, run the boardwalk, shower, dress, walk to the deli for
takeout and walk across the street to Balboa theater to eat. But the hiccup was
that the theater played Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet for nearly a year straight
before switching movies. To be honest, I didn't mind as a romantic young
idealist. Cried like a baby

I think I still know most lines of that Shakespeare play

That's cool, I like stories about life like that.

Years ago when me and a friend rented a house, for entertainment all we had was
a VCR but no TV so we had hook it into my computer screen to use it. When it
came to movies our choices were limited to a wide variety of one movie, 'What
About Bob' starring Richard Dreyfuss and Bill Murray.

We watched that movie soooo many times that we became really good at memorizing
all the lines and we would play a game where one would say a line or just a word
or two and the other one would guess where in the movie the line or word came
from. We played that game for years after that.

The simplest things in life can create some of the best memories.

Timeo hominem unius movie.

I've found 3 white plate 2X4:

Hi, thanks for your complete answer.

It's just weird even LDraw author pick this way to make "textures", UV Mapping
is not a new thing and it's pretty easy for most of the decorated LEGO parts,
minifigs are a bit more tricky to do.

We are talking about a format created in the 1990’s. Maybe you aren’t old enough
to remember how slow personal computers were at this time. I am
Drawing a simple mesh of a couple hundreds triangles took minutes if not hours.
Drawing what shows on each frame in Studio (bricks, some faces hidden, shadows,
Phong lighting…) would have taken hours. Now Studio does it dozens of times
per second.

“Simple” was misleading. Sorry for that. I didn’t mean it was theoretically
complicated (most 2D/3D graphics algorithms are way older than LDraw), I meant
it was practically infeasible and useless.
Also:
1. vectorial patterns are lighter and often better than bitmaps, especially for
the patterns that appear(ed) on LEGO parts,
2. patterns weren’t quite as important when there were so many basic parts not
yet modelled,
3. and I’m sure there are other sensible reasons

Now, yes, it’s debatable the LDraw Official Library took a bit too long to use
the texmap feature (AFAICT, the feature was added in 2012).

I can't believe anyone modelling 3D object would not use it... and regarding
Studio, as it use Unity, it wouldn't (ans shouldn't) be such a challenge,

I don’t know why Studio doesn’t implement texmaps. LDView and LDCad (among others)
do.
It’s true the official library didn’t use them but it does now (or will, as the
parts are still Unofficial for now).
I’m sure Studio will do too very soon.

except because of those parts from Ldraw.

Well, if it weren’t for LDraw, Studio wouldn’t have so many parts now.
So Studio is what it is now because of LDraw but also thanks to LDraw

(shortly UV Mapping is just given each vertex of a 3D object another set of coordinates:
U,V matching a point in the texture area which is basically a 2D tilled "world",
it is very visual and a standard after the basic plain face colours from the
90s)

  Hi,

short answer is no, if I have understood what you mean by painting (ie: changing
texture of part, like decorated brick or sticker).

Longer answer: soon.

If you mean something else, please be more explicit.

For the record, I have looked a while back if there is any textures actually
used for decorated parts, and found none at all. Looks like textures has been
converted into raw colour data of some kind, but I didn't dig too much into
this.

LDraw (the underlying format for parts in Studio) is an old format. It’s not
a bad thing but it explains why, at the time it was created, mapping images wasn’t
a priority or a simple thing.
So, yes, most patterns are “in the flesh” of the parts: they are coloured surfaces
amongst the parts’ surfaces.
BUT, there’s also a (somewhat recent) feature to use common image files (PNG…)
to be mapped on the parts surfaces. The LDraw official library (that Studio
uses, mostly) has started to add parts that use that feature.
Unfortunately, that feature is not (yet?) supported by Studio.

Note that there’s also “stickers” in LDraw: Parts that are only coloured surfaces
and that can be placed in front of any plane surface to add patterns (like real
stickers but not bendable).
Studio chose not to add them in its palettes but they should be usable as custom
parts.

Too bad we can't just put any pic somewhere in data to create custom decorated
parts.

According to Summer (forum_admin on the dedicated forum for Studio: http://forum.bricklikn.com/
), and if I remember correctly (there are several highly awaited features), this
feature is in QA (testing) and will be released soon.

I know the original LEGO set (Resistance Bomber) was released in 2017, but the
re-release of the set - which included the new Finch Dallow minifig - is from
late 2018.

Or am I wrong?

If minifig dates work the same way than for parts, they are automatically set
from the (oldest) set they are from.
So, unless the new version of the set gets its own entry, the minifig’s date
will stay 2017.

Thank you for the explanations. I agree that some times, or for some people it
can be useful, but i believe that most of the time it isn't. As suggested,
I think that there should be an option to do a general search for wantlists or
in store, choose if you care about variants or not.

The database isn’t made for this, and the only way now is to have “undetermined”
variants, which just adds another variant, fouls the price guide, and makes half
the buyers unhappy.

What would be nice would be “virtual undetermined parts,” and inventories and
sellers should still have to use the determined variants but searches and WLs
wouldn’t.

(There might still be problems though. Say, a buyer parts out a set into a WL,
they are asked if they allow other variants, they accept because they think it
will be cheaper and easier to fullfil, but the set really can only be built with
the one variant )

But that means modifying the database and the site too deeply, at least for now….

the jumpers or tiles with groove, etc) are really useful.

But when you get to things like this, with a 1 x 2 x 6 arch, having something
like 4 variants, doesn't it make it too hard for sellers AND buyers?

Three variants. Don’t exaggerate, you’re showing them

Part No: 3307 Name: Arch 1 x 6 x 2 - Thick Top with Reinforced Underside
*
3307 Arch 1 x 6 x 2 - Thick Top with Reinforced Underside
Parts: Arch

Part No: 15254 Name: Arch 1 x 6 x 2 - Medium Thick Top without Reinforced Underside
*
15254 Arch 1 x 6 x 2 - Medium Thick Top without Reinforced Underside
Parts: Arch

Part No: 12939 Name: Arch 1 x 6 x 2 - Thin Top without Reinforced Underside
*
12939 Arch 1 x 6 x 2 - Thin Top without Reinforced Underside
Parts: Arch

I get the raised arch difference, that is notable, but this thin/thick thing?

The thin / thick thing is described in the notes, and mm dimensions given. Personally,
the difference between the old and new style (with/without the reinforcement)
is enough, but I I can understand why the different variants are there.

Yes, the variants are important:

1. You can fit some parts under the thin and medium thick parts that you can’t
fit under the thick one. E.g.

Part No: 20309 Name: Window 1 x 4 x 1 2/3 with Spoked Rounded Top
*
20309 Window 1 x 4 x 1 2/3 with Spoked Rounded Top
Parts: Window

2. Collectors find it very important to get the right variant.

The odd part here would be the thin one: it was short lived (a year). Too fragile?
Too thin (it leaves a noticeable gap)?
Anyway, it’s here and came before the medium thick and was already in the catalogue
(2013) when the medium thick version was spotted / included in the catalogue
(2016).
There was no reason to merge thin and medium thick then and there’s no much reason
to do it now as we would still need to keep the old one.

Wouldn’t it be as confusing to have a “thick” version and “more or less thin”
one?

Is it not used once Lego puts it on the backing? The sticker is then stuck to
the backing that needs to be peeled off to put it on the Lego element. So if
it has not been put on the original backing it is new. Once it is stuck on the
white backing it is used.

Nope, a new, blank sticker sheet already has the backing. The backing is like
a sprue. LEGO doesn’t put the sticker on the backing, they print on the sticker
while it’s on the backing.

So it’s the printing that makes the new, blank sticker sheet not new anymore.
A new sticker should be pristine white (or transparent), unprinted.

Agreed. A box cannot be new if it has been opened! Now, if you have a sealed
box and you have magically transported the contents out of the box without opening
it, then I would make an exception and it can be listed as 'new'.

Or you if you get them directly from LEGO (or their supplier) before they are

My trays are lettered horizontally by section, and numbered vertically, two columns
of trays per letter section. So A1-A10 are in column one, A11-A20 are in column
two.

And that here is why you should have started numbering from zero: you columns
would have been 00-09, 10-19, etc.
First digit = column, second digit = row.

Of course, the day you add a row, you count from 00 to 0A.
And then you can go up to 36 rows and 36 columns, all with a two “digits” number.

All neat and well ordered. Yessir.

But I'm afraid long time sellers here will not agree MOC gives them some
cash as Studio is not very welcome as far as I understand. Too bad. Gathering
parts for a nice sets available in the gallery could be exhausting and boring.
Having a bag pf ârts ready to buy will be nice. […]

I’d rather say that:
1. Sellers saw how the MOC Shop faired.
2. Sellers understand that MOCs are a niche market. Best-sellers are very rare.
Even MOCs-that-sell are rare.
3. Sellers understand that MOCs require much work (as you yourself noticed) and
they prefer buyers to do it themselves.

As for the prices, look at the constraints on parts for the “AFOL Design Contest.”
Even with a partnership with TLG, the sets will be around 10¢/part. More than
TLG’s sets when you consider there won’t be (new) prints nor recolouring nor
new parts nor expensive licences.

(Curious to see how many of the finalists will reach the crowd funding limit.)

And about Studio:
1. Most sellers don’t see what it could bring them as sellers (see MOC Shop,
see Mosaick).
2. Some (many?) think the efforts put to make Studio would have been better spent
of the main website.

(At least, Studio can compete (and win) with similar programs on many points.
That was not the case with Mosaick )

if there are not multiple shares of coral, (which I am pretty sure is a shade

with Lego's conventions.

Coral is orange, not pink or red.

And “vibrant” means “flashy” as in “Wow, these 1980’s skiing outfits are really
‘vibrant’!”

Well, the definition says New should have been manipulated for sorting only.
Opening isn’t sorting… unless you sort by production date

Now, it’s about screws, not clicking plastic parts, so it’s less “Used” than,
say, removing arms from a torso, but some may see it as “Used” nonetheless.

Haha that's crazy, seems the person making the instructions made the mistake.
I guess Bricklink follows the instructions and not the box, so probably it should
stay like this then... Although unless dad has a job as a hairdresser or fashion
designer I do think he looks a bit off with that kids/teenage haircut

Well, we’re assuming it’s a “dad”. It could be a “big brother” or a “young uncle”
too

And anyone can change the interpretation (and minifigs) to better represent their
own situation.

Set No: 40292 Name: Christmas Gift Box
*
40292-1 (Inv) Christmas Gift Box
293 Parts, 2 Minifigures, 2018
Sets: Holiday & Event: Christmas

LOL, so the Christmas giftset 40292 has a male and a female hairpiece so that
the child can be a boy or a girl (and they're both on the box). But someone
uploaded a picture where the alternate hair is put on the DAD's head, kind
of making it a dad's hairdo optionality feature

https://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemInv.asp?S=40292-1

Actually, it IS a “dad’s hairdo optionality feature”: there are two versions
of the instructions and each one uses different hair for the dad.

I have read your suggestions, took them to heart, and updated the page:

https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=88

I added three new types close to the beginning and added a disclaimer that this
is only an experimental project. The purpose of the framework on that page is
to gauge desirability. If members want to keep this list and BrickLink agrees
to keep it, then it will be improved with better descriptions, better photos,
and better ordering of the entries on the list (possibly by chronological order?).

Chronogical order and something like “discontinued,” or more simply the era /
production years next to the title.
