I see an extra item for p/n 85861 in white, with no corresponding base part entry.

Is this in reality an optional part, or is this an additional part for something
that is in a sub-inventory (e.g. a minifig) ?

Enquiring minds, etc.

It's used in

Minifig No: uni07 Name: Unikitty - Large Smile
*
uni07 (Inv) Unikitty - Large Smile
Minifigures: Unikitty!

Thank you. That reveals another shortcoming in the BL implementation. That being
that, while you may be able to see that on the HTML web page display (assuming
you can click something that expands the sub-inventories), there is no option
to do likewise on the XML download of the set inventory. All I get in the XML
file is a flat rendering of the basic set inventory. It doesn’t reveal that this
part was an extra assigned to the minifig (which we can’t do in the inventory
section of the catalog, because that might imply that every sale of the minifig
comes with the extra).

In one sense it would be nice (I suspect) if extras were matched to the
item they are extra to, just like alternates are (but at the same time not trying
to say they are an alternate because they are not).

Extras _are_ matched to the item they are extra to. They are extra parts to the
set. That is how TLC defines them. They are not extra parts to a minifigure.
A minifigure is an assembly defined by BrickLink, and it should have no bearing
on the set that contains it. Basically, it is just another counterpart like all
other assemblies that are defined in the Counterparts section. Unfortunately,
the BrickLink system treats the minifigure assemblies as special items and all
of that needs to be changed. But the Sun may have gone supernova before that
ever happens.

Cheers,
Randy

Which is fine (as I suggested) but does not propagate to the XML inventory download.

It's in the inventory for this set.

Hope that explains things.

The subject is the counterpart / combo for {30179 + x39c01}.  There’s several
30179cxx, but not with x39c01 in Yellow.

There likely never will be, either, unless TLG decide to do a rerelease of 6434-1
which I highly doubt would ever happen as it's from a bygone era.

The yellow door at the time of it's original release happened to fit the
color scheme of the era the sets were going through, nowadays, it's all color
coordinated and we know a lot more about the parts numbering scheme TLG uses
internally.

If there ever is a need for that particular yellow door in a set design, perhaps
they would reuse it, although given their color palette now, I'd expect it
would turn up in some shade of yellow.

Cheers ...

I guess this open up (again) the eternal question … Is it better (or more correct)
to list the two individually and linked together as a superlot, or to create
a unique catalog entry for the combo. It is existential in one sense. I’m curious
if there are ground floor reasons that suggest one over the other (and this same
subject somewhat also applies to wheels and tyres).

Ouch! Yes, at some point the BL office dumped all our line-drawn images for part
renders. They decided to trade people complaining that our images were too small
for people complaining about the color of our images. What can we do?

We are still free to correct and upload images. The community still can improve
our catalog.

The old grays are a problem for sure. Those of us who spend time recoloring renders
(of which randyf is our fearless leader) tend to focus on getting new parts and
colors done and less on the vintage stuff.

I've tried a couple of times to set myself to this task but there are so
many gray images and (seriously, I am not making this up...) I dislike the old
grays.

Take care,

P.S. One suggestion I would give you is to sort your lists by _color_ instead
of by part name. That way, all dark gray parts get lumped together and all light
gray parts get lumped together. It helps tremendously with the inventorying process.

I wish that was the way it worked, but we both know that it is not.

And why is that, pray tell? I am in the position to handle these things, so I
believe I know what I am talking about.

Because I wish that superior images replaced inferior images, and never the reverse.

  These are
the images in the colors that djklitz mentioned that used to be the catalog

They were replaced because _all_ of the old 80 x 60 pixel thumbnail images were
replaced with larger images. At that time, the LEGO renders were chosen as the
default. Not my decision or that of any of the other volunteer admins.

I believe that replacing all the old images was a bad decision. I'm not
saying you specifically did it. I honestly don't know what individual or
group was responsible, but I do know that it has led to the trouble that this
thread's initiator experienced.

  However,
users _are_ free to adjust the colors of the renders and upload them if they
think they are better. I have personally done this on over 9000 images in the
catalog.

https://www.bricklink.com/catalogListOld.asp?pg=1&imgID=169230&v=2

How many have you done?

Randy

What a pompous question. You know exactly how to look up all of the catalog
images that I have contributed. I appreciate your many contributions to the
catalog, but I don't think that their vast number is a valid excuse to be
condescending to anyone.

Attached is two examples.
One of set 5958 - Mummy's Tomb when sorting by Item Name. The dark gray slope
looks very light gray.
Also in 5988, two of the light gray parts could easily be mistaken as dark gray.

However, there are many cases of other parts specifically with dark vs light
gray.

It would be awesome to adjust these as I am sure I am not the only one who's
made this mistake. Could we fix these default images to be more representative
of their actual color?

Thanks!

Oh awesome thank you I did not realize there was a self-submittal process or
I would have started there. I was directed to come here from bricklink support.

And yes - sorting by color helps avoid this mistake. Unfortunately my parts are
sorted by type so when I am doing plates - I get all the plates of all the colors
I need etc. Then I have everything organized alphabetically as bricklink displays
them so I can, usually, get things done more quickly.

  Hello everyone,

As of today, we have promoted BrickLink member Turez (Jonas) from Catalog Associate
to Catalog Administrator. In practical terms, this means he will now have full
privileges on both sides of the catalog, governing both the entries themselves
and the inventory system which connects them:

https://www.bricklink.com/v3/member/community_experts.page

Jonas has done excellent work during this past year in his catalog-side-only
position, quickly masterning all the various functions in what has often been
called a "minefield" environment.

Of particular interest to him is the process of getting all the set entries added
to the database at the correct time (and with the correct details of course),
which involves staging them as pending items and doing research as to when each
set will be released:

https://www.bricklink.com/catalogListOld.asp?itemPend=Y&catType=S

The scheduled release date is usually added to the item name on a pending entry.
As you can see, we are on the verge of a huge upload of new sets. June 1 is typcially
the single busiest release date besides January 1.

We are very pleased to have such great talent on our team. So join me in welcoming
Jonas to this new position!

Congrats!!

Exactly.

IIRC that option to click the image to get the number to click on didnt used
to be there so it's better than nothing at all

Hello,

Thanks for contributing! Catalog submissions are approved by our admin and they
only have so much time to go around. It is normal to wait several weeks at least
for stickered counterparts to be added. (Priority is given to new parts and sets,
understandably.) A quick search of the word 'sticker' in the log of pending
items returned about 400 results. So, I would be a bit patient here if I were
you.

I looked over your submissions and they look pretty good! There are a couple
things I would recommend just from my experience as a submitter:

1. Some of these parts are missing the word Pattern.
2. When possible, try to describe the colors accurately using LEGO colors as
your guide. For instance, you use the word Green several times. Is it Green,
Bright Green, or Lime? The admin are going to need to confirm.
3. The sticker on 87544pb100 is quite crooked. If it were me, I would carefully
remove, dust off, and reposition this one.

Good luck!
~Jen

Lol reading this I'm so surprised that my submissions took only 2 days (I
must have lucked out).

The subject is the counterpart / combo for {30179 + x39c01}.  There’s several

It's in the set's inventory:

193 Parts, 5 Minifigures, 1999

Many thanks - could you please send the original image files to catalog@bricklink.com?
The upload through the forum makes them smaller than necessary, so it would be
nice to have larger images for the catalog entries.
It will likely take a while until we have time to proceed with this little project
(probably not before we are done with all the new summer sets and parts), but
in any case it is very helpful to have the images ready.

They are now pending for 2 weeks, so I can't add them to the set inventory.
As these are my first entries, I was wondering if I missed a step for the approval
to go forward. Or there is simply nobody around with the same set for the approval?

Thanks

Hi,
Parts in the catalog needs to be added by people who have them. These people
can take pictures and add them with the form "Add or change", add dimensions...
and finally add pictures.
But don't forget it could take time for the parts to be approved

Hi. I just received a whole bunch of older 1970s sets and was sorting thru the
parts and for set 410-1 there was a 3003px3 instead of 3003pb008. Thought it
would be interesting to have an alternate for set 410-1.

Thank you

i just got the obi-wan one in a lot and can provide more photos if needed

oh and for the dimensions should i remove the lightsaber or keep it on

I would say don't remove the lightsaber (i.e. the 4L bar), as the figure
came assembled with it when it was new and it could get lost more easily when
stored or shipped separately.

sounds good. ill work on it shortly

With the recent addition of Commander Fox sw0202b, it has got many people in
the community questioning wether or not variant minifigs such as this should
be given an sw number on here?
Have the rules changed or been relaxed? Where will it end?
For the completionists it just makes collecting more challenging (& expensive)
& the worry will be it’ll put people off or they’ll give up altogether, as the
barrier to collect minifigs is already high with over 1300+ in the catalog.
For those wondering, I did own Fox, but sold it as it never had an sw number
& now I’m faced with a decision, do I fork out hundreds of pounds to get it (if
I can find one), or just sit with the knowledge of my collection never being
complete & quitting altogether?

The catalog is a fluid entity, and it ebbs and flows in many ways all of the
time. Some things get added (sw0202b), some get deleted, and some just get changed
(like five Star Wars "figures" that were just decommissioned [ https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=2571
]).

It was decided by the current catalog administration team as a whole that sw0202b
should get its own entry because it was made and distributed in sets in significant
quantities.

The Star Wars figure mentioned is no different than this Technic figure

Minifig No: tech041a Name: Technic Figure White Legs, White Torso with Red Harness, Blue Arms, Red Helmet, Trans-Clear Visor
*
tech041a (Inv) Technic Figure White Legs, White Torso with Red Harness, Blue Arms, Red Helmet, Trans-Clear Visor
Minifigures: Technic
that was printed incorrectly and distributed in sets in significant quantities.
That was just added to the catalog in December of last year.

As catalog administrators, we cannot play favorites and we try to apply guidelines
and decisions as consistently as possible.

Cheers,
Randy

Ok—I’ll say hi here

I am putting together info on sw0102–again as the admins have asked of me since
it was years ago when the full triangle of this minifigure helmet was misprinted
into many sets but never got it’s separate variant entry. It was I and a couple
others that tried to get this accomplished but without success. At present Sw0202
torso misprint was accepted really quick by the admins. Why? Just split the
sw0102 to add the variant correctly as sw0102a and sw0102b.

None of the current administrators were around for the old discussions or yet
understand the issue fully for sw0102. That is why we need the information.

We received all of the necessary information promptly when dealing with sw0202b,
and we were able to make a decision based on our collective prior experience
as an admin team dealing with similar scenarios (such as the Technic figure).
Once we feel like we have enough information, a decision will be made and acted
upon.

Cheers,
Randy

Any chance you could tell us what this "necessary information" that you
received on sw0202b was? I'd just be interested in knowing the backstory
on this figure.

Also what is the criteria that the decision is made on? What determines whether
you will add it to the catalog or not?

Thanks,
Pete

Just curious if any catalog admin is willing to answer this.

-Pete

3 years later, I have only seen paper bags once.

But the sets that I am opening and posting proof of change requests haven't
changed over to paper and won't for a long time.

We’ll send you one at our expense in order to get it done. You keep the watch.

Sure,

Lego keeps track of parts being used in specific colors with Element IDs (Part
Color Codes). And sometimes update them with new numbers to float currently in-use
parts to the top of their filing system. Kinda like renaming an old Word document
to remind yourself that you're still working on it.

There used to be a naming convention for ID #s, but now (I think, 41XXXXX onwards)
they just go up in numerical order.

So,
Color - Element ID - Chronological Order (1,2,3...)

Further to this forum thread, I just checked Peeron and it does not list it as

My thoughts are that someone has incorrectly identified a color for this part,

It definitely comes in VLBG, since Thok (bio002) uses that.

Seems like it must be an error. Light Bluish Gray is not even listed as a known
color for this part.

True, not used in any sets. However... oddly there is a LEGO render of it on
the Color Images page?

(Right minifigure is the unreleased one)

The helmet is different too.

You may be correct. I know the visor was original to the set he bought.

Normally I wouldn’t care, but this one just rubbed me the wrong way for some
reason.

Thanks,
Matt

Are there variations on part 2447? Minifigure visor. I have a customer complaining
that I sent an old version with a set he bought, not the new version. As far
as I know there is only one version.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Here’s the pic he sent.

I wondered if you spotted that, sadly I couldn’t edit.

You mean like writing “gauges” (gages) instead of “gouges”?

Fortunately, I mostly write in English here, so I’ve the excuse of being a foreigner

We never really get to see pure black and white. Interesting colors.

Or non-colour / all-colour

But then it also may be a cultural thing / translation problem.  Colour names
are tricky and translations are never exact.

Yes, full of false friends.  It’s rare but I’ve heard English-speaking people
say blanc (white) instead of noir for black

There’s plenty here that make a fool of themselves in their native language.
