Wat is een onbepaald type?
De woorden "Onbepaald type" in de naam van een catalogusinvoer geven aan dat artikelen in inventarissen of te koop niet varianten-specifiek zijn.

Wat zijn varianten?
Varianten zijn verschillen in wat in wezen hetzelfde artikel is. Voor onderdelen kunnen deze verschillen zitten in de mal, de kleur of de bedrukking. Onderdelenvarianten kunnen vrij gering zijn of belangrijke functionele verschillen omvatten. Er zijn ook variaties in de inhoud van sets, de verpakking van sets en de instructies van sets, evenals in boeken, catalogi, figuren en accessoires. In feite kan alles in de BrickLink-catalogus varianten hebben.

Hoe gaat BrickLink om met varianten?
Wanneer een andere versie van een item in de catalogus wordt ontdekt, wordt de bestaande catalogusinvoer voor dat onderdeel soms opgesplitst in twee of meer ingangen. Als er items te koop zijn of reeds verkocht zijn onder de oorspronkelijke catalogusinvoer, dan wordt de oorspronkelijke invoer niet direct uit de catalogus verwijderd. In plaats daarvan wordt de invoer gemarkeerd voor verwijdering nadat nieuwe catalogusinvoeren zijn gemaakt om rekening te houden met de verschillen.

Zijn er lijsten met varianten?
Ja. Sommige daarvan staan hieronder. De rest is te vinden door naar de Relaties tussen items pagina te gaan en op de links te klikken.

Waarom heeft BrickLink geen catalogusinvoeren voor alle varianten?
Het splitsen van varianten, vooral onderdelenvarianten, vergt veel werk voor verkopers, kopers, beheerders en bijdragers. Daarom vinden varianten-splitsingen niet vaak plaats.

Waarom gaat BrickLink inconsistent om met varianten?
De manier waarop BrickLink varianten behandelt, is het resultaat van vele jaren van uiteenlopende meningen over hoe met varianten omgegaan moet worden. Veel hiervan gebeurde zonder geschreven richtlijnen voor het omgaan met varianten. Bovendien begon de site pas eind 2018 formeel gegevens te verzamelen over alle varianten, wat betekent dat de volledige omvang van varianten waarschijnlijk niet volledig werd begrepen vóór die tijd.

Zijn er varianten die niet op deze pagina staan?
Ja. Veel varianten zijn nog niet ontdekt. En naast de items op de onderstaande lijsten, zijn er andere bekende problemen waarover nog geen catalogusbrede actie is ondernomen:

  1. Wanneer er alternatieve onderdelen in een set zitten waarop stickers moeten worden aangebracht, wordt het onderdeel met sticker soms als variant onderscheiden en soms niet. Technisch gezien zou er een aparte invoer moeten zijn voor elk gestickerd onderdeel dat een onderscheiden variant heeft in de inventaris van een set. Hetzelfde geldt voor varianten in assemblages.

  2. Vergelijkbare of identieke patronen die zowel bedrukte als gegoten versies hebben, worden momenteel niet onderscheiden door de catalogus. Hoewel ze functioneel niet verschillend zijn, zijn dit technisch gezien verschillende onderdelen door productieverschillen en kunnen ze verschillende Element ID's hebben.

  3. Talrijke onderdelen hebben malkenmerken die verschillen in de aanwezigheid of afwezigheid van onderdeelnummers en het woord "LEGO" dat in het onderdeel is gegoten, evenals sommige onderdelen die verschillende versies hebben van het LEGO-logo op de nopjes. Deze verschillen worden over het algemeen niet onderscheiden of genoteerd in de catalogus.

  4. Minipophoofden hebben meerdere ononderscheiden variaties die aanzienlijke wijzigingen in de gehele categorie zouden vereisen als ze worden aangepakt.

  5. Veel Educatieve en Dacta-sets verschilden qua uiterlijk en inhoud, soms aanzienlijk, gedurende hun productiejaren. Een paar van deze sets zijn opgesplitst in meerdere catalogusinvoeren, maar de meeste niet. Het splitsen van alle sets die gesplitst zouden kunnen worden, zou een enorme taak zijn vanwege de relatieve zeldzaamheid van sets en slechte conservering, wat betekent dat er weinig gesealde sets zijn, voor deze lijn.

  6. Door structurele tekortkomingen in de site-architectuur worden figuuronderdelen met malvariaties op verwarrende en suboptimale manieren behandeld. Theoretisch zou elke figuur die is geproduceerd van eind 2010 tot begin 2013 bijvoorbeeld een hoofd kunnen hebben met een holle nop of een open nop.

  7. Een aanzienlijk aantal sets werd anders verpakt met dezelfde inhoud of vergelijkbare (maar verschillende) inhoud. BrickLink erkent sommige van deze verschillen met aparte catalogusinvoeren en itemrelaties, maar erkent er veel anderen niet. Bovendien hadden honderden of duizenden sets verschillen in originele dozen en bouwinstructies die ofwel niet herkend zijn of slechts worden herkend met aanvullende opmerkingen.
