Create a Coupon

Information for sellers

Sellers can now offer coupons to buyers more quickly and easily using the new Create a Coupon and Store Coupon pages.

Sellers will no longer need to create custom HTML emails for their coupons. Instead, they can now add a custom note to the buyer using the Note to Customer field on the Create a Coupon page.

After creating the coupon, the buyer will automatically receive an email with the seller’s note and coupon information, which they can use for new orders on the seller’s store.

Coupons can’t be edited

Make sure to double-check the information for each coupon as you create it. Once the coupon is created, it can’t be edited as an email is automatically sent to the buyer. You can delete coupons after they have been created, but this can be frustrating to buyers and should be used only as a last resort.

Coupon Preset Settings page

To speed up coupon creation, sellers can use the Coupon Preset Settings page to create default coupon settings that can be used to prefill the Create a Coupon form.

The Preset page is also helpful for sending out the same coupon to different buyers. While coupons must be sent one at a time, having your presets ready makes it quick and easy to send personalized offers. For example, you could send out a coupon to all users who purchased from your store at the end of each day.

Seller fees

Coupons don’t reduce the order value used to calculate seller fees. Fees are based on the total order value, before any coupons are applied.

Coupon types

There are four types of coupon sellers can create, each with optional restrictions.

Example: 15% off an order.

Optional coupon restrictions

  • Minimum spend limit: the minimum amount a buyer must spend to use the coupon.
  • Maximum discount limit: the maximum purchase amount eligible for the coupon.

Example: If the maximum discount limit is $200 and the buyer’s total amount (before S&H and taxes) is $300, the discount will apply only to $200 of the order.

  • Excludes sale items: items that are on sale will not be discounted further. The coupon will apply only to items in the cart that are not on sale.

Coupon status

A coupon’s status shows where it is in its lifetime. Here’s what each status means:

Status Description
Open The coupon has not been redeemed by the buyer. This is the default status when a coupon is created.
Redeemed The coupon has been redeemed by the buyer. Redeemed coupons are displayed for six months after the date they were used.
Expired The coupon has expired. All expired coupons are displayed for one month after the expiration date.

Coupon restrictions

  • Coupons can only be created for BrickLink accounts that have been merged with a LEGO.com account.
  • You can’t create a coupon for yourself.
  • Coupons can only be created for registered members.
  • The recipient must have a confirmed email address.
  • Coupons can’t be created for members you’ve stoplisted or who have stoplisted you.
  • An expiration date is required and must be within one year from the date the coupon is created.
Information for buyers

Once a seller creates a coupon for a buyer, that buyer will receive an automated email containing the coupon details. Buyers can also view received coupons on their My Coupon page.

Only one coupon can be used per order, and coupons only apply to new orders (they can’t be applied to an existing order). Discounts will apply to all batches within an order.

At the payment portion of checkout, buyers can see if there are any coupons available for that store and will be given the option to redeem the coupon before placing their order. If more than two coupons are available, the buyer can select which coupon they want to use or save the coupon(s) for future order(s).

Coupons are stored in a separate field from the seller-entered credit field, allowing sellers to enter discounts in addition to the coupon. Coupons are added to the seller-entered credit and displayed as credit applied to the order on orders placed, downloads, invoices, and all emails and web pages that include the credit field. If a coupon is applied to an order, its credit amount appears in its own column on the right side of the credit entry box on the seller’s Orders Received page.
